There seems to be no need to wonder if the Empire TV show will be cancelled or renewed for a seventh season. While the series remains one of Fox's top-rated shows, the network announced that season six would be the final year. It's also been revealed that former co-star Jussie Smollett won't be returning following his real-life drama. (Warning: This post contains spoilers for the sixth and final season premiere of “Empire”)
The sixth and final season of “Empire” kicked off with a bang Tuesday — literally. In the opening scene of the Season 6 premiere, titled “What Is Love,” Lucious (Terrence Howard) was shot off-screen and left bleeding on the ground of his home, suggesting that the Lyon family patriarch might meet his end by the time the Fox hip-hop drama itself ends.
And while fans are left wondering what Lucious’ fate will be, they’re also faced with a “whodunit” mystery. But don’t worry, because “Empire” showrunner Brett Mahoney has assured us that this mystery will be solved faster than the casket case from Season 5, which lasted all the way from last season’s premiere until its finale.

When Fox renewed Empire for a sixth season, the network and production company behind the show quickly made it clear embattled star Jussie Smollett would not return...for now. "By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett's option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire," the network said in a statement. Note the key phrase of "at this time." The season five featured the casket mystery revealed—it was Kingsley (A.Z. Kelsey) not Smollett's character Jamal—leading many to question how the show will write out the character. Smollett was removed from the last two episodes of the season...

‘Empire’ Boss on Finale’s Heart-Stopping Casket Twist, Lucious-Cookie Cliffhanger and Jamal’s Future
(Warning: This post contains spoilers for tonight’s Season 5 finale of “Empire”)
Welp, we finally know who is in the casket ladies and gentleman — and we gotta say, we were floored by that twist. Wednesday’s Season 5 finale of “Empire” revealed that Kingsley (A.Z. Kelsey) was the one Lucious (Terrence Howard) has been mourning over in all those flashforwards and that is definitely not the Lyon son we thought would die.
What’s more, Andre (Trai Byers), the family member fans were set up to believe would die, survived because Lucious’ actual first-born son — whom both Lucious and fans only learned about this season — killed himself and thus, in a weird twist of fate, became the heart donor Andre needed to survive.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of tonight’s Empire Season 5 finale.
“The idea of moving forward without him is a true challenge, and no decisions have been made as of yet of how we move forward,” Empire showrunner Brett Mahoney admits of the contentious Jussie Smollett’s exit from the Fox series at the end of the just-concluded fifth season.
“We’ll work that out when reconvene the room and we come up with the creative,” the executive producer adds of the upcoming Season 6 of Fox’s hip hop drama.
Although Smollett was written out of the final two episodes of the Lee Daniels- and Danny Strong-created series following his legal troubles in Chicago, tonight’s Mahoney co-written “The Roughest Day” didn’t miss a beat in turning out to be the whirlwind ending we’ve come to expect from an Empire finale.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “The Roughest Day,” the fifth season finale of “Empire.”
It’s been quite a year for “Empire.”
The fifth season kicked off by teasing that before the end of the season someone important to Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) would die. Over the course of the 18 episodes, it was revealed that the music number-cruncher originally hell-bent on destroying the Lyons had a personal vendetta: He was actually Lucious’ first-born son.
Additionally, Lucious and Cookie’s (Taraji P. Henson) relationship continued to be strained, resulting in her getting too close to Damon Cross (Wood Harris), who had a relationship with the law enforcement agents investigating the Lyons, and Andre (Trai Byers) fell in love with someone new, was diagnosed with cancer and was later told his heart was giving out due to the cancer treatment he underwent.

There are still two more episodes left in the fifth season of “Empire,” but Wednesday’s hour was the final one in which Jussie Smollett will appear — at least for the show’s current run.
This episode of the Fox hip-hop drama, titled “Never Doubt I Love,” centered around the wedding of Jamal (Smollett) and Kai (Toby Onwumere), who have mended their fractured relationship after a rough engagement this season and finally decided to tie the knot.
The couple’s high-profile nuptials are going to be featured in the New York Times, which we find out will include mention of Kai’s HIV-positive status, after the interviewer was tipped off via an anonymous email that said the Jamal was trying to call off the wedding due to this news. However, Jamal and Kai say this isn’t true.

Lucious didn’t come to fight on tonight’s “Empire” — but he will.
In TheWrap’s exclusive clip from Wednesday’s episode of the Fox hip-hop drama, Lucious (Terrence Howard) comes to visit his baby mama Tracy (played by guest star Amanda Detmer) to have a frank discussion about their son, Jeff Kingsley (A.Z. Kelsey), whom he only recently learned about.
Lucious does not understand how Tracy could be so mad about him abandoning Kingsley as a child, when she never even gave him a chance to know he had a fourth son. You know, in addition to Andre (Trai Byers), Jamal (Jussie Smollett), and Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) — the legitimate Lyon boys Lucious has with his wife Cookie (Taraji P. Henson).
The conversation doesn’t go as cordially as Lucious had hoped it would, but he’s not ready to back down and take responsibility for bailing on Kingsley.

“Empire” returned with a whole mess of drama Wednesday. And no, we’re not even talking about Jussie Smollett’s real-life legal situation.
Episode 510, titled “My Fault is Past,” was the first new installment to air since the midseason finale on Dec. 5.
That also makes it the first new episode since Smollett reported being attack by two men in Chicago on Jan. 29, was charged with filing a false police report for that same incident on Feb. 21, and then indicted on 16 felony counts by a grand jury last week. He is set to appear in court tomorrow.
But setting aside all of that stuff going on with Smollett, for those of you wondering, here’s what his on-screen alter ego, Jamal — the openly gay son of Lucious (Terrence Howard) and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) — was doing on “Empire” tonight.

“Empire” returns to Fox Wednesday for its Season 5 midseason premiere — the first new episode since Jussie Smollett was arrested and charged with filing a false police report.
As a matter of fact, Wednesday will mark the first new episode of the hip-hop soap since well before Smollett — who plays the openly-gay Jamal Lyon — told Chicago cops he was assaulted on Jan. 29.
The last original “Empire” aired on Dec. 5, which ended with Jeff Kingsley (A.Z. Kelsey) telling Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), Andre (Trai Byers), Hakeem (Bryshere Y.
Gray) and Jamal that he is Lucious’ (Terrence Howard) son and a flash-forward showing Andre flatlining in front of his parents, giving fans more fuel for their theories about who is in that casket in all those other flash-forward scenes we’ve seen this season.

“Empire” returns from its fifth season’s winter hiatus tomorrow night with an episode that includes the recently-indicted Jussie Smollett.
But you might not know that if you were to look at the promo photos from the midseason premiere episode, which Fox recently posted to its press site, ’cause Jamal (Smollett) isn’t in a single one of them. And the hip-hop soap opera’s third lead is not in the shots for the following two episodes either.
Smollett — who plays the openly gay middle son of Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious (Terrence Howard) — is absent from all 38 production stills that are currently available to media from Episode 510, 511, and 512.
However, the other regular cast members, including Howard, Henson, Bryshere Y. Gray, Trai Byers, Nicole Ari Parker, Gabourey Sidibe and even Season 5 newcomer A.Z. Kelsey, are all present and accounted for to some degree in the photos.

Welcome back to the Lyons’ den. Fox has set the midseason return date for the fifth season of “Empire” and released a promo for the upcoming batch of episodes, which shows Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious (Terrence Howard) going to war with Jeff Kingsley (A.Z. Kelsey) — who we all now know to be Lucious’ fourth son.
And when we say all we do mean all, after that very awkward family meeting in front of everyone at the end of the winter finale, in which Kingsley revealed the paternity news to Cookie, Andre (Trai Byers), Jamal (Jussie Smollett), and Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) in front of a giant crowd at Lyon Family Management’s big event.
In the 45-second teaser, we see things will pick up pretty much right where they left off, with Cookie and Lucious ready to take down Kingsley — as the current CEO of Empire was definitely...

Spoiler Alert: This story includes details about tonight’s Empire Season 5 midseason finale
“The question will become if the Lyons retake Empire, what will it cost them?” says showrunner Brett Mahoney of where tonight’s Season 5 midseason finale is taking the Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard led Fox drama when it returns next year.
In the former Code Black Ep’s first full season as solo showrunner on the Danny Strong and Lee Daniels created series, the endless twists, turns and betrayals of Empire were rocked tonight by the confirmation that now vengeful CEO Jeff Kingsley is in fact the son of Howard’s Lucious Lyon. If the showcase revelation of the parentage of the A.Z. Kelsey played character wasn’t Empire enough for you, plus his data selling to law enforcement, there was the midseason finale’s final minutes with eldest Lyon son Andre (Trai Byers) crashing fast...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the “Empire” Season 5 fall finale, which aired Wednesday.)
Do. Not. Tell. Us. Andre. Is. In. That. Casket. ‘Cause that’s definitely what Wednesday’s episode of “Empire” — the Fox drama’s Season 5 fall finale — implied.
In the closing moments of the episode, titled “Had It From My Father,” a flash-forward showed us Andre (Trai Byers) being rushed into the ER, with Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious (Terrence Howard) looking on in horror as their eldest son flatlined.
That cliffhanger has us strongly assuming Andre is the person inside the coffin that Lucious has been mourning over in all those cuts to the future we’ve been seeing since the season premiere.

The dawn of Saul Goodman is upon us (or so it seems) in the first full-length trailer for Better Caul Saul Season 4.
AMC’s prequel series picks back up in the aftermath of Chuck’s devastating suicide. The above footage features Jimmy in attendance at his brother’s funeral, then later attempting to stay gainfully employed as he rides out his year-long probation from practicing law. We also see Jimmy looking through a closet full of suits (at the 00:40 mark) that look an awful lot like the threads worn by his Breaking Bad alter ego.
Mike and Nacho, meanwhile,...
