The 2000 film Ginger Snaps (watch it Here) is my all-time favorite werewolf movie. That was followed by a sequel – Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed – and a very unexpected prequel – Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning – and while I’m not as enamored with them as I am with the original movie, I do get some enjoyment out of watching them. The oddball prequel especially. If you’re a fan of Ginger Snaps trilogy as well and happen to have a Region B (or region free) Blu-ray player, you’ll be glad to hear that Second Sight Films is packaging all three movies together in a limited edition UK box set that’s going to be released on October 30th. Just in time for Halloween, which happens to be the setting of the first movie.
Copies of the Ginger Snaps trilogy Blu-ray box set can be pre-ordered directly from Second Sight Films.

Hello, everyone! August 23rd is a quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases, but that doesn’t mean that this week’s offerings aren’t pretty darn great all the same. Scream Factory has put together a killer Collector’s Edition 4K release for Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers and Kino Lorber has put together reissues of their Blu-ray box sets for seasons one and two of The Outer Limits, which genre fans will definitely want to pick up.
Cheers!

Yann Gonzalez’s Knife+Heart arrives at a time when contemporary genre cinema is reckoning with itself. In the last ten years, a number of filmmakers, particularly in Francophone Europe, has produced and directed relatively high-profile films occupying a genre that has come to be known as neo-giallo. A definition for neo-giallo borders on impossible, save perhaps a film that retroactively occupies the European thriller genre of giallo, which peaked in popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and in doing so becomes a film made self-consciously, with an awareness of the genre’s conventions and thus a postmodern relationship to the material. At first glance, Gonzalez’s film certainly qualifies as such, extrapolating certain elements of giallo to an extent where it almost becomes necessary to understand the pedigree that haunts the genre as a whole. The film is not by necessity a deconstruction, but rather an earnest...
