[Editors Note: The following interview contains spoilers for the “Billions” finale, Season 7, Episode 12, “Admirals Fund.”]
“Billions” ends not with one man reigning supreme, but two titans shaking hands. Chuck (Paul Giamatti) and Axe (Damian Lewis) joined forces early in Season 7 and — despite a history filled with trickery and betrayal — remain loyal to the very end. Along with their devout team of stock traders and political savants, the duo takes down Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) and his bid for the presidency, before parting ways as friends. Chuck will continue working for the state of New York, while Axe is back behind the soon-to-be sleek desk of his hedge fund.
For a series that began with promises by both men to utterly destroy the other, some fans may be miffed that neither star is crowned as champion. But for showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the “Billions” series finale isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s an embodiment of what...

Showtime’s Billions season seven episode nine will, finally, find Mike Prince’s enemies making their big move(s). Episode eight felt weirdly out of place and like filler, so hopefully episode nine will more than make up for “The Owl.”
Episode nine, “Game Theory Optional,” will air on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, October 6, 2023. Season seven episodes also air on Showtime on Sundays at 8pm Et/Pt.

Showtime’s Billions season seven episode seven’s promo shows Mike Prince’s people hosting a black-tie gambling event. The promo also offers a snippet of Prince being turned down, something that doesn’t happen often enough. Episode six brought Bobby Axelrod back into the thick of things when he struck a deal with Chuck Rhoades to help out Grigor Andolov (John Malkovich), which meant that Axe now owes Chuck a favor. That has to come into play soon, given that we’re in the final stretch of the final season. However, there’s no sign of Axe in the promo or the episode’s photos.

Mike Prince has been able to finesse his way out of sticky situations so far in season seven of Showtime’s Billions, but the promo for episode five teases that Chuck Rhoades isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. [Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Billions” Season 6, Episode 12, “Cold Storage,” including the ending.]
As far as four-word thesis statements go, “Things you do matter” is about as efficient as they come. When Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) offers that sentiment up to Rian (Eva Victor) as a means of persuasion, it’s an effective blanket statement for the whole of “Billions” Season 6. The would-be benevolent billionaire makes speaks these words as an acknowledgment that none of his own actions come without consequences, however much he thinks he has the means to ignore them. But as has been the case for pretty much every major player this season, it’s always as important to consider to whom those things matter.
Per federal regulation, all “Billions” finales must start in medias res. While this one doesn’t have the same bait-and-switch as its predecessor (the “He here?” twist from the end of Season 5 is still a classic), this...

“Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber,” Showtime’s limited series about Travis Kalanick’s period as CEO of the rideshare company, runs on a simple either-or proposition. Kalanick focused all of his energies on the success of the corporation he ran, at the expense of his employees’ well-being and physical safety, as well as of ethics, labor practices and the law. This made him either a terrible boss or — as he sees it — the optimal one.
That this question is so easily answered accounts for why “Super Pumped” is such a punishing watch. Kalanick’s delusions and shortfalls as a manager were all explored in journalist Mike Isaac’s book of the same name, the source material for this series. While Uber was phenomenally successful at transforming the economy and bringing to heel local taxi services, Kalanick himself resigned from the company, amid scandal, in 2017. Here, those delusions and shortfalls...

Travis Kalanick, the former CEO of the ride-sharing company Uber, might seem like a tiresome subject for a seven-episode docudrama series: another move-fast-break-things tech bro whose “change the world” sloganeering barely disguises a seething insecurity. Yet these qualities are exactly what makes this such a plum role for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the star of the new series “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber.” That’s not meant as a dig at Gordon-Levitt, a talented actor with charisma and energy to spare. But his work as Kalanick does the neat trick of flipping a performer’s potential weaknesses — a sometime tendency to peacock, in his visible efforts to put on a show — into a character-defining strength. The show’s version of Kalanick, called “Tk” by his closest colleagues, is brash and cocksure; he’s also relentlessly self-conscious about his endless points of reference — “Zuck” (of Facebook), “Ek” (of Spotify), and any other...

“Billions” could conceivably go on forever. As long as there are people pulling down huge profits on asset manipulation, hostile corporate takeovers, and land grabs, there will be an opposite reaction, however equal. It’s the dynamic set up in the show’s early going, when Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) fancied himself a crusader against the excess and greed of the billionaire class. Back then, he had one particular wealth management operator in his sights, leading to a drawn-out psychological battle with Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) marked by uneasy alliances and scorched-earth tactics.
However primal that feud between money and the law might seem, though, the Chuck/Axe rivalry had reached a breaking point leading up to Season 6. The show had double-crossed and head-faked enough times that, even while still retaining its particular over-the-top joys, the well was beginning to run dry. So rather than try to retool the same dynamic yet again,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not seen “No Direction Home,” the Season 5 finale of “Billions.”
“Billions” will get a big reset in its upcoming sixth season as the durable Showtime drama shift its prism on the world of billionaires, vulture capitalists and global high finance.
“Billions” co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien confirm that Damian Lewis has bowed out after five seasons as the show’s central figure, the meglomaniac hedge fund billionaire Bobby Axelrod. Lewis may come back in the future — you can never say never — but Season 6 will move forward with a new king of what was once Axe’s castle, Mike Prince as played by Corey Stoll. In the narrative of “Billions,” “Herr Axelrod,” as Lewis was greeted in his final scene, will cool his heels in Switzerland for a while. Season 6 will bow Jan. 23, Showtime confirmed Sunday.

It’s easy to approach as of yet with the same cynicism that one approaches many other pandemic-shot films that take place over text messages, group chats, and video calls. Why, God, why do we need or want to see one of these? We lived it. Why would anyone in their right mind want to see a series of Zoom calls at the movies?
Thankfully, as of yet gets a little more mileage out of a tired concept, here embracing the inequities and impacts of the Covid era as writer/co-director Taylor Garron stars as Naomi, a young woman who has stayed in New York while roommate Sarah (Eva Victor) has relocated to Florida to be with her family. College friends that have grown apart, Sarah is shocked to find out Naomi is considering breaking the lockdown to have a socially distant date in the park with Reed (Amir Khan...

Francesca Reale, Jaboukie Young-White, Catherine Cohen (High Maintenance), and Brian Muller (The Deuce) star in Dating in New York, an indie comedy from first-time feature helmer Jonah Feingold. Set in New York, the film explores modern dating tropes such as ghosting, orbiting, and profound concepts like an “I miss you” text. Jerry Ferrara, Arturo Castro, Taylor Hill (Broken Heart Gallery), Alex Moffat (SNL), Eva Victor (Comedy Central), and Yedoye Travis (Comedy Central) co-star. The result was as messy and unfocused as any given person’s Twitter timeline at any given moment can be, but was thankfully glued together with moments of irreverent fun.
The chaos began early, with the 21+, invite-only guest list shuffled into a quickly crowded bar area while they waited for the doors to open. At the “Space Bar,” drinks called Hot Girl Summer and Yeehaw Agenda were served.
