Director Mike Barker unveils Luckiest Girl Alive, based on the book of the same name by Jessica Knoll. In the film, Mila Kunis stars as magazine editor TifAni FaNelli and is set to marry her fiance, Luke Harrison. FaNelli, however, is left to deal with the trauma of being a survivor of a school shooting and a previous gang rape by her previous friends Liam and Dean, with the former being killed and the latter being paralyzed during the school shooting. There might be some improvement needed on its execution but it still has a slappy dose of entertainment coming from Kunis' charismatic and magnetic performance. Maybe we should start with the positives. The film's accomplishments squarely lie in Kunis and her independent attitude. Her...

Female filmmakers are taking abortion protections into their own hands following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, said panelists during the “Navigating Hollywood in a Post-Roe v. Wade World” event presented by Loeb & Loeb at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit.
Sarah Treem, co-creator and showrunner of “The Affair,” is one of nearly 1500 members of the Showrunners Coalition that demanded Hollywood take action in support of those working on productions in “abortion-hostile states.”
The Showrunners Coalition received an “astonishing and unprecedented” response from fellow creatives, she told moderator Ivy Kagan Bierman, Chair of Entertainment Labor at Loeb & Loeb. The studios, not so much.
“The ability for travel reimbursement [is] really what people are talking about, in terms of the things that the companies came out with right away. Sure, that’s great to be reimbursed if you’ve traveled to have an abortion, but really, it’s kind...

“Halloween Ends” had a healthy — albeit slightly underwhelming — box office performance in its debut weekend, but the 13th film in the popular horror franchise looks to have made up for it with a strong debut on Peacock, according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker — which reflects data from TV time, a TV and movie app that tracks viewer interest from 22 million global registered users.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Luckiest Girl Alive,” now streaming on Netflix.
In 2015, Jessica Knoll’s “Luckiest Girl Alive” was the book in everyone’s bag. It spent 17 consecutive weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list. Before Hello Sunshine — or Reese Witherspoon’s book club — even existed, Witherspoon signed on to produce a film adaptation.
It took seven years, but ultimately, the movie landed at Netflix. First set to have a theatrical release, the Mike Barker-directed movie, written by Knoll, took off the moment it dropped. Currently, it’s in its second week in the No. 1 slot on the streaming service: 57 million hours of the movie have been watched this week alone.
Still, the release hasn’t been without a bit of backlash on social media. The story follows Ani FaNelli — played by Mila Kunis as an adult, and Chiara Aurelia as a teenager — when...

Netflix Originals are often hit-or-miss. While they did churn out movies and TV shows that became iconic (and deservedly so), the company also had its fair share of meh to downright-bad adaptations. Their latest mystery film, Luckiest Girl Alive, is, fortunately, not one of the latter. Luckiest Girl Alive is a novel by American author Jessica Knoll. Published in 2015, it wasn’t long before her debut work became a New York Times Bestseller. Chiara Aurelia’s initial reaction to reading the script for the R-rated “Luckiest Girl Alive” film adaptation of the novel by Jessica Knoll was one of terror. But that drew her even closer to the material.
“The first time that I read the script, my initial reaction was ‘Wow, this is terrifying,’ and thinking that the role was such a challenge and that it would really stretch me as a person,” she told TheWrap in a recent interview alongside co-star Mila Kunis, who plays an older version of Aurelia’s character. “That immediately gravitated me towards it. And also I think I really look for — actresses like Mila have seriously paved the way for me at my age (at which co-star Kunis chuckled) — I’m saying even in the last 10 years, it’s changed so much to where there’s so many more multi-dimensional female characters.”
For Kunis, Knoll’s writing captivated her.

That was because of the way I was treated in the aftermath of my assault when I was in high school,” Knoll said. “I was blamed and shamed and really silenced. I said a couple of times to a doctor, to one of the guys who assaulted me, ‘I was raped. You raped me.’ People were like, ‘No, it’s just too complicated. That’s not what happened.

A year after releasing her New York Times bestselling 2015 novel, "Luckiest Girl Alive," author Jessica Knoll was ready to share a different yet tragically similar story: her own. In "Luckiest Girl Alive," protagonist Ani has orchestrated a new life for herself as a glamorous magazine editor. Her shiny facade hides a challenging past, though: Ani - formerly known as TiffAni - had survived a vicious rape in high school and, later, a school shooting orchestrated by a friend. A powerful 2016 Lenny essay revealed that Ani's journey wasn't so dissimilar to her creator's. Knoll, too, had been the victim of a gang rape as a teen. She detailed the traumatic assault - and heart-wrenching and disappointing response from those positioned to help - in her Lenny piece.

Many viewers ofLuckiest Girl Alive, which is currently number one on Netflix’s Top 10, have been wondering whether the Mila Kunis-starrer is based on a true story.
The film follows Kunis’s Ani, a writer whose seemingly perfect life starts to unravel when a true-crime documentary forces her to confront a school shooting she experienced as a teenager.
Luckiest Girl Alive contains harrowing scenes, with many viewers calling for stronger trigger warnings, but is it based on real life events?
***This article contains spoilers for Luckiest Girl Alive***
The answer is not straightforward. The film is technically based on a 2015 mystery novel of the same name by Jessica Knoll. In that book, a teenage Ani is gang raped at a house party by several of her classmates. She tells her friends Arthur and Ben what happened, and they then share their experiences of being bullied by the same boys who raped Ani.

Mila Kunis is explaining the “logical” approach she took to understand her complicated character in her new film, “Luckiest Girl Alive”. Et’s Nischelle Turner spoke with Kunis before the thriller hit Netflix on Friday, where she shared how she “reverse engineered” the role before letting the emotions of the film take over.
“I mean, I don’t know if I’m gonna sound like a sociopath, but it wasn’t that hard,” Kunis said of portraying some of the film’s more difficult moments onscreen. “I have a very healthy relationship when it comes to acting. I don’t live and breathe it when I come home. I’ve always said this: who I am and what I do are two very different things.”
“Understanding the why of the character is always the easiest way in,” she continued. “And I guess I reverse engineered it, so, I went like,...

Being featured on the Netflix top 10 used to mean something.
It was a useful list that audiences could look to for recommendations. These were films you could trust to be good.
Needless to say, a lot has changed since then. Now, more often than not, reaching number one on Netflix isn’t necessarily something to be proud of.
As the hate-watching phenomenon continues to grow – in which viewers will binge watch something they admit is terrible – popularity on Netflix becomes less and less synonymous with quality.
We’ve rounded up a list of eight films that did spectacularly well for the streaming giant... but bombed with audiences, according to their Rotten Tomato ratings.

Netflix users are issuing warnings for those planning to watch Luckiest Girl Alive.
The new film, which is based on the 2015 novel by Jessica Knoll, follows Mila Kunis’ lead character who is faced with a past trauma related to a horrifying high school shooting.
Those who have watched the 15-certificate film since its release on Friday (7 October) are alerting their Twitter followers to the fact that the film features “harrowing” scenes many might find triggering.
Netflix briefly mentions that Luckiest Girl Alive features “sexual violence” and “threat” at the top of the screen when the film starts – but many users believe this is not enough, and are saying it should be made clearer that the film features “intense scenes of sexual assault”.
“Netflix really dropped the ball on not adding a giant trigger warning for Luckiest Girl Alive,” one viewer wrote.
Another subscriber added: “Heads up to anyone who wants...

Loving books by and about women has created an extraordinary career for producer Bruna Papandrea, one that includes “Wild,” “Gone Girl,” the Emmy-winning “Big Little Lies,” “The Nightingale,” “The Dry,” “The Undoing,” and “Roar.” Her production company, Made Up Stories, just opened a UK outpost run by Sarah Harvey, which joins offices in Los Angeles and Sydney, in her native Australia.
What none of those offices have, she told IndieWire, are book scouts. Had she used scouts, she said, “I probably would’ve missed ‘Wild’ because [the report] would’ve said, ‘a woman hikes 1,200 miles after the death of the mother’ and I don’t think I would’ve read it.”
Papandrea’s latest production is the long-gestating “Luckiest Girl Alive,” the Netflix adaptation of Jessica Knoll’s bestselling novel of the same name. It stars Mila Kunis as the eponymous “girl,” now the adult survivor of a high school shooting who...

A hollow adaptation of Jessica Knoll’s 2015 novel centers on a woman whose perfect life is corroded by past trauma
The book cover for Luckiest Girl Alive, Jessica Knoll’s bestselling 2015 debut novel about a woman’s seemingly perfect life corroded by past trauma, features large, blaring font over a cheap-looking black rose – a symbol of rebirth rendered tacky, a bit emo. It’s of the time for a mid-2010s literary hit, but also seems to anticipate the 2022 Netflix adaptation, which wrings the novel of its caustic wit and serrated observations of New York careerists into a hollow, unearned empowerment anthem.
The film version, directed by Mike Barker from a screenplay by Knoll, suffers from a similar problem to this summer’s Where the Crawdads Sing, another adaptation of a literary smash about a jagged female protagonist tapped by Reese Witherspoon. Both films inherit and reify the flaws of its source material.

The irony of “Luckiest Girl Alive” isn’t just reserved for the title: Isn’t it ironic how those who brutalize others are the ones who never seem to feel pain? In the vein of viral ’90s-set series “Yellowjackets” and “Cruel Summer,” “Luckiest Girl Alive” relies on flashbacks to frame the tentacles of trauma more than two decades later.
Mila Kunis stars as women’s magazine editor Ani FaNelli, who seems to have the perfect Manhattan life in the perfect apartment with the perfect fiancé (Finn Wittrock). That is, until a true crime documentarian approaches Ani to find out what really happened at her prestigious high school all those years ago that lead up to the deadliest private school shooting in American history. “Luckiest Girl Alive” is based on Jessica Knoll’s bestselling 2015 novel of the same name, and Knoll adapted the screenplay herself, with “Handmaid’s Tale” director Mike Barker helming the film.

Mirrors reflect who we are, or at least how we want to appear to others. Director Mike Barker’s “Luckiest Girl Alive” uses them as a motif throughout this tale centered on a woman whose pristine, calculated image disguises a mess of insecurities and intense psychological pain. Yet the picture portrayed in author Jessica Knoll’s adaptation of her own novel struggles with its tone, poor character construction and annoying screenwriting contrivances. Utilizing a traditionally glossy, chick-lit-retrofitted heroine as a mouthpiece for somber, serious activist sentiments isn’t so much provocative as just downright batty.
Ani (Mila Kunis) seemingly has it all: She’s sharp-witted, gorgeous, holds a coveted position at a Cosmopolitan-like magazine and shares a palatial apartment in New York City with her loving, upper-crust fiancé Luke (Finn Wittrock). She’s even earned her demanding boss Lolo’s (Jennifer Beals) adoration. But she’s also secretly abrasive, judging by her acid-tinged voiceover.

The protagonist of Netflix’s Luckiest Girl Alive writes for a glossy women’s magazine, is engaged to a poster boy for summers in Nantucket and wears designer clothes tailored to her svelte form. She has discerning taste, a sharp personality and a caustic tongue.
When we meet Ani, shopping at Williams-Sonoma with her fiancé, Luke Harrison IV (Finn Wittrock), the contours of her meticulously curated existence are evident. Following along in the not-too-distant footsteps of popular women’s suspense novels such as Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, Luckiest Girl Alive tells the tony yet unsavory tale of a successful career woman who struggles to once and for all come to terms with a highly traumatic youthful episode. The emotions expressed here are nearly all negative, understandably so given the dreadful backstory that eventually comes to the fore. What’s more, the characters, most of all the leading lady, hardly represent the best of company. But what it’s ultimately getting at in the final scenes does provide some tough emotional reality and self-searching in a what-might-you-have-done-in-the-same-situation sort of way, which is at least a bit more than what other tales of this ilk provide.

“I was completely 100 percent obsessed [and] fixated on being the one to adapt it myself, even though I didn’t have any screenwriting experience. DC’s next installment, the latest “Halloween” flick, David O. Russell’s new star-studded film and another Harry Styles movie set in the 1950s are among the 10 most-anticipated movies of October.
As you might’ve guessed, “Black Adam,” the upcoming DC Comics blockbuster starring Dwayne Johnson, is the most anticipated movie of October, according to Whip Media’s U.S. Movie Anticipation Report, which reflects data from TV Time, a television and movie app that tracks viewer interest across 22 million global registered users.
“Black Adam” will see the Justice Society of America try to harness the antihero’s powers for good, rather than destruction, as he takes on an evil foe. Mila Kunis is getting candid about how she and her family handled Ashton Kutcher’s health scare. Et’s Nischelle Turner spoke with Kunis ahead of the release of her new film, “Luckiest Girl Alive”, where she spoke about her husband’s battle with a rare form of vasculitis, and how the couple “powered through” that scary time.
“So, this happened right before Covid, so this was three years ago,” Kunis said of the disease, which made headlines in August, after Kutcher opened up about the autoimmune flare-up, during an episode of “Running Wild With Bear Grylls: The Challenge”.
“I don’t think you have time to sit down and talk, you kinda just power through,” the 39-year-old actress — who shares Wyatt, 8, and Dimitri, 6, with Kutcher — continued. “You go and deal with whatever health issue comes your way, but you still got kids, you still got a family, you have to live life.

The trailer for Netflix's latest original mystery-thriller is here, and "Luckiest Girl Alive" looks like it actually could be a cut above the streamer's recent lackluster movie offerings. While Netflix adaptations like "The Woman in the Window" offered more groans than thrills, this latest page-to-screen story already appears to be a more lively take on a popular mystery novel. The new film stars Mila Kunis in "Black Swan" paranoid thriller mode, and the "That '70s Show" actor suspiciously side-eyes her way through an intriguing storyline about secrets from her adolescence that come back to haunt her right when her life finally seems to be going perfectly.

Mila Kunis is the "Luckiest Girl Alive" in Netflix's latest book-to-movie adaptation. The movie, based on New York Times bestselling author Jessica Knoll's 2015 novel of the same name, stars Kunis as Ani FaNelli, "a sharp-tongued New Yorker" living in her own perfect world - until a crime documentary that revisits her dark high school past threatens to unravel everything. Netflix released the trailer for the film on Sept. 6.
Though "Luckiest Girl Alive" is a fictional story, Knoll previously told the "Today" show that her novel - which sold over 450,000 copies - was shaped by her own experiences. In the book, Ani survives a gang rape, a similar experience the author had when she was 15 years old and assaulted by three boys at a party. "I knew it the morning that I opened my eyes. I just felt horrible and...

Ani FaNelli lives a storybook life. She’s worked her way to the top — landing an editor position at the New York Times Magazine — and found love along the way in a trust fund baby named Luke. But the more she paved her way toward a future most people only dream of, the more dirt she tossed behind her, hoping to keep her past sufficiently buried. In the trailer for Netflix’s Luckiest Girl Alive, FaNelli (Mila Kunis) discovers that lavish weddings and glossy new jobs can only cover up so many old wounds.
