“The Boys” is undeniably captivating — the Prime Video adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s satirical superhero comic can be filthy, violent, irreverent and hilarious all at once. But the ongoing conflict between the show’s titular vigilantes and the “Supes” backed by malevolent conglomerate Vought International also keeps viewers transfixed with a layered narrative grounded in a relatable reality. It’s enough to make you forget that these flawed characters are wearing capes — even in the midst of all the kickass superhero action.
The challenge of “The Boys” is in creating an elaborate world that infuses its shock and awe with swirling drama and honest character motivation. In the videos below, visual effects supervisor Stephan Fleet, stunt coordinator John Koyama, and costume designers Laura Jean Shannon and Michael Ground describe how a world with endless possibilities is better off when its dildo brawls, hallucinated pizza parlor mascots, and...

Apparently, it wasn't hard to get Prime Video to approve that penis scene in season three of The Boys. The Boys is known for its over the top and shocking moments, and the exploding penis scene in the first episode of the new season was certainly no exception. While it may be ingrained in your memory, for those that need a reminder, during the season three premiere of the superhero comedy, Termite (Brett Geddes), a parody of Marvel's Ant-Man, sneezed inside his lover's (Bruce Langley) genitals, causing the man to explode from inside of his penis. And while showrunner Eric Kripke was surprised how "cool with it" Amazon executives were about creating the scene, there was one...

Exclusive Update, 2:38 Pm: Two days after Starz made public its lack of faith in any more seasons of American Gods, producers Fremantle on Wednesday said the series based on Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed novel is still alive and kicking.
“Fremantle is committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe,” a spokesperson for the company told Deadline of a possible fourth season or more. “With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story.”
The statement today backs remarks made Tuesday by EP Gaiman that the Ricky Whittle- and Ian McShane-led series wasn’t going quietly into the premium cable night.
Two early possibilities for more American Gods that may be coming into focus are Netflix and Amazon, we hear.

American Gods is canceled, but it may not be dead yet.
EP Neil Gaiman responded to the cancellation after Starz swung the axe, and it's clear the author envisions a future for the series.
“It’s definitely not dead,” tweeted the author, who penned the 2001 book on which the series is based.
"I'm grateful to the team at @Starz for the American Gods journey so far. Fremantle (who make Ag) are committed to finishing the story that began in episode 1, and right now we're all just waiting to see which way forward is best, and who it'll be with."
Starz confirmed the cancellation on Monday, just a week after the third season finale, which left fans pondering what would become of the characters at the wheel of the story.

Will the fight continue? After huge season-to-season declines in the ratings, Starz has cancelled the American Gods TV series. There won't be a fourth season but, the show may still get some kind of a conclusion.

The TV gods have turned their favor away from American Gods, at least for now. The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane will not return for a fourth season on Starz, the network confirmed Monday.
The news of the premature end to the often-troubled series is not altogether unexpected, and follows the Season 3 finale on March 21. That season-ender saw Whittle’s Shadow Moon seemingly killed after a vigil at the mythical Tree of Life for his seemingly deceased and estranged father, Mr. Wednesday/Odin, played by McShane. A pivotal point in Gaiman’s book, the incident set up American Gods‘ fourth season with Wednesday taking advantage of Shadow Moon’s sacrifice for Wednesday’s own resurgence in the battle against the New Gods.

This article contains spoilers for American Gods season 3.
It seems that throughout the history of technology, there has been no greater driver of technological change than the most simple of human desires: sex. From nickelodeon reels of women dancing in skimpy costumes to the home video format war of the ‘80s to the modern dating apps of today, sex sells, and sex has always been at the forefront of human invention. Someone makes a product, and someone else figures out how to use it to gratify humanity’s baser urges. To that end, it makes sense that the ancient Queen of Sheba and love goddess Bilquis and Technical Boy keep running into one another, despite their apparent differences.
Two American Gods, one old, one new. The goddess of the most intimate act that can occur between two or more people and the soulless personification of every Internet pop-up ad turning that connection into a commodity.

To call the production of American Gods’ first two seasons problem-plagued is to put it mildly; Old Testament Egypt had fewer problems with plagues.
After a successful first season, showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed, followed by actors Kristin Chenoweth and Gillian Anderson. In February 2018, Jesse Alexander and original series author Neil Gaiman were announced as co-showrunners for the second season, but Alexander was removed in September 2018 and the lion’s share of the second season was guided by directing producer Chris Byrne and line producer Lisa Kussner. Season 3 now brings new showrunner Charles “Chic” Eglee, who reunites with Gaiman and deals with another big cast turnover: New Media (Kahyun Kim), the Djinn (Mousa Kraish), Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber), and Mr. Nancy (Orlando Jones) have all departed from the show, with the lattermost cast member doing so in explosive fashion.

American Gods returns to Starz on Sunday, January 10, and fans of the novel will love what lies ahead.
With the action moving toward the snowy town of Lakeside, the action slows down just a bit, allowing for characters to get the attention they deserve.
Front and center for American Gods Season 3 are Ricky Whittle, Yetide Badaki, and Bruce Langley as Shadow Moon, Bilquis, and Technical Boy, respectively. Along with Neil Gaiman, they chatted with us on an American Gods press day, so we're here to share what we've learned with you.
I've seen the first four episodes, and the new season is grounded and engrossing. It brings to light the mesmerizing pages of the book, and given the many changes from page to screen, it's much appreciated.
Season 3 sets aside a little of the flash from previous seasons to establish the setting and fully explore the characters we've grown to love.

Starz will take viewers back to the wonderful world of American Gods in January.
Neil Gaiman has announced a January 10 premiere for the hit drama's third season.
Gaiman took to Twitter to pen a letter explaining some of the changes on the series and how they will be relevant in the current climate.
"When we embarked upon making season 3 of American Gods, we had no idea how timely it would turn out to be," Gaiman, who penned the novel and serves as an EP on the series adaptation, writes.
"We knew we wanted to return to what people loved and responded to in the book: that it was time for Shadow to go to the little town of Lakeside and try to lose himself in normality."

“American Gods” will return to Starz for Season 3 starting on Jan. 10.
The Season 3 premiere date was revealed as a message within an image of the Lakeside Clunker Board from Hinzelmann’s shop, referenced within author Neil Gaiman’s novel on which the show is based. In addition to sharing that image, Gaiman, who also created the show and serves as executive producer on it, wrote a letter to the fans, in which he addressed the timeliness of the forthcoming season’s plot, which is set to include more of a focus on immigrants and diversity.
“The struggles of the gods and the people in Season 3 of ‘American Gods’ are the struggles of America,” Gaiman wrote. “We didn’t think it would prove as timely when we plotted it, nor did I think the novel would still be relevant when I wrote it over 20 years ago. But I’m glad it’s happening now,...

American Gods, old and new, are coming back to life in the new year, at least on the small screen. It’s timely too, because “the struggles of the gods and the people in Season 3 of American Gods are the struggles of America,” according to author Neil Gaiman.
The series starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane, based on EP Gaiman’s award-winning 2001 novel, will debut its third season on January 10 on Starz.
With former Walking Dead EP Charles “Chic” Eglee in the seemingly ever-changing showrunner seat, the 10-episode new season will take viewers to one of the chiller parts of the divinely inhabited book.
The teasing art work that Starz dropped today reveals not only the debut date of the new season, but a visual reference to Lakeside Clunker Board from Hinzelmann’s shop, a pretty heavy piece of knowledge for fans of the book and the show.

We haven’t heard from the American Gods universe in awhile. In fact, it’s been over a year and a half since season 2 concluded and the show went through another round of … say it with us: behind the scenes drama.
Well the fine folks at Starz have apparently decided that we’ve waited long enough. During the show’s appearance at New York Comic Con, producers unveiled the first real footage of season 3 as part of an exciting new teaser. You can watch the 90-second clip below.
There’s always a lot to unpack in just about every new bit of American Gods footage, but this time around there’s really a lot to unpack. Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) is feeling himself and it shows. In addition to a new hairstyle, a new location, and new attitude, Shadow is ready to accept season 3’s tagline: “I Am A God.

Based on the Neil Gaiman books, the Starz drama of modern deities American Gods is currently in its second season and has been renewed for a third. At The Contenders Emmys, Deadline’s Dominic Patten talked to show stars Ricky Whittle, Emily Browning, Pablo Schreiber, and Ian McShane, who also serves as Executive Producer, about the current season, how the fantasy translates to issues in real life and expanding the universe of Gods.
Currently in its second season, McShane, who plays Mr. Wednesday, said that the show is going back to the books more as they dive deeper into the New and Old Gods. “You have to get back to the source material to get to know the people,” he said. McShane also teased that the upcoming season will take place Lakeside — and for diehard fans, that’s a huge deal.

American Gods season 3 will happen on Starz, with Chic Eglee as showrunner.
American Gods Season 3 is a go! Starz announced only one episode into American Gods Season 2, that the adaptation of Neil Gaiman's beloved novel, will be getting a third season. This is good news for anyone who is into mesmerizing visuals and fantastical commentary on today's sociopolitical status quo. Also, for anyone who wants to see this full story brought to the screen. While the second season itself was hit and miss, it's good to know we'll get more of the story on screen before it all wraps up.
Who will be showrunning American Gods Season 3? Usually, when a TV show gets a third season renewal, it's pretty obvious who will be helming the ship. But, given that American Gods allegedly fired its Season 1 showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green and then reportedly later asked Jesse Alexander,...

“American Gods” is returning with a new showrunner.
The Fremantle-produced Starz television series based on the Neil Gaiman novel has officially been picked up for a third season and has tapped Charles “Chic” Eglee to lead the season as showrunner and executive producer. The news comes less than a week after the show launched its second season.
Eglee’s credits include “Hemlock Grove,” “The Walking Dead,” “Dexter,” and “The Shield.” He is repped by CAA and Gendler & Kelly.
He will now be the third showrunner at the helm of the series. Bryan Fuller and Michael Green served as co-showrunners during the first season but departed over clashes with Fremantle over the show’s budget and creative direction. Jesse Alexander shepherded “Gods” through its second season, but he was reportedly sidelined during production without being officially let go.

When the late, great critic Gene Siskel hated a movie, he’d say he wished the filmmakers had asked themselves, “Is my film more interesting than a documentary of the same actors having lunch together?” This question applies neatly to television as well. I’ve often sat through hilarious cast press conferences for sitcoms that had failed to make me so much as smile, and wondered how that energy couldn’t be properly harnessed when the cameras rolled.

A new trailer for season 2 of ‘American Gods’ has premiered highlighting the battle that is on the horizon for Ian McShane and Ricky Whittle.
The first season built this mystery world by focusing on Ex-convict Shadow Moon as he roams a world he doesn’t understand, left adrift by the recent, tragic death of his wife. Little did he know his life was about to change after he meets a crafty, charismatic con man named Mr. Wednesday, who offers Shadow a job as his bodyguard. As their journey begins, Shadow encountered a hidden America where magic is real and fear grows over the ascending power of New Gods like Technology and Media. In a grand plan to combat the threat, Mr. Wednesday attempts to unite the Old Gods to defend their existence and rebuild the influence that they’ve lost, leaving Shadow struggling to accept this new world and his place in it.

Starz has released a second season trailer for “American Gods,” which returns to the cabler Mar. 10, depicting the brewing war between Gods old and new in the series based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name.
“When people first came to America they brought us with them,” the trailer begins, flashing images of Old Gods including Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) and Mr. Nancy (Orlando Jones).
Quickly, the images become more modern and Sarah McLachlan’s “Dear God” plays. “Gradually they abandoned us,” the voiceover continues. “Now there are new Gods growing in America, and they want to destroy us.”
As Mr. Wednesday tosses Shadow (Ricky Whittle) a spear he tells him “war’s a-coming” and that he has a “big role” for him. The trailer also offers first looks at new characters for the season played by Sakina Jaffrey and Dean Winters.

Listen, there’s a lot of television out there, and none of it plays by the rules anymore. Series take breaks that can last anywhere from a few months to a few years. Shows pop up on different channels than they last aired on, or they shift from TV to streaming. Limited series become ongoing programs, movies are broken up into miniseries, and everyone watches their favorite shows on their own schedule anyway.
So it may not seem all that important to note what pre-existing shows are coming back in 2019, but it is, in fact, absolutely vital. Maybe you didn’t realize “American Gods” was making an early year comeback, and you need to reactivate your Starz membership. Perhaps you thought “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” was still airing on Fox, when it’s actually over on NBC now. Maybe you forgot about shows like “Fleabag” and “Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” or didn...

The old gods are coming back! Almost two years after the first season wowed viewers, Starz's TV adaptation of American Gods is returning for its second season. After much uncertainty as to whether it would return for a second season at all, “American Gods” now has a teaser for its sophomore go-round.
Original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed the Starz drama due to creative differences last year, but will retain executive-producer credits as it vaults further into the unknown; the two adapted Neil Gaiman’s bestselling novel for television, with Jesse Alexander taking over their duties from here on out.
