[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Wedding Season Season 1 Episode 8 finale.] Hulu‘s Wedding Season takes the thrill of falling in love literally. When Katie and Stefan meet at a wedding, they spark an instant connection. The only problem is, Katie’s engaged to someone else. Three months (and more wedding run-ins) later, Gavin crashes Katie’s wedding declaring his love for her. She rejects him, the wedding continues, but then her new husband and his family are murdered during the reception, and Katie and Stefan are the main suspects. Still in love with each other, they then go on the run in an attempt to prove their innocence (and lead viewers on a merry ride as to whether they will end up together). Wedding Season‘s eight episodes are a genre-busting good time. Here, Drea and Wedding Season creator Oliver Lyttelton explain the combination rom-com/whodunnit thriller format, the chemistry ...

Credit “Wedding Season” for not taking the easy opening. It takes a lot of confidence to start up an eight-episode season with an “I object!” moment. It’s how the show introduces us to Stefan (Gavin Drea) one of 2022’s unluckiest characters, and not just because his gambit to break up the wedding of Katie (Rosa Salazar), the woman he loves, is dead on arrival.
His hopes at whisking Katie away for a fairy-tale ending aren’t the only thing that dies that day. At the reception, Katie’s intended Hugo (George Webster) and a number of his family members keel over on top of their chicken/steak/vegetarian option. While she somehow manages to escape unharmed, Stefan is hauled into an interrogation room to share everything he knows about the woman suddenly leaving a trail of dead bodies in her wake.

At first, Hulu’s “Wedding Season” seems to be a charming enough take on a British “Four Weddings and a Funeral”-style romantic comedy, complete with a hopeless romantic boy, his boisterous friend group, and the enigmatic American girl he falls for the minute he meets her at — where else? — a wedding. But both Oliver Lyttelton’s take on the setup and the American at its center have more up their sleeves than a charming meet-cute. The second that initial layer’s peeled, “Wedding Season” (not to be confused with Netflix’s recent movie of the same name) is off and running in another direction entirely — a murder mystery with roots in the kind of deep corruption that would give Jason Bourne nightmares. Whether or not it all hangs together will be for the audience to decide, with all eight episodes out Sept. 8 on Hulu (but only seven made available...

The rom-com is a genre that leans into the restoration of order. No matter how messy things are when we start, by the end of a tiny 90 minutes, we can count on the boy getting the girl or the girl getting the boy or — as things get more progressive — the gender/gender identity/sexual orientation combination of your choosing, provided that we reach “happiness.” It’s a genre that’s satisfying, but the potential for dull inevitability has encouraged storytellers to subvert expectations, upping the stakes on the screwball antics and challenging our notions of what “happy” endings even look like.
The rise of more close-ended stories on the small screen has been particularly fertile ground for rom-com subversion, with results ranging from brilliant (Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World) to forgettable (Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral) to ambitious...

Wedding Season, which premieres on Disney+ this week, is many genres tied up in one. It’s a romance, a comedy, it action, it’s light and it’s dark – there’s detectives, brides, grooms – and murder. It’s all been expertly balanced by writer Oliver Lyttelton, and to mark launch of the show, we had the pleasure in speaking to the man himself, paired with none other than the film’s (co)lead, Gavin Drea – who plays Stefan (great name).
We discuss capturing the film’s tricky tonality, and the duo also speak about collaborating with Rosa Salazar, who plays Katie to Gavin’s Stefan. In fact, we dive into the name Stefan – and the process behind deciding names for characters, from a writer’s perspective. We also dip into a brief chat about the second season, and of course we speak about weddings.

Emily in Paris exec Lilly Burns has predicted more U.S. and UK production companies will co-produce together as she unearths how Jax Media and UK indie Dancing Ledge Productions came together to bring Disney+’s Wedding Season to screen.
The genre-bending action comedy is the first UK Disney+ original to launch and rolls out on adult-skewing vertical Star and Hulu in the U.S. from September 8.
Described by Burns as “Four Weddings and a Funeral meets Die Hard” and starring Canadian-American Alita: Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar and Irishman Gavin Drea (Vikings: Valhalla), Wedding Season is a rare co-production between a U.S. producer, Jax, and Chris Carey’s Fremantle-backed UK indie Dancing Ledge, which he runs with Laurence Bowen.
Jax worked with French production services outfit First Step on Netflix smash Emily in Paris and Burns said deep-pocketed streamer shows are “elevated” by having producers from different countries behind them.

The first trailer for Hulu’s “Wedding Season” ensures that audiences will think twice before saying “I do.”
From the producers of “Broad City,” “Difficult People,” “Younger” and “Search Party,” this action-packed romantic comedy revolves around Katie and Stefan, who fall for one another at a wedding and begin an affair despite the pesky little reality that Katie is engaged. The police naturally think think Stefan is the culprit, he thinks Katie might have done it, and no one knows for sure what the truth is. Conspiracy and hijinx, of course, ensue.

Disney+ is giving fans a first look at upcoming U.K. original series “Wedding Season” in a new trailer.
Not to be confused with the recent Netflix film, Disney+’s “Wedding Season” is a “genre busting” eight-part dark comedy that sees a bride’s new family poisoned on the night of her wedding.
The Maze Runner franchise’s Rosa Salazar plays Katie, who meets Stefan (Gavin Drea of “Vikings: Valhalla”) at a wedding. The duo quickly strike up an affair – despite the fact Katie is due to get married to someone else in two months. On the night of her wedding, Katie’s new husband is mysteriously found dead – along with his entire family – and Stefan quickly becomes the main suspect.
Stefan, meanwhile, is wondering whether Katie may be capable of more than just infidelity.

The embargo has lifted on the Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Winslet, Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul, Gal Gadot and Anthony Mackie starring "Triple 9." While he had high hopes for the John Hillcoat directed crime flick, our own Oliver Lyttelton was disappointed, calling it a series of "empty genre tropes going through motions without much of a theme to show for it." Still, that cast is hard to ignore. Read More: Interview: John Hillcoat Talks The Top Five Influences For His Prohibition-Era Gangster Movie 'Lawless' The Black List approved script by Matt Cook follows a group of corrupt cops who are manipulated into pulling off a daring bank heist, which will involve killing one of their own. Here's the official synopsis: In Triple 9, a crew of dirty cops is blackmailed by the Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist. The only way to pull it off is...

Landing on the Sight & Sound and Cahiers Du Cinema best of the year lists, as well as making the rankings of the Best Of 2015 from our own writers Jessica Kiang and Oliver Lyttelton, for those of us who weren't able to catch Apichatpong Weerasethakul's "Cemetery Of Splendour" on the festival circuit, the good news is that it's finally coming to cinemas. And even more, a new trailer is here. Read More: Cannes Review: Apichatpong Weerasethakul's 'Cemetery Of Splendour' Starring Banlop Lomnoi, Jenjira Pongpas, and Jarinpattra Rueangram, the film is another journey into the director's unique world where drama and magic seem to fold over on themselves, and he's once again spinning a story that falls somewhere between memory and fairy tale. The word on “Spectre” is out from the U.K. and it’s… great! That is, unless you’re our U.K. reviewer Oliver Lyttelton, because he says the film doesn’t have the goods. Of course, if you crave consensus and uniformity as much as our comments section, you’ll just believe he’s crazy, but maybe, just maybe, you’ll have to judge for yourself. Meanwhile, did you know Daniel Craig expected to turn down James Bond when he was first offered the role? “It was going to be an easy decision for me,” Craig told EW this week, assuming he would just turn it down based on all the previous films. “They were going to show me a script that was like other Bond movies. It was going to have the gags in it, what Pierce did, what Sean had done. They’d all be in there.

“You’re The Worst” didn’t have the strongest ratings when it premiered on FX last summer, but it wound up being the object of affection for those who decided to give it a chance. Our own Oliver Lyttelton is one such person who raved about the comedy last September, declaring it to be one of the best TV shows of that summer. Surely he, among the show’s other fans, were delighted when FX announced they’d be renewing “You’re the Worst” for a second season, moving it over to Fxx, their sister network. Read More: Watch: 'You're The Worst' Season 2 Teasers Parody 'Sixteen Candles' And 'Spider-Man' And as the latest trailer proves, despite the fact that the show’s lead characters (Jimmy and Gretchen) are now living together, that doesn’t mean they’re about to change their ways. Whether it’s excessive drinking, kinky sex, going...

And just like that, the festivities on the Croisette are winding down this weekend. The Cannes Film Festival proper will hand out their awards tomorrow, but first is the Cannes Directors' Fortnight, and today the jury has honored what they feel is the best of the fest, and certainly our critics can't argue. Ciro Guerra's "Embrace Of The Serpent" took the Art Cinema Award. Jessica Kiang was bewitched by this one, calling it in her review, "a work of art, and one of the most singular cinematic experiences you could hope to have in Cannes, or anywhere really." What else is there to say? Read More: Check Out All Of Our Cannes 2015 Coverage Here Meanwhile, Arnaud Desplechin's "My Golden Years" landed the Sacd Prize. Oliver Lyttelton was taken by the director's latest, writing in his review that though it tracks familiar narrative territory, "it's written, shot, cut, and performed with such palpable joy,...

Jeremy Saulnier "followed up his ultra-low budget debut Murder Party with Blue Ruin, a nifty, beautifully-made twist on the revenge movie that won over not just gorehounds, but also cinephiles," writes Oliver Lyttelton at the Playlist. "And his new film Green Room cements his promise by taking all the strengths of Blue Ruin and building on them, while straightening out some of the weaknesses too." For the Guardian's Peter Bradshaw, Yorgos Lanthimos's first feature in English, The Lobster, is "an adventure which begins by being bizarre and hilarious but appears to run out of ideas at its mid-way point." But the Playlist's Oliver Lyttelton finds that the cast—Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman, Ben Whishaw, John C. Reilly, Jessica Barden, Ashley Jensen and Aggeliki Papoulia—commits to the absurd premise "with gusto." The Hollywood Reporter's Leslie Felperin: "Co-screenwriter Efthimis Filippou’s collaboration with the director is faithfully served by DoP Thimios Bakatakis, using lots of long lenses and natural lighting to create stunningly composed tableaus, and editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis smoothing down the tonal shifts to a glassy sheen." » - David Hudson...

The best thing about David Cronenberg's "Maps To The Stars" opening at the end of this month is that I can finally stop writing about "Maps To The Stars." I've pretty much exhausted every possible angle regarding this movie, but here's one last red band trailer. Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska and John Cusack feature in this ensemble tale which dives deeply into the crooked, bitter, cynical heart of Hollywood, seen through the eyes of an aging actress trying to remain relevant. This new red band spot has swears, provides a glimpse at the film's threeway sequence and perhaps gives off a more energetic vibe than the actual movie. But as our own Oliver Lyttelton notes, as quoted in the trailer, this one is "deliciously entertaining." "Maps To The Stars" opens in limited release and VOD on Friday, February 27th.

Update: Variety has corrected their story, adding that "Lost River" will open in limited release in New York and Los Angeles in April. Warner Bros. couldn't have asked for better buzz surrounding Ryan Gosling's directorial debut "Lost River." Even though he wasn't starring in the effort, interest was very high in the arty movie, with the actor/filmmaker rounding up an ensemble that includes Christina Hendricks, Ben Mendelsohn, Eva Mendes, Saoirse Ronan and Matt Smith to tell his fantastical story of a mother, son and an underwater world. And then the movie got selected for the Cannes Film Festival, adding more hype and a touch of prestige to the project....until those first reviews rolled in. Critics got the knives out for the movie, while our own Oliver Lyttelton called the ambitious effort "ultimately kind of juvenile and dumb...there are more moments where you'll roll your eyes rather than inwardly applauding.

"How will 'Gone Girl' do at Oscarsc" That was the subject line of an e-mail I woke up to yesterday morning, sent by none other than industry awards blog Gold Derby. I should be used to seeing headlines like that, now that we're knee-deep in awards season following the start of the fall film festival circuit, which began in Venice and continued on to Telluride and Toronto before arriving in New York this weekend. And if I'm not already used to it, I should probably start, because now that October is only a couple days away, there really is no end in sight. But still, it was an interesting e-mail to see sitting in my inbox. Since it was Sunday morning and there wasn't much else to do, I took the bait and opened the article, which had been published shortly after 9:00 Am (Pdt) Saturday morning, meaning it was...

If they don't steal your heart it must be stone-hinged.
