Ben Stokes reverses Odi retirement ahead of World Cup, named in England squad for New Zealand series
London, Aug 16 (Ians) England on Wednesday received a huge boost ahead of the Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 as their Test captain Ben Stokes reversed his decision to retire from 50-over format and will return to Odi setup in the upcoming four-match series against New Zealand.
England selector Luke Wright confirmed that the 15 players named for New Zealand ODIs are also part of the provisional squad for the World Cup, where their campaign will get underway against New Zealand, in a rematch of the epic 2019 final at Lord’s.
“It wasn’t really a case of changing his mind. He was always interested in coming back. He had to make that priority of getting through the Ashes, have a break and give the body a rest. It wasn’t a case of needing to beg him or anything like that, he was always keen, so it was actually fairly straightforward.

The last time these two teams met in the competition, Lucknow successfully chased down 213 on the last ball of a high-scoring match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 10.
After winning the toss, du Plessis said Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood comes in for David Willey, who is now out of the competition due to injury and uncapped India wicketkeeper-batter Anuj Rawat replaces Shahbaz Ahmed in the playing eleven.
“There will be little more turn in the second innings, I feel. I feel much better now. Our squad is well-suited for these conditions. It is just about batting well tonight,...

Bengaluru, April 23 (Ians) Rajasthan Royals (Rr) won the toss and opted to bowl first against Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) in an Ipl 2023 match at M.A Chinnaswamy Stadium, here on Sunday.
While Rr stuck to the same playing XI, Rcb made one change as David Willey came in for Wayne Parnell.
“Looking at the conditions, our side and their side. So we’d prefer bowling. The dressing room is simple, honest and we need to respect the way we are playing. We are starting with the same XI, might add someone later on,” Rr skipper Sanju Samson said at the toss.
On the other hand, Rcb stand-in captain Virat Kohli said the regular skipper Faf du Plessis continues to play as an impact substitute.

Mohali, April 20 (Ians) Sam Curran continues to captain Punjab Kings in absence of injured Shikhar Dhawan as he won the toss and elected to bowl first against a Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Is Bindra Pca Stadium on Thursday.
While Punjab enter Thursday’s match on the back of a two-wicket win coming in the last over against Lucknow Super Giants, Bangalore suffered an eight-run defeat against the Chennai Super Kings, despite fine half-centuries from Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell.
A win for Punjab will help them level with Lucknow and the Rajasthan Royals on points. After winning the toss, Curran said Liam Livingstone and Nathan Ellis come into the playing eleven, with Kagiso Rabada and Sikandar Raza, the player of the match in Punjab’s last game, being the omissions.
“We did well in the last game and we’ll take some confidence, conditions will not change a lot.

Kolkata, April 7 (Ians) In their first home game of Ipl 2023 at a packed Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders were in tatters at 89/5 in 11.3 overs. Royal Challengers Bangalore had David Willey and Karn Sharma picking up two wickets in as many balls, with many fearing an embarrassing defeat for Kkr.
But Shardul Thakur, nearly got out on his first ball, also the hat-trick ball, as the inside edge went past leg-stump, slammed the joint-fastest fifty of the season in 20 balls through his sensational 68 off 28 deliveries. That stunning turnaround set the base for Kkr to thrash Rcb by 81 runs to get their first win of the tournament.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz dazzled in the start with a stroke-filled 57 while Rinku Singh chipped in with a vital 46, apart from sharing an important 103-run partnership off just 47 balls with Thakur to propel Kkr to a mammoth 204/7.

In the match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Topley had figures of 1/14 from his two overs on Ipl debut, and even castled Cameron Green. But he suffered a right shoulder dislocation while making a diving stop in the field and left the ground immediately.

London, March 24 (Ians) English white-ball specialist Tom Abell and Australian short-format expert Tim David emerged as the top picks in the draft for the 2023 edition of The Hundred, England’s domestic limited-balls cricket league.
In the draft held on Thursday night, over 30 male players were picked across eight teams with Welsh Fire roping in Abell while David returned to Southern Brave via their Right-To-Match (Rtm) card.
With new coach Michael Hussey taking charge of affairs after a winless 2022 season, Welsh Fire strengthened their squad significantly by securing the services of Pakistan’s pace duo Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, as well as England all-rounder David Willey.
Domestic players were much in demand as top overseas stars like Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, West Indies’ Ipl legend Kieron Pollard and New Zealand’s Trent Boult went unsold, in some cases due to concerns over their availability for the full season.

New Delhi, Nov 12 (Ians) Australia’s left-arm fast bowler Jason Behrendorff has been traded from Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) to Mumbai Indians (Mi) ahead of Ipl season 2023. He was acquired by Rcb in the 2022 Ipl Auction for his base price of Inr 75 lakh but did not feature in a single game throughout the competition.

Melbourne, Nov 12 (Ians) After a topsy-turvy time in the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, the final of the tournament has arrived. If the unpredictable weather of Melbourne permits a full match, then fans are in store for a blazing final between a confident England and solid Pakistan on Sunday, which is ironically a repeat of the settings of the 1992 Odi World Cup final clash.
With both teams on their quest to win just their second T20 World Cup title, the heavy rain predicted for the final showdown on Sunday as well as on Monday, the reserve day, the trophy could be shared between the two teams. Fans will be praying to the cricketing gods to conjure up miraculous circumstances for the match to be held, even if it is a 10-overs a side affair.

Melbourne, Nov 12 (Ians) Eoin Morgan, the former England captain who led the side to the 2019 Odi World Cup at home, said he would pick David Willey over Chris Jordan to play in the final of Men’s T20 World Cup if Mark Wood is unavailable for the title clash due to general body stiffness.
Jordan had replaced an injured Wood in England’s 10-wicket win over India in the second semifinal at Adelaide Oval on Thursday. He clinched figures of 3/43 in his four overs and was praised immensely by captain Jos Buttler on bowling three of the last five overs.
But Morgan feels that the dimensions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where straight boundaries are shorter and square boundaries are longer than Adelaide Oval, may not suit Jordan and that left-arm pacer Willey could come into the side to pick early wickets.

Adelaide, Nov 10 (Ians) Hours before they step into the Adelaide Oval here for a semifinal clash against a strong Indian side in the Men’s T20 World Cup, England suffered a setback with pacer Mark Wood unable to recover from an injury and set to miss the match on Thursday.

T20 World Cup: Trying to give Malan, Wood as much time as possible to be fit for semis, says Buttler
Adelaide, Nov 9 (Ians) Ahead of their semifinal against India in the Men’s T20 World Cup, England skipper Jos Buttler gave an update on the availability of Dawid Malan and Mark Wood, saying that the side is trying to give the duo as much time as possible to be declared fit for the high-octane clash at Adelaide Oval on Thursday.
Left-handed batter Malan limped off the field in the 15th over after pulling up as he chased a ball to the boundary in England’s last Group 1 match against Sri Lanka at Sydney. He was padded up to bat as England suffered a wobble in the latter part of their chase, but was eventually not needed as the total was successfully chased down to book their semifinal spot.

Karachi, Sep 26 (Ians) Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan made 88 while Haris Rauf had an exceptional time in the death overs as Pakistan sealed a dramatic three-run win over England in the fourth T20I at the National Stadium to level the seven-match series 2-2.
After Rizwan’s 88 off 67 balls, laced with nine fours and a six, helped Pakistan post 166/5, a total which looked below-par at half-way stage of the match, England’s left-arm spin all-rounder Liam Dawson had put England on the doorstep of victory.
Dawson’s 34 off just 17 balls, including five successive boundaries in the 18th over against Mohammad Hasnain, left the visitors needing five runs to win off the last 10 balls, with three wickets in hand.
But Rauf brought Pakistan back into the match as Dawson gave a top-edge on pulling a fiery short ball and ended up holing out to mid-wicket.

London, Sep 2 (Ians) The England and Wales Cricket Board (Ecb) have included Phil Salt in their squad for the Icc T20 World Cup in Australia later this year with Jason Roy missing from the 15-member group following an unimpressive run for the national side and in The Hundred.
The prolonged lean run of Roy, which has seen him score just 206 runs at 18.72 in the 11 T20Is he’s played since the previous edition of the Icc T20 World Cup in the UAE last year, is being attributed as the reason for Salt’s inclusion. Salt had made his T20I debut earlier this year.
Salt has been rewarded for his strong domestic form in the ongoing The Hundred tournament, where he is among the top run-getters. He is at No.2 with 313 runs in eight games, averaging 44.71.

Melbourne, Aug 30 (Ians) Former Australia skipper Steve Smith has reportedly made his displeasure known that he is not happy with the Big Bash League (Bbl) deal offered to him by Sydney Sixers for the upcoming season in December-January.
The Bbl recently conducted the overseas players’ draft, with several cricketers getting multi-million dollar contracts. Cricket Australia (CA) too has made an exception for veteran Australia opener David Warner in a bid to draw crowds back to the domestic T20 league by giving him a multi-million dollar contract on par with the top overseas players.
However, only a chosen few domestic players getting the lucrative bargain has not gone down well with several top homebred players.
“In terms of tournaments around the world, you have to look after your local players most importantly,” Smith was quoted as saying by The Age in Townsville ahead of the second One-day International against Zimbabwe on Wednesday.
