It's hard to believe, but 2024 marks 40 years since the story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began on the page. Idw plans to celebrate the anniversary with a new line of comic books, including a relaunch of the main series from Avengers and Thor writer Jason Aaron.
In the series, the prolific comic book writer plans to take the Heroes in a Half-Shell back to their gritty roots, bringing them back in line with the original black-and-white stories from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' first four issues will feature a revolving door of artists with Joëlle Jones (Catwoman) kicking things off in a Raphael-focused first issue. The second instalment shifts the spotlight to Michelangelo with art by Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire).
Then, in issue #3, Paper Girls co-creator Cliff Chiang will put his spin on Leonardo before Donatello takes centre stage in the Chris Burnham-illustrated (Batman Incorporated) fourth chapter.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began their lives in comic book form 40 years ago before going on to become a media and merchandizing brand and are currently enjoying a massive revival in the sequential art format. In fact, the top selling graphic novel in North America for two years in a row has been Tmnt: The Last Ronin, the collected trade paperback of the acclaimed mini-series from the early 2020s.
Idw, the company which holds the Tmnt license, is capitalizing on the half-shell heat but launching a new ongoing series, one that will return the series to its gritty and action-packed roots seen in the original black and white indie comics from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

DC Comics "Catwoman: Lonely City" is a new hardcover collection, originally released as a four-issue limited series October 2021, written and illustrated by Cliff Chiang for DC's 'Black Label', available December 20, 2022:
"...ten years ago, 'Fools' Night' claimed the lives of 'Batman', the 'Joker', 'Nightwing' and 'Commissioner Gordon', sending 'Selina Kyle', the 'Catwoman', to prison.
"A decade later, 'Gotham' has grown up—it's put away costumed heroism and villainy as childish things. The new Gotham is cleaner, safer…and a lot less free, under the watchful eye of 'Mayor Harvey Dent' and his 'Batcops'.
"And it's into this new city that Selina Kyle returns, a changed woman…with her mind on that one last big score: the secrets hidden inside the 'Batcave'! She doesn't need the money—she just needs to know…who is 'Orpheus'...?"

About a year ago, comic book author James Tynion IV was on a long drive back to New York City from a friend’s engagement upstate when he got an email from French artist Elsa Charretier asking him if he’d be interested in writing the script for a short film she and longtime partner Pierrick Colinet were making.
The reaction from Tynion, the best-selling creator who has several comics on the go such as Something Is Killing the Children and Department of Truth as well as a Substack comic newsletter, was an almost immediate no. “I’m working on a million things, I don’t have time for this,” Tynion thought.
“By the time I got back to the city, I got an idea in my head, and I was like, ‘Yes, I want to do this,’” Tynion recalled in a Zoom conversation with The Hollywood Reporter.

Amazon Prime Video has canceled “Paper Girls” after one season.
The series was produced by Amazon Studios and Legendary Television in association with Plan B. It is based on the graphic novel series of the same name written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Cliff Chiang and published by Image Comics.
“Paper Girls” begins in the early morning hours after Halloween 1988, when four newspaper delivery girls — Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), Mac (Sofia Rosinsky), Tiffany (Camryn Jones), and Kj (Fina Strazza) — are out on their route when they become caught in the crossfire between warring time-travelers, changing the course of their lives forever. Transported into the future, they must figure out a way to get back home to the past, a journey that will bring them face-to-face with the grown-up versions of themselves. While reconciling that their futures are far different than their 12-year-old selves imagined, they are being hunted by...

Paper Girls is no more. Amazon’s adaptation of the best-selling graphic novels written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang may have received positive reviews, but reviews aren’t everything. Deadline has reported that Paper Girls has been cancelled after just one season on Prime Video.
The coming-of-age sci-fi series kicks off in the early morning of the day after Halloween in 1988 and follows four young women who find themselves transported to the future where they encounter grown-up versions of themselves. Despite the cancellation, Paper Girls may not be totally dead. Sources told Deadline that Legendary TV plans on shopping the series around. The series dropped on Prime Video last month, but some feel that it never got a fair shake as Amazon was in the midst of a massive marketing campaign for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Paper Girls won’t be heading back out on its current route.
Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service has canceled the series, based on a comic by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, after a single season. The decision comes six weeks after the eight-episode season debuted in its entirety.
The show received positive reviews from critics and solid audience scores on review aggregators, but it did not break out with viewers, based on what little data is available. Paper Girls didn’t make Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming rankings for any of the three weeks after its July 29 premiere.
More to come.

In the season finale, now streaming on Prime Video, we see Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), Mac (Sofia Rosinsky), Tiff (Camryn Jones) and Kj (Fina Strazza) set to be returned to their original timeline, with their memories erased. But, thanks to some help from Prioress (Adina Porter), they manage to flee from the Grandfather (Jason Mantzoukas) in escape pods.

Like Damon Lindelof’s take on Watchmen before it, Paper Girls takes a beloved comic work and expands its possibilities for the small screen. Streaming now on Amazon Prime Video, the eight-episode debut season captures the heart, fun, and general sci-fi mindfuckery of the source material. More than that though, it doubles down on the saga’s core humanity by taking time to explore the rich inner lives of Mac, Kj, Tiffany, and Erin as they are thrown into a decades-spanning adventure that puts them in conflict with everything from their future selves to the realities of their mortality.
Part of the reason this adaptation is so successful is that Paper Girls‘ comic creators Brian K. Vaughan (who wrote all 30 issues) and Cliff Chiang (who illustrated them) serve as executive producers on the series. Their involvement both legitimizes and endorses the show, which ambitiously...

Based on the comic book series by Brian K Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, Prime Video’s “Paper Girls” tells a new sci-fi story that calls back to the likes of “E.T.” and “Stranger Things.” Amidst a great throwback soundtrack and lots of 80s and 90s memorabilia, a group of four young girls stumble upon two warring factions trying to control time travel.
Erin, Mac, Kj and Tiff meet on “Hell Day,” November 1, 1988 in the early hours after Halloween. The four of them have taken the job of the paper route for the Cleveland Preserver in their small town of Stony Stream, Ohio. Tiff has just bought two walkie talkies, so after some teenage boys mess with Kj, the foursome decides to split up into pairs to complete their route safely, but two mysterious men steal the walkie talkies and plunge them into a time jump all the way forward to the year 2019.

Amazon’s Paper Girls features time travel, a burgeoning interdimensional conflict and giant robots straight out of Pacific Rim. It’s certain to earn everybody’s lazy comparisons to Stranger Things, though it feels essential to mention that Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s Image Comics series predates Netflix’s exercise in ’80s teen nostalgia.
You can’t describe Paper Girls without talking about its science fiction spine. That, however, is not the thing. It’s the thing that gets you to the thing.

Let’s get this out of the way now: The comparisons “Paper Girls” will get to “Stranger Things” are inevitable, but not especially fair.
Yes, “Paper Girls” also opens in the 1980s with four 12-year-olds on bikes who end up tackling otherworldly forces way bigger than themselves. But by the middle of the first episode, “Paper Girls” — which was a comic book series before “Stranger Things” was a TV show, anyway — turns itself inside out to become something else entirely. Suddenly, what at first looked like yet another throwback Amblin-esque series reveals a more bittersweet lens, and harder science fiction heart.
As written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang (both executive producers on this show), the original “Paper Girls” comics developed a devoted fanbase thanks to its sharp characterization, unsparing twists, and Chiang’s angular imagery rendered in fluorescent pinks and blues by colorist Matt Wilson. The main thing working against Paper Girls — Amazon’s mostly excellent TV adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s multiple Eisner-winning Image Comics series — is Stranger Things. Seeing how both chronicle the adventures of 1980s pre-teens who are unwittingly thrust into supernatural conflicts in which the fate of humanity is at stake, some comparisons are bound to arise. This, combined with the fact that Stranger Things is the hugest thing in genre television in recent memory, means that the negative/most vocal aspects of fandom are right now sharpening their Demogorgon-esque claws to dismiss Paper Girls as a derivative rip-off of the blockbuster series.
Not only would this be wrong but wholly inaccurate, as Paper Girls (the comic of which actually pre-dates the Netflix juggernaut by a year) is its own original entity that shares only the most surface and fleeting...

The first thing “Paper Girls” has to do is distinguish itself from “Stranger Things.” This task isn’t especially fair; this Amazon Prime Video series about a quartet of 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls in 1988 who accidentally travel through time is based on a comic book by Brian K. Vaughn and Cliff Chiang that was first published mere months after “Stranger Things” premiered. But it’s unavoidable all the same, especially in a summer when the newest “Stranger Things” season debuted to blockbuster-level attention on Netflix. Is Amazon’s “Paper Girls” perfect for fans of that show, or does it play (however inadvertently) as a cheap imitation?
The answer is a little of both: As a sci-fi adventure, “Paper Girls” is mostly lacking, hampered by chintzy-looking special effects and chaotic, unconvincing world-building. As an unusual coming-of-age drama, though, it has its moments—including some material that digs deeper than the big-budget ’80s karaoke of Stranger Things.

People say never to meet your heroes, but what if your hero is yourself? This is the thought exercise that reverberates across time in "Paper Girls," a tremendously heartfelt and funny sci-fi series premiering on Prime Video today. A character-driven series headlined by four talented young leads, "Paper Girls" is the rare comic book adaptation that both honors and improves upon the source material.
The show is written by created and written by Stephany Folsom ("Toy Story 4"), based on Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang's now-complete Image Comics series that began in 2015. It begins in 1988, when four newspaper girls...

If adaptations of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic books didn’t have terrible luck with timing, they’d have no luck at all.
Vaughan has co-created some of the most acclaimed, beloved comics of this century, but they have tended to involve such elaborate concepts and dense storytelling that they’ve taken an incredibly long time to journey from page to screen. As a result, they’ve arrived in other media at the worst possible moments. Runaways, about the rebellious teenage children of a group of supervillains, debuted on Hulu...

Comic book adaptations are so commonplace these days it almost feels like a forgone conclusion that any popular comic book will eventually get turned into a movie or TV show. It's not all superheroes, though, and, in many cases, that's where the best stuff lies. Such is the case with the acclaimed "Paper Girls," which comes from writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang. Now, it's becoming a show on Amazon Prime Video, and the creators were on hand at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 to pull the curtain back just ahead of the series debut. Paper routes feel like something from a bygone era, when the news wasn't delivered to us via our unhealthy obsession with our phones, but by some local kids who wanted to make a few bucks. It's a part of Americana that feels almost forgotten even as we relish the resurgence of the Amblin "kids on bikes" sub-genre through shows like "Stranger Things" or the Andy Muschietti "It" movies. Thankfully, "Paper Girls," the new Prime Video series based on the comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, will provide a little nostalgia for every kid who ever had a paper route. Then again, these paper girls...
