Lisbon, Jan 9 (Ians) The Portuguese Football Federation (Fpf) announced on Monday Roberto Martinez as the new national football team coach until the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Martinez has coached Belgium for more than six years, starting in August 2016. During his reign, the “Red Devils” held the top position in the FIFA world rankings for more than three years, reports Xinhua.
The president of the Fpf, Fernando Gomes, stated that Martinez was his first and only option to lead the national team because he had “the desired profile” and the ability to lead Portugal “in the decisions of major competitions.”
“He would have to be ambitious, knowledgeable about international football, used to training players at the highest level, and with experience in major leagues and national teams. The place of birth of the new coach was never relevant,” said Gomes.

Doha, Dec 11 (Ians) Portugal head coach Fernando Santos said he had no regrets about starting Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench after his team was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup by Morocco on Saturday.
Youssef En-Nesyri headed home on the stroke of halftime after Portugal dominated possession without finding a way past Morocco’s defense in their quarterfinal here.
Ronaldo, who started on the bench for the second game in a row, was introduced in the 51st minute as a replacement for Ruben Neves, and made an immediate impact.
His deft one-touch pass for Joao Felix almost led to an equalizer and he forced a sharp block from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou with a first-time effort in stoppage time.
“I don’t regret starting him on the bench,” Santos was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency. “We put out a team that played very well against Switzerland (in the round...

Whether the iconic 37-year-old player will make a return to the starting eleven in the quarterfinals against Morocco on Saturday or will he be benched again remains to be seen but one individual who would like him to be confined to the bench is Morocco coach Walid Regragui.
Ronaldo was dropped by Fernando Santos after angering the Portugal coach with an exchange in their final World Cup group game against South Korea.
The absence of the former Manchester United striker was not felt against Switzerland with Goncalo Ramos replacing him and scoring a stunning hat-trick while Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro and Rafael Leao also found the net.
"I don’t know if Ronaldo will start. I hope he won’t. As a coach, I know he’s one of the best players in history. I’d be delighted if he didn’t play," Regragui, who coached a local Qatari side Al Duhail for a brief period,...

Doha (Qatar), Dec 5 (Ians) The Round of 16 ends on Tuesday with Morocco playing Spain, while Portugal take on Switzerland. Here are four things to look out for in the World Cup in Qatar.
1. No change of plan from Spain
The Japanese were able to disrupt Spain’s rhythm to beat them 2-1 in the last match in Group E, but don’t expect any change of plan from the Spanish, who will stay true to their passing game.
Ferran Torres, Aymeric Laporte and Jordi Alba should give Spain more control than against the Japanese, but the Spanish don’t have a team to radically alter the way they play.
Maybe Ansu Fati’s brief cameo indicates he could have a bigger role to play, but if any side has an identity in this World Cup, it is the Spanish, and they are not going to change after just one setback.

Al Rayyan (Qatar), Dec 1 (Ians) With Portugal already through to the knockouts at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar, their captain and superstar Cristiano Ronaldo may not play against South Korea in the final group match on Friday, Portugal’s coach Fernando Santos said on the eve of the match.
“Ronaldo will train and if he’s good to go, he will play,” Santos said at a pre-match press conference at the Main Media Centre in Al Rayyan, west of Doha, on Thursday. “I think it’s 50-50. We’ll decide after watching him in our training session.”
Ronaldo has been Public Enemy No. 1 among South Korean football fans since sitting out an exhibition match for Juventus in Seoul before some 65,000 fans, reports Yonhap.
Santos said any question about that incident should be directed at Ronaldo and Juventus, and added, “I think Ronaldo has great respect for South Korean people and players.

Doha, Nov 29 (Ians) By losing to Ghana 3-2 in their second Group H match of the FIFA World Cup on Monday, South Korea dug themselves into a hole — though its not deep enough that they won
Portugal will be the final group stage opponent for South Korea, who are in third place with one point, two behind Ghana. Uruguay also have one point, but South Korea hold the edge in the first tiebreak category, goal difference, at -1 to -2.
South Korea will not be able to control their own destiny when they take on Portugal for their final Group H match on Friday at Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, west of Doha.
The first part of the equation is straightforward. South Korea must win Friday.
And then, if Uruguay beat Ghana that same evening, South Korea and Uruguay will end up tied at four points and a tiebreaker will come in to play,...

On Monday, in the last match of the day at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, Portugal’s second successive win took them to six points and to the top of the Group H standings leaving Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea to fight for the second qualification spot from the group.
Portugal joins Brazil and France, the other two teams which have made it to the knockout stage so far.
Portugal started well on the ball, enjoying the lion’s share of possession but Uruguay fashioned the best chance. Rodrigo Bentancur worked his way brilliantly through Portugal’s defence but squandering the game’s best chance in the 33rd minute, firing straight at Diogo Costa from a one-on-one situation.
At the other end Bruno worked hard, winning 100 per cent of his tackles, registering a 93 per cent pass accuracy rate and generally stringing play together for his side and with Joao Felix looking...

Doha (Qatar), Nov 28 (Ians) Portugal coach Fernando Santos confirmed central defender Danilo Pereira will miss Monday’s FIFA World Cup Group H game against Uruguay after suffering a rib injury in training.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender is not the only injury concern for Santos, with attacking midfielder Otavio and left-back Nuno Mendes both question marks for Monday.
“As far as I know he (Pereira) is improving and we expect to have him back on the pitch very soon,” said Santos, adding that his squad had enough depth to overcome Pereira’s absence.
“We have three other centre halves who can replace him. We don’t need to make a drama of it,” he insisted, dropping a hint that 39-year-old Pepe could be the man to get the nod.
The match is a repeat of the 2018 FIFA World Cup last-16 tie, where Uruguay won 2-1 to send Portugal out of the tournament.

Doha, Nov 24 (Ians) Cristiano Ronaldo parted ways with Manchester United just days before Portugal’s opening game against Ghana at the Qatar World Cup, which head coach Fernando Santos insisted will not distract the team.
“This is something that has not even been discussed,” Santos said at the pre-game press conference on Wednesday. “This conversation has not come up at any moment, not even from him.”
Santos said that the team is in good shape and well-prepared for Ghana who “will cause us a lot of problems”, reports Xinhua.
“Ghana is a very well-organised team. Their game against Switzerland showed that. African teams have a lot of talent, unpredictability, and are always improving tactically. Today they are much more complete teams,” he added.
Santos also indicated his ambition and desire of winning the World Cup, saying “I believe we have the ability to fight for this goal. We want to...

Doha, Nov 16 (Ians) With the 2022 FIFA World Cup approaching, the participating teams are all fine-tuning their preparations for the quadrennial gala.
The star-studded Portugal led by Cristiano Ronaldo are the favourites in Group H, but it is by no means a one-horse race, as Uruguay, South Korea and Ghana will all have what it takes to make the competition wide open.
Portugal enter the scene on November 24 by taking on Ghana, then meet Uruguay before their final group game with South Korea.
In 2018, Portugal crashed out in the round of 16 after a 2-1 defeat to Uruguay. And in Brazil in 2014, Portugal suffered a group stage exit despite a 2-1 victory over Ghana. Pushing the timeline backwards further, South Korea enjoyed a shock win over Portugal en route to their history-making success in 2002.

Lisbon, Sep 28 (Ians) Portugal manager Fernando Santos has claimed that his team’s elimination from UEFA Nations League A was unfair. At the Municipal Stadium in Braga, visitors Spain upset Portugal 1-0 with Alvaro Morata’s 88th-minute strike to top Group 2 with 11 points. Portugal finished second with 10 points.
“It is true that in the first half Spain had more possession without creating major problems. We lacked some patience, we played with a lot of long passes, but at passing the ball the team did well and got there,” the coach explained.
According to Santos, Portugal created goal situations, while Spain did nothing but try to stay more in possession, reports Xinhua.
“We tried to correct that at half-time, and we were pushing hard at the restart. We had a great opportunity, but we didn’t take it, and then Spain started to have more ball; and we had more difficulty,...
