San Francisco, CA – Today, Viz Media as part of its Viz Originals line launches a one-shot submissions portal which will see American aspiring creators published alongside Japanese legends including Rumiko Takahashi, Junji Ito and Haro Aso via the Viz Manga digital service. The new platform will produce bite-size original manga stories covering a variety of interests from horror to comedy and from action to romance, all locally created by debut and seasoned writers.
The Japanese one-shot model for serialization boasts the most influential and successful track record on the planet for launching debut manga creators. It is a model in which a one-shot (a complete story running between 15 – 60 pages) is published for an already built-in audience who then determine whether it should go on to be serialized as a manga series.
Leading the acquisitions for the next big manga is former Weekly Shonen Jump Editor-in-Chief Hisashi Sasaki who oversaw Japan...

The holidays are here! With the collectibles market on fire lately, it’s been a tough time for people to get their hands on some of the coolest comics, games, cards, and action figures out there. But there’s no better time to go big than the holidays: now is a great time to grab those giant action figures, throwback video games, massive collected editions, and classic cards. And of course, we’re happy to help you find the perfect Marvel gift for the nerds in your life, whether they’re lifelong fans or just getting into your favorite heroes.
For The Marvel Zombies: What The–?! #10
What The–?! was a parody book published in the late 1980s and early 1990s by Marvel to make fun of their staff, their stories, and their readers. And, for one half of one issue, they actually pulled off a touching Christmas story.

This comic obviously doesn’t really exist. There is no Amazing Fantasy #1000, it exists only in the heads of the Marvel marketing department. Spider-Man’s 60th anniversary, however, does exist, and he’s one of a handful of characters that forced his way into mainstream pop culture many years before Marvel became the pop culture juggernaut it now is. Peter Parker is, of course, all of us when we were teenage kids. Socially awkward, tough home life, constantly short of money…take your pick, there’s something in there that everyone could relate to. The fact he gained his powers also made every kid reading think, hey, if it happened to him, it could happen to me.
Peter Parker has also had a massive influence on a lot of professionals now working in the industry, as this anniversary issue shows.

Fandom is multifaceted, and each of these 10 novels has a unique take on how pop culture shapes our lives. There’s a ’90s classic about digital D&d alongside a contemporary account of game designers from the Oregon Trail generation. Historical fiction set during comics’ Golden and Bronze Ages gives way to a cautionary tale about superheroes’ collateral damage. And while cons can be the setting for geeky romance meet-cutes, they can also be the site of Misery-inspired thrillers.

If you want to know what the future of the MCU looks like, just look at what Marvel Comics is publishing right now. As a general rule, whatever is being prioritized in Marvel’s publishing wing is usually a good indicator of which way the wind is blowing for their Marvel Studios counterparts over the next few years. Sometimes this takes the form of which storylines are suddenly being reprinted in prestigious collected editions, while others it’s about the launch of new series which position old characters, titles, and trademarks in prominent ways. Whether it’s Sam Wilson becoming Captain America or Jane Foster becoming Thor, the Marvel Comics events of today are often the MCU milestones of tomorrow.
And Marvel isn’t messing around with big event stories right now, announcing a whopping eight titles that all should feel very familiar to fans who enjoy speculation about the next evolution of the MCU.

“Crazy Rich Asians” screenwriter Adele Lim and Japanese director Hikari have come abroad the romantic dramedy “Lost for Words” for Working Title.
“Lost for Words” is based on an original idea from Oscar-winning screenwriter Richard Curtis, who wrote the previous draft and will be staying on the project as a producer. The project centers on a world-famous actor who becomes romantically entangled with his translator, and the translator’s boss who is also an actress.
Lim teamed with Peter Chiarelli on the script for 2018’s “Crazy Rich Asians,” which grossed $338 million worldwide. She exited the planned sequels due to a dispute over pay disparity. Lim co-wrote the script with Qui Nguyen for Disney Animation’s “Raya and the Last Dragon,” slated for a March, 2021 release. The film features the voices of Kelly Marie Tran as the titular Raya and Awkwafina as Sisu, the last dragon.

Marissa Meyer finishes what she began with Renegades in Supernova, an epic & emotional conclusion to Nova and Adrian's superpowered story.
This article is sponsored by Macmillan Books. All views expressed in the article reflect those of the writer.
It's no secret that it's a great time to be a fan of superhero storytelling. The biggest, most expensive movies in the world are about superheroes, and we're getting to a point in comic book adaptation culture that even some of the medium's more obscure characters are making their way onto TV screens.
But we don't talk enough about how the trend has spilled over into fiction. From Sarah Kuhn's Heroine Complex series to V.E. Schwab's Villains series to Lauren Shippen's recent The Infinite Noise, there are increasing examples of character-driven superpowered stories in the literary world and, like all media, there are ways in which this...

This Wayward Son discussion includes major spoilers for both Carry On and Wayward Son.
Wayward Son, the sequel to Rainbow Rowell's queer wizard romance Carry On, hit shelves earlier this month. The book picks up roughly a year following the ending of Carry On, which saw Chosen One Simon Snow defeat the Insidious Humdrum and The Mage alongside best friend Penelope and vampire boyfriend Baz. It asks the worthy question: What happens after The Chosen One fulfills his prophecy?
Answer: Simon Snow is depressed, having not developed the coping skills to thrive in a post-Watford, post-Prophecy world. This prompts Penny into strong-arming Simon and Baz into a cross-country road trip adventure across America. What begins as Cheesecake Factory visits and Ren Faire detours escalates into another fight for Simon and his friends,...

So, you might think comic books and graphic novels are all about superheroes and have such a vast background and back-catalogue that it’s almost impossible to jump in and read them. I thought this at one point, many moons ago, unsure of how I’d be able to delve into the world of comics without being completely confused and overwhelmed with these long-existing worlds that had been established and built over decades. Believe me when I say… there’s much more to comics, and I wanted to highlight a number of graphic novels and comic books for those who might be considering getting into the scene but aren’t sure where to begin. Basically… some recommendations for new readers and those who want to check out some stuff without feeling lost, bewildered and agitated by it all.

I am very familiar with Rainbow Rowell. My wife is a fan of her young adult novels, and I’ve read a couple of them also. She’s a superb writer with a knack for writing likeable and sparky characters with whimsical and humorously loveable personalities. When I saw that she was writing a graphic novel, I was very much into it, and moreso when I discovered what the premise would be (we’ll get to that). Faith Erin Hicks, a Canadian Eisner-Winning illustrator, is the artist behind Pumpkinheads, and she herself has worked on numerous wonderful comics, including The Nameless City trilogy and various Avatar: The Last Airbender comics. Her artwork compliments Rainbow Rowell’s writing perfectly, it’s like the two mediums from these two distinct voices were meant to be together in...

Our book section contributors list up the books we're most looking forward to this fall season — from the spooky to the cozy.
There's never a bad season of the year for reading. Whether it's winter, summer, spring, or fall, there's a reading habit that goes oh-so-well with the season. But there's something about fall—when the leaves are changing (at least in some parts of the world) and the nights are getting longer—that makes me want to curl up with the coziest of books or the most deliciously creepy short story we can find.

Cozy and empowering, Pumpkinheads is a must-read fall graphic novel for anyone who wants to visit the best pumpkin patch ever.
Author Rainbow Rowell and Eisner Award–winning artist Faith Erin Hicks have teamed up for Pumpkinheads, a new graphic novel about two high schoolers embarking on a final night of adventure in the pumpkin patch they have called work-home for the past four autumns.
Deja and Josie are seniors, which means this particular Halloween marks the last time they will have the chance to explore DeKnock’s World Famous Pumpkin Patch and Autumn Jamboree (aka the greatest pumpkin patch in the world) together before everything changes. What starts as an epic quest to find "Fudge Girl," the co-worker Josiah has been crushing on for the past four seasons but has never had the courage to start a conversation with, turns into a night to celebrate the two friends' relationship,...

My first year at San Diego Comic-Con is in the can, and I have a few tips from my experience to pass on to anyone who may need it. My husband, Billy, and the other GeekTyrant originals, Joey and Free, have been going to Comic-Con for over a decade, so when I finally decided I could leave my kids and come to the convention and help carry the writing and editing load, Billy was gracious enough to try to prepare me. But this is where my first tip comes into play:
There is no preparing someone when it comes to San Diego Comic-Con:
I have attended the Phoenix Fan convention a few times, I have even attended Wonder-Con in Anaheim. There is nothing like this convention. It is larger in scope that I can describe. With well over 100,000 people in attendance, and a room (Hall H) that holds 7,000, it’s...

Once again we try and predict this year's Eisner Awards winners. Once again, we're probably entirely wrong.
Happy Comic-Con Eve, all! I had a whole "'Twas the night before Comic Con" bit lined up, but Apparently it's considered a faux pas to reveal the location of the annual Sdcc post-Eisners key party on the internet, so you'll have to just hang out here for a while as we pick over the list of nominees for comics' most prestigious awards and tell you why the books we liked most will win! And then come back after the ceremony to tell us why we were completely wrong.

Good news for people who love good news! Beloved (by me) young adult novel Eleanor & Park is going to be adapted for the big screen. Picturestart has acquired the rights and will be producing alongside Plan B pictures. And just in case you thought the news couldn’t get any better, the book’s author, Rainbow Rowell, is writing the script and will be executive producing as well. Which, not every novelist is great at writing screenplays, but Rowell also writes the current run of Marvel’s Runaways, which is so so good, and which also means she has some practice writing scripts and collaborating with artists who fill everything out visually, so I have high high hopes for this one.
This is Deadline’s description of the book:
The novel is the bittersweet story of two misfit teenagers living in Nebraska in 1986. It poignantly captures the awkward, sometimes painful,...

Exclusive: Picturestart has acquired film rights to Rainbow Rowell’s bestselling novel Eleanor & Park. Plan B will produce with Picturestart’s Erik Feig, whose upstart production company has committed to finance the film. The author is writing the script and will be exec producer.
The novel is the bittersweet story of two misfit teenagers living in Nebraska in 1986. It poignantly captures the awkward, sometimes painful, minefield of the high school experience — and the wonder of first love. Protagonists Eleanor and Park connect on the school bus, through comic books and mix tapes, and fall headfirst for each other, even though they know it will bring them trouble. The book won multiple awards, including a Printz Honor and the Goodreads Choice Award, and was named one of year’s best by the New York Times, Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus Reviews among others. Eleanor & Park has sold more than 1 million copies to date,...

The world will never stop asking Daniel Radcliffe about Harry Potter. Luckily, he has some great answers.
However you may feel about the Fantastic Beasts prequels (personally: bad) and The Cursed Child stage sequel (personally: good), there's no arguing that the world of Harry Potter has an infinite amount of storytelling potential. One need look no further than the wonderful stories that have been told by fans within the wizarding world universe, not to mention published works of fiction influenced by Harry Potter, such as Rainbow Rowell's delightful young adult novel Carry On.

The GLAAD Media Awards nominations have recognized “Blockers,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Deadpool 2,” “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” and “Love, Simon” as the outstanding film in the wide release category.
GLAAD announced their 30th annual nominations at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday. The Media Awards recognize and honor media for “their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community and the issues that affect their lives.”
Not reflected was Oscars Best Picture nominee “Bohemian Rhapsody.” TheWrap reported on Thursday that GLAAD made the decision to remove “Bohemian Rhapsody” and the story of the queer icon Freddie Mercury from awards contention in the wake of new sexual misconduct accusations against the film’s former director, Bryan Singer.

Marvel made an interesting announcement on Twitter last Friday. First they tweeted an image of a lovely, normal family with the caption, "Meet the Warners." Then they tweeted a gif of that family morphing into Skrulls. That one comes with the caption, "Meet the Skrulls," and the information that this is a new title from Robbie Thompson and Niko Henrichon with a cover by Marcos Martin. It is set to be released in March 2019. You know what else comes out in March 2019? Captain Marvel, a movie that we know the Skrulls will play a big part in. This seems to be more of a case of striking while the Skrulls are hot than an actual movie tie-in, but it could be interesting. Rainbow Rowell, who is writing the current run of The Runaways, tweeted that she has read the first issue of Meet the Skrulls and called it "good and...

Rainbow Rowell has written a sequel to Carry On, her 2015 novel about queer wizards in love and danger, called Wayward Son.
Carry On, Rainbow Rowell's follow-up to her fandom-centric Fangirl, is at once both a clever, cathartic critique of the Harry Potter series and other Chosen One narratives and its own fantastical love story—and now it's getting a sequel!
Rowell has written a sequel to her young adult book about queer wizards Simon Snow and Baz and their friends at Watford School of Magicks. Here's the full, official synopsis:
Simon Snow is back and he's coming to America!
The story is supposed to be over.
Simon Snow did everything he was supposed to do. He beat the villain. He won the war. He even fell in love. Now comes the good part, right? Now comes the happily ever after…
So why can’t Simon Snow get off the couch?...

Most people will tell you their parents for better or for worse had a deep and definitive impact on their lives.
Everything from our mannerisms to pop culture interests to ideological and moral values are influenced by the people who raised us. And yet, from Shadowhunters to Riverdale, TV parents are often written like Charlie Brown's teacher: as faceless (and development-less) beings.
Whether it’s the tough-love mother, the bumbling dad or worse, the notoriously invisible parents, far too often we see television's older characters crafted as caricatures and afterthoughts.
Defined mostly by their roles as gatekeepers — to parties, dating, college, freedom, or even superpowers — parents can be skeletons of their dramatic potential, included only for the illusion of realism.
The select few who do manage to get their own relationship and professional complications still find themselves relegated to B and C plots.
There they help prop their children’s storylines,...
