- Social secretary of Eleanor Roosevelt when she began an affair with Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1916. When Eleanor discovered the affair in 1918, she offered Franklin a divorce. He considered it until his mother counseled him that divorce would destroy his political career. He broke with Lucy, and promised Eleanor he would never see her again. However, they maintained in secret contact, and she was with him when he died, a fact kept hidden from the public.

- Husband Winthrop Rutherfurd was secretly engaged to Consuelo Vanderbilt when her mother, Alva Vanderbilt, pressured her to meet Charles Spencer-Churchill, 9th Duke of Marlborough. She broke with Rutherfurd only after Alva said she would die of a heart attack if she did not marry Marlborough. The forced marriage made Consuelo the Consuelo Vanderbilt.
