Two good friends played against each other at the US Open , with Daniil Medvedev emerging victorious in three sets over Andrey Rublev .
This was a bizarre match in many ways. We saw plenty of things in this match but didn't see what we thought we did. We saw no rants from either player, well, kind of. Rublev did rant to umpire James Keothavong in the first set.
In any case, Rublev jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't hold it. The Russian looked locked in against a somewhat loose Medvedev. Did it matter? Not really, as Medvedev turned things around in typical Medvedev fashion.
He even won the opening set 6-4 as Rublev faded away without doing anything particularly wrong. He just wasn't sharp enough in the crucial rallies. Both players greatly struggled with the hot and humid conditions, with Medvedev, who joked about watching matches on pirate websites...

Alexander Zverev slammed a fan for using the 'most famous Hitler phrase there is in the world' during his late-night marathon win over Jannik Sinner and forcing him out of the stadium.
Zverev and his Italian opponent played out the longest match of the 2023 US Open , lasting the full five sets, and which clocked nearly five hours of intense and physically draining tennis. It was 26-year-old Zverev who outlasted 22-year-old Sinner in a battle of endurance 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 4-6, 6-3 to advance into the quarterfinals against Carlos Alcaraz .
But midway through that match, Zverev stopped play and requested the chair umpire James Keothavong to ask an obnoxious fan to leave the stadium. That was because Zverev complained that the fan had uttered some unpleasant words directed at him.
It was the fifth game of the fourth set, and the chair umpire had to wait until the changeover to ask security personnel to intervene.

On Monday, Sakkari returned to the scene where she tore through the 2021 US Open wom’n’s draw, riding on a high of a breakthrough season that saw her crack the Top 10 for the first time in her career, determined to change the narrative. She opened her 2022 campaign with an emphatic 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win over Tatjana Maria of Germany.
Early on, a knee-high volley from midcourt caught Rakhimova by surprise and the stance and execution on return was particularly aggressive. Sprinkle in winners off each wing and 10 successive points, and it all enabled the Frenchwoman to surge 4-0 in front.
