Mark Houck, a Catholic anti-abortion activist who was accused of assaulting a 72-year-old clinic volunteer outside a Planned Parenthood in Philadelphia, was acquitted Monday of charges that he instigated the encounter to intimidate the organization’s workers, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
The Department of Justice charged Houk with two counts of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (Face) Act. The DOJ accused Houck of twice assaulting the volunteer at the Planned Parenthood Elizabeth Blackwell Health Center.
According to the DOJ indictment obtained by The Daily Beast, the then-47-year-old Houck “forcefully shoved B.

Exclusive: Wme has signed animator Sanjay Patel, who was Academy Award-nominated this year for his short film Sanjay’s Super Team. That short was made with Pixar and accompanied the company’s feature The Good Dinosaur. The pic was based on Patel's own childhood experience as an immigrant growing up in the U.S. and received critical acclaim as the first Pixar production to feature a diverse main character. Patel rose through the ranks at Pixar as an animator and then…...

The 88th Annual Academy Awards are just around the corner on Sunday evening, so once again, it’s time to lay down my predictions for who has the best chance of winning in each of the 24 categories, along with a bit of analysis as to why they appear to be the frontrunners. As usual, I’ll start from the smallest categories and work my way up, so let’s get started:

While the Oscar’s best animated feature category has only existed since 2001, the award for best animated short has been presented since 1932. This year five short films from all across the globe are competing in the category.
With the exception of Pixar’s Sanjay’s Super Team, which accompanied the studio’s feature length film, The Good Dinosaur last year, most Oscar fans filling out their scorecards likely haven’t seen this year’s competitors for best animated short. Here’s a breakdown of all five films competing and which one may just have the edge.
Prologue: A highly stylized short centered on an intense, and brutally violent, struggle between four warriors, witnessed by a young girl. The short comes from the United Kingdom and was directed by two-time Oscar winner, Richard Williams, who won the best animated short Oscar in 1973 for A Christmas Carol.

The wonderfully weird, hilariously morbid “World of Tomorrow” crams in more disturbing, sinister science-fiction ideas than a decade’s worth of blockbusters. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Animated shorts tend to be nearly silent films. They’ve got music and sound FX, sure, but often no dialogue: something about this particular mode of cinematic storytelling seems to inspire filmmakers to eschew it. Which makes my pick as this year’s best among the Oscar-nominated animated shorts an anomaly: it’s the only one of this year’s film nominees to feature dialogue. Extensively. Unlike its fellow nominees, the wonderfully weird and hilariously morbid “World of Tomorrow” [IMDb | official site], from American filmmaker Don Hertzfeldt, would not work at all were its dialogue removed. Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur opened last week, and like every past Pixar feature, it kicks off with a short film. "Sanjay’s Super Team," directed by Pixar artist Sanjay Patel, is the 30th such short, and like its predecessors, it's entertaining and poignant in equal measure. But it’s also a step forward for the studio — a story told from an Indian-American perspective, one so personal that its director wasn’t sure he should go through with it. (Patel's father ultimately told him it would be bad karma not to, “and karma’s a very big deal to my father," Patel says. "He felt it was my duty to at least try.") Patel and Pixar producer Nicole Grindle chatted about precisely how a short gets made and why the mini-movies are crucial to Pixar’s evolution as a creative powerhouse. The process begins with a Pixar-wide call.“We let...

Pixar short film: Those three words bring to mind clever, charming little movies like “For the Birds,” “Geri’s Game,” and, of course, “Luxo Jr.” With the latest in that line of animated shorts, “Sanjay’s Super Team,” Pixar is going in a few new directions, with both story and animation style. “Super Team” will screen in front of “The Good Dinosaur,” Pixar’s new feature opening in theaters this Wednesday. It’s a very personal story. Similar could be said of “La Luna,” the short paired with 2012’s “Brave.” But with “Sanjay’s Super Team,” Pixar head John Lasseter encouraged director Sanjay Patel to make the short even more personal and more directly based on his childhood than his earlier versions of the film, and Patel was surprised that the studio wanted his name to be in the title. The short tells the story of little Sanjay, who is...

If there’s a trio of categories that aren’t given the respect that they deserve (or frankly, any respect at all), it’s the short film categories. Be it Best Animated Short, Best Documentary Short, or Best Live Action Short, they all are mostly ignored by the masses, especially when the first two have feature length cousins in Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary Feature to compete with as well. Still, they deserve to be noticed, so I wanted to quickly list what’s in contention this year. I’ve included the categories in my most recent Oscar prediction update, so there’s that as well. The Academy Awards are the sum total of all the categories, so these have their place, no doubt about that. It’s just a shame that more folks don’t recognize this. Here are the three short subject categories and the remaining contenders...

Continuing with long-standing tradition, Pixar will release a new short in advance of its newest feature-length film. Earlier this year we met a lonely signing volcano in Lava before Inside Out, and now we’re getting ready to meet Sanjay’s Super Team.
Playing in theatres when The Good Dinosaur opens on November 25th, Sanjay’s Super Team is Pixar’s latest short film featuring a colourful cast of characters.
Directed by Sanjay Patel, the short film is inspired by Patel’s own childhood where he felt conflicted between the Hindu traditions of his family and the modern world, which for a little boy, is represented by his love of superhero cartoons. His attention torn between his beloved cartoon heroes and his daily ritual mediation and prayer with his father, the animated Sanjay daydreams about a world where Hindu gods and superheroes are one.

Emotionally finding the right balance between embracing modern pop culture and honoring your family’s traditions can be an equally challenging and rewarding experience. While children and teens are more often drawn to keeping up with the latest trends in their society, their parents often anticipate the day they’ll also cherish their long-honored customs. That important transition of children finally accepting their family’s beliefs is intriguingly showcased in Disney and Pixar’s upcoming animated short, ‘Sanjay’s Super Team.’ The new film from Pixar Animation Studios marks the directorial debut of animator Sanjay Patel. ‘Sanjay’s Super Team’ is the latest short from the production company that reflects the eclectic culture of the animators [ Read More ]

Check out this first clip from Pixar Animation Studios’ new short film, “Sanjay’s Super Team.”
Director and artist Sanjay Patel uses his own experience to tell the story of a young, first-generation Indian-American boy whose love for western pop culture comes into conflict with his father’s traditions.
Sanjay is absorbed in the world of cartoons and comics, while his father tries to draw him into the traditions of his Hindu practice. Tedium and reluctance quickly turn into an awe-inspiring adventure as the boy embarks on a journey he never imagined, returning with a new perspective that they can both embrace.
“Sanjay’s Super Team” is Patel’s personal story and a “mostly true” chronicle of his journey to understand the Hindu world so important to his parents.

But grudgingly, he would help his dad gather marigold petals for a ceremony called a puja and sit silently beside him in meditation for what seemed like an eternity. “There was very much this culture clash of me wanting to fit in and be “normal,” and my father having this practice and tradition that he wanted to pass on to his...

Disney and Pixar has recently teased its next animation, The Good Dinosaur, with a new trailer but they’re also sharing the short film that will be accompanying it onto the big screen. Following in the illustrious footsteps of Presto the Rabbit, Luxo Jr. and most recently, Lava’s lovelorn volcano Uku comes Sanjay in Sanjay’s Super Team. This month’s Empire debuts a new picture showing that super team in action. Those Hindu superheroes, who young Sanjay encounters in his adventure, are (left to right): Durga, goddess of power and protection, the four-armed Vishnu, and the badass-looking Hanuman. These aren’t the Avengers though, stresses director Sanjay Patel. “I had to be clear that I didn’t want them to be superheroes with six-packs throwing fists and punches everywhere,” Patel tells Empire. “I wanted them to be graceful and androgynous, and that was exciting for the animators.

Back in April, the first imagery from Pixar’s next short film offering, Sanjay’s Super Team, arrived online. With the film planning a Comic-Con panel at the San Diego event this Thursday, new pictures have arrived via USA Today, with director Sanjay Patel talking up the project. Sanjay’s Super Team channels Patel’s own childhood, spent growing up in the California motel owned by his Indian immigrant parents and chafing against his father’s wishes that he pay more attention to their religious beliefs. Especially when he was ringing a bell to call the lad to morning meditation. "I knew exactly what that meant: 'Turn off the TV, Sanjay, and get your tail over here. We're going to chant and count mala beads for half an hour,'" Patel says. "And I'm like, 'I don't really want to do that. I really want to watch Voltron.'" But...

Yay Pixar! The animation studio has unveiled a first look at fun some concept art from the new short film Sanjay's Super Team, which is showing in front of The Good Dinosaur in theaters later this November. The short will premiere officially at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, which is why they're drumming up some buzz with some good publicity. Here's the first bit of concept art revealed by the La Times for Pixar's new short film...
