In a village in the Indian state of Jharkhand, Ranjit and his wife Jiganti keep vigil at night over their home, a simple dwelling with packed-earth floors. If they don’t, anything could happen: Their neighbors have threatened to kill the couple and their children.
Ranjit and Jiganti have done nothing to warrant such terror, other than to go against village customs. After their 13-year-old daughter Kiran was sexually assaulted by three local youths, they resisted intense pressure to remain silent — to excuse the crime and the perpetrators. Instead, they demanded justice.
Their struggle plays out in the documentary To Kill a Tiger, directed by Nisha Pahuja and executive produced by a prominent team including Dev Patel, Mindy Kaling, poet Rupi Kaur, and Dr. Atul Gawande, the surgeon and bestselling author. Poet Rupi Kaur Rejects Invitation To White House Diwali Celebration In Protest Of Support For Israel
Rupi Kaur has rejected an invitation from the White House to attend Vice President Kamala Harris’ Diwali celebration that will take place on Wednesday.
In a statement on Monday, the poet said that she denied the offer in opposition to the Biden administration’s support for Israel in their current conflict with Hamas.
“I’m surprised this administration finds it acceptable to celebrate Diwali when their support of the current atrocities against Palestinians represent the exact opposite of what this holiday means to many of us,” Kaur said on X.
“I refuse any invitation from an institution that supports the collective punishment of a trapped civilian population,” she continued.
Kaur’s followers praised her for her stance.
“Thank you for being a voice we can count on,” Brown Girl Magazine commented on her post. The publication joined Kaur in declining the invitation.

The rise of Jordan Peterson as a conservative intellectual figure had everything to do with his rhetoric. The Canadian psychologist and professor first entered the public spotlight in 2016 by denouncing students at the University of Toronto who preferred to use gender-neutral pronouns. His 2018 bestseller, 12 Rules for Life, argues for traditional values as inseparable from social order. Online, he strikes an endlessly confrontational pose — responding, for example, to a 2022 Twitter suspension for deadnaming the actor Elliot Page with the immortal pronouncement, “Up yours, woke moralists! We’ll see who cancels who.

The poet Rupi Kaur wrote in her 2017 collection The Sun and Her Flowers: representation is vital otherwise the butterfly surrounded by a group of moths unable to see itself will keep trying to become the moth This notion, this state of living, it's one that Lgbtq kids know well. "A story becomes universal when something is also personal." The Orchard has released a lovely official trailer for a documentary called Invisible Essence: The Little Prince, an examination of the literary profundity of, and a closer look at the author behind, the beloved book The Little Prince. The film presents a fascinating new look into the genius of The Little Prince, published as Le Petit Prince, as well as the life and experiences of French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who first published the book in 1943. The film features appearances by Rupi Kaur, Mark Osborne, Adam Gopnik, Stacy Schiff, Éric Emmanuel Schmitt, Olivier d’Agay, and François d’Agay. This honestly looks rather wonderful, I'm very curious to check it out. New Us trailer (+ poster) for Charles Officer's doc Invisible Essence: The Little Prince, from YouTube: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's transcendent story suggests an ethical philosophy about life and a...
