The best thing about the Permanent Roommates saga has been its relatable characters. The series, whose previous two seasons were critically acclaimed, is now back with a third season. The first season had been released at a time when the web-series format was relatively new and The Viral Fever, aka Tvf, had cashed in on the vacant space on YouTube. At the time, the characters of Mikesh, aka Mikki, and Tanya, aka Tanu, had captured the zeitgeist of urban India in a very endearing way. Season 2 was not that well received, but the makers have now decided to add to the story by bringing in the third season.
It’s hard to see the series with a fresh lens. The characters evoke a strange sense of nostalgia. Mikesh and Tanya had become the quintessential live-in couple. There have been other shows as well that have tried to recreate the dramedy...

„Panchayat”, the Indian comedy-drama series streaming on Amazon Prime directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra, is surprisingly witty and amusing. You don’t need a lot of free time to watch it, as it conists of eight brief 30-min episodes. They form a linear story altogether, but each of them is a standalone anecdote, so you can take small doses.

The title, referring to a specific Indian form of local government, rightly suggests a rural backdrop. Abishek Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar), a city boy, and a fresh university graduate, tired of staying idle at home (and also lacking better job offers), accepts a safe, but also miserably paid government clerical position in Uttar Pradesh Phulera village. However, his aspirations reach far beyond being a secretary at the panchayat office. He dreams of an Mba career (read: prestige and money), but before that, he has to prepare for a demanding exam for candidates.

OTTWhen he finds no other jobs, Abhishek takes up a government job as the secretary of a village panchayat in Uttar Pradesh.Saraswati DatarPanchayat’s one-line premise; a lone urban man in an unfamiliar rural surrounding is pretty much the gist of English August by Upamanyu Chatterjee that had its uninterested public servant Agastya Sen struggle in his post as a civil servant in rural India. But perhaps since Panchayat, now streaming on Amazon Prime, is created by The Viral Fever (Tvf), it tells a similar story, but replaces substance abuse and masturbation with humour and pathos in equal doses. When he finds no other jobs and just sitting at home is too shameful, Abhishek Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar) takes up a government job as the secretary or Sachiv as the villagers call him, of the Phullera village panchayat in Uttar Pradesh. The salary is meagre, and the vagaries of village life are overwhelming.
