Schitt’s Creek was a certified cultural phenomenon, earning critical raves, nine Emmy Awards during its final season and massive ratings for Netflix when it migrated to the streamer from its original home at Pop TV. The series also delivered a curious situation for co-creator, show runner and star Dan Levy when he brought a follow-up project to Netflix in the form of a dramatic feature film debut called Good Grief.
“This movie came to be when I was experiencing some loss and some grief in my own life and was asking a lot of questions and didn’t know what to make of those feelings,” Levy explained Tuesday at the premiere of the film at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre. (Though he didn’t mention it on stage, Levy lost his grandmother during the pandemic.) “When you’re a writer, sometimes all you can do is put pen to paper and hope that something happens,...

Dan Levy, helped along by friends, confronts personal loss and grief he’d been trying to evade in the trailer for Netflix’s Good Grief, which the Schitt’s Creek co-creator wrote, directs and stars in.
Levy plays Marc Dreyfus, whose contented life in London after the loss of his mother with his larger-than-life husband, Oliver, played by Luke Evans, ends when Oliver unexpectedly dies. As Marc’s world shatters, he and his two best friends, played by Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel, go on a weekend of self-discovery in Paris to reveal hard truths they each needed to face.
“My husband officially died a year ago today. For such a meticulous person, he left behind one hell of a mess,” an anguished Marc announces at one point in the trailer.

It is also Levy’s first project under his Not A Real Production Company and Netflix.

“Schitt’s Creek” co-creator Dan Levy is making his feature film directing debut with “Good Grief,” a bittersweet comedy set at Netflix.
The movie will star Levy, Ruth Negga (“Passing”), Himesh Patel (“Station Eleven”), Luke Evans (“Beauty and the Beast”), Celia Imrie (“Better Things”), Arnaud Valois (“Spring Blossom”), David Bradley (“Game of Thrones”) and Jamael Westman (West End’s “Hamilton”).
In addition to directing and starring in the film, Levy also wrote the screenplay. “Good Grief” centers on Marc Dreyfus, who chose to distract himself from the loss of his mom with a comfortable marriage. “Schitt’s Creek” may be over, but the partnership between Dan Levy and Netflix is just getting started. Levy is set to make his directorial debut on “Good Grief,” a new original film produced by the streaming giant and Levy’s Not a Real Production Company. The movie, which Levy also wrote, tells the story of a gay man working through his grief over the death of his mother. While this will be Levy’s first feature film behind the camera, he’s certainly no stranger to the art form, as he won Emmys for both his writing and directing on “Schitt’s Creek.”
Per the official synopsis, Marc Dreyfus chose to distract himself from the loss of his mom with a comfortable marriage. But when his husband also dies, unexpectedly, Marc is forced to finally confront the grief he’s tried so hard to avoid, sending him and his two closest...

“Schitt’s Creek” star Dan Levy has launched a new production company — Not A Real Production Company — with longtime publicist Megan Zehmer, who has been tapped as president of film and television.
The venture comes amid Levy’s overall TV and film deal with Netflix, which was announced back in September and is set to begin this month as his deal with ABC Signature ends. The Emmy winner will be producing and writing scripted content and other creative projects for the streamer.
In her role, Zehmer — who previously served as vice president of 42West — will oversee all development of the company’s slate. Zehmer’s transition into the role follows her and Levy’s existing professional relationship from “Schitt’s Creek.”
“Megan navigated the PR roll-out for the Schitt’s Creek Emmy campaign with such an impressive level of skill, taste, and ingenuity,” Levy said in a statement. “Her work speaks for itself at this point,...

One year after “Schitt’s Creek” had its historic sweep at the Emmys — becoming the first comedy to win every major award — its co-creator Dan Levy has signed a new deal with Netflix.
In the deal, which is said to be eight figures under competitive circumstances, Levy will work on both movies and television. He’ll start work immediately on the film side, on an untitled romantic comedy that he’ll star in, write, produce and direct. Sister’s Stacey Snider and Kate Fenske will also produce with Levy. No further details about the project were announced.
Levy and Netflix was a marriage waiting to happen: It was the streamer that propelled “Schitt’s Creek” — which premiered on Pop TV in 2015 — into the stratosphere. In a Variety cover story about the show in April 2020, Eugene Levy, “Schitt’s Creek” co-creator and Dan Levy’s father, told Variety that when the comedy began streaming...

Sister is teaming with New York Times bestselling author and journalist Taffy Brodesser-Akner to develop and produce the feature film The Get, based on Matt Shaer’s GQ article “The Orthodox Hit Squad.” Brodesser-Akner will write the feature.

To uncover the causes and consequences of this burst of violence, the novel explores the Cause Houses housing projects, inspired by the Red Hook housing projects that produced McBride.
