Off Ramp is never subtle. Within the first five minutes, when Trey (Jon Oswald) is released from prison and says a heartfelt goodbye to correctional officer and fellow Juggalo (devoted fan of Insane Clown Posse) Faith (Laura Cayouette), the film begins delivering its message that found family, particularly Juggalo family, is often more loving than blood family. Over the next hour and a half, the movie repeatedly emphasizes that message through plot points, voiceover, a visual motif, and the declarations of love between its central pair. The film follows Trey and his best friend Silas (Scott Turner Schofield), who is introduced caring for his non-verbal grandmother, as they set out for the annual Gathering of the Juggalos. It’s a classic road movie set up, and...

Ever since “The Idol” premiered earlier this month, there’s been much critique about its sexual material, including a scene in the premiere episode where pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) decides to flash her nipples during a photoshoot, despite the nudity rider in her contract.
In the scene, her intimacy coordinator (played by Scott Turner Schofield) immediately interrupts the shoot for her album cover and reminds the photographer (Eddy Chen) about the nudity rider, which only permits Jocelyn to show her “side-boob, under-boob and side flank.” He emphasizes that the contract has been reviewed by “the label and her people,” and that any changes require the photo session to be delayed 48 hours, even though Jocelyn took it upon herself to expose her breasts.

HBO made history in 2018 for hiring Alicia Rodis on “The Deuce,” making her the first-ever intimacy coordinator on a major U.S. production. Then, in the June 4 premiere episode of HBO’s “The Idol,” a fictional intimacy coordinator got locked in a bathroom for doing his job.
In the scene, pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) is shooting photos for her album cover when she pulls open her robe to reveal her nipples. Immediately, the mousy and neurotic intimacy coordinator on set (played by Scott Turner Schofield) interrupts to remind the photographer (Eddy Chen) that the nudity rider in Jocelyn’s contract only permits the depiction of her “side-boob, under-boob and side flank.” The contract has been reviewed by “the label and her people,” he says, so any changes made require a 48-hour delay of the photo shoot, despite that Jocelyn chose to show her breasts without being directed to.

John Logan, the Oscar-nominated writer behind “Gladiator,” “Skyfall,” “The Aviator” and more, says his biggest challenge upon making the horror movie “They/Them,” his directorial debut, had little to do with the actual filming but in the meticulous casting of its LGBTQ+ leads.
While “They/Them” is top-billed by Kevin Bacon as the head of a sinister gay conversion therapy camp, the film centers around seven different campers that each represent “different parts of the queer experience,” including nonbinary actor Theo Germaine and trans actress Quei Tann portraying two of the leads, Jordan and Alexandra, respectively. And Logan, who is neither nonbinary nor trans, says he leaned on conversations with those actors and others in creating each character and finding their authentic voice.

“They/Them,” a new Blumhouse slasher that promises a queer take on the horror genre, is set to go straight to streaming on Peacock next month. But before that, the film received a full in-person theatrical screening, as the closing night premiere of Los Angeles queer film festival Outfest.
“This is the perfect place,” Kevin Bacon, who plays the film’s chief villain Owen Whistler, told Variety on the red carpet.
“They/Them” is a slasher horror film set in a gay conversion therapy camp. “When we learned we were going to be in Outfest, let alone the closing night, we were absolutely thrilled,” Bacon said. “I don’t generally get to see my films with an audience, especially these days. When they’re made for a platform, you don’t get a chance to see how it plays. So this is really exciting.”

Bigotry is the real horror in the first teaser for “They/Them,” a new slasher film about conversion therapy starring Kevin Bacon and Theo Germaine.
Written and directed by John Logan, “They/Them” stars Bacon as Owen Whistler, the director of a conversion therapy camp dedicated to “curing” LGBTQ+ teenagers of their sexual and gender identities. When Kevin Bacon in the trailer for “They/Them” welcomes a group of queer teens to a gay conversion camp and promises them “a safe space” that will be inclusive for everyone, “safe” hardly means that you won’t be murdered.
“They/Them” is an LGBTQ+ horror thriller from writer and director John Logan and the team at Blumhouse Productions, and the title itself even has fun with some pronouns, as it’s pronounced “They Slash Them,” as in a slasher movie.
But the story actually comes from a personal place for Logan, the writer of “Skyfall,” “The Aviator” and “Gladiator” who is making his directorial debut on the film.

HBO will ring in the new year with season 2 of Euphoria.
On Tuesday, HBO revealed that the teen drama created and written by Sam Levinson is set to debut Jan. 9. Euphoria, directed by Levinson, follows Zendaya’s Rue Bennett, a drug addict fresh from rehab who’s struggling to make sense of her future. Her life changes dramatically when she meets Jules Vaughn (Schafer), a girl who recently moved to town following her parents’ divorce and like Rue is searching for where she belongs. They navigate the intense dramas of drugs, sex, identity, love and friendship in their small town. The Season 1 finale, which saw Rue and Jules part ways, was followed by two special episodes centering each of the friends.
Nearly a year after HBO aired two special Euphoria episodes, Zendaya dropped a first look at the upcoming season.
With Jules gone, the teaser sees Rue reverting back to her old habits.

A fascinating deconstruction of history, culture and identity, “No Ordinary Man” raises many crucial questions — and answers them so thoughtfully — that it moves beyond entertainment into the realm of essential text. It belongs, equally, in theaters, streaming queues and classrooms.
Filmmakers Aisling Chin-Yee and Chase Joynt begin with the story of mid-century jazz musician Billy Tipton, who seems to be an ideal candidate for a traditionally formatted biographical documentary. But their goal isn’t to tell one man’s story, even if that man was “born a woman,” to reference the exploitative approach of previous tellings of his life. Tipton’s secret was revealed after his death in 1989, when EMTs removed his clothing. No one, including four successive wives and three children, had any idea that he had been assigned female at birth.
As we see in impactful footage from breathless talk shows that refer to him as a “jazzy gender-bender,...

Following a premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Chase Joynt and Aisling Chin-yee’s acclaimed documentary No Ordinary Man is now arriving next month. The film unpacks the life of American jazz musician Billy Tipton, who passed away in 1989, when it was revealed that Tipton was assigned female at birth. Seeking to correct the misrepresentation of his life, the film features interviews with Marquise Vilsón, Scott Turner Schofield, Susan Stryker, C. Riley Snorton, Thomas Page McBee, and more. Ahead of a July 16 release, the first trailer has now arrived.
Orla Smith said earlier this year, “With No Ordinary Man, directors Chase Joynt and Aisling Chin-yee reclaim the lost history of trans jazz musician Billy Tipton. Because no moving footage of Tipton exists, in this documentary, Joynt and Chin-yee ask transmasculine actors to “audition” to play Tipton, discussing their interpretations of his life and how they’d play him.

Trans actors in prominent roles have for years been absent from major studio films, but that will change this year with the release of Columbia and Blumhouse’s “The Craft: Legacy,” which casts Latin trans actress Zoey Luna as one of its four female leads. But Luna’s inclusion didn’t happen by accident. Though director Zoe Lister-Jones wrote the character of Lourdes as trans, the character’s representation was the product of an open casting search of over 300 trans actors, as well as the participation of both GLAAD and an independent consultant who specializes in trans issues on screen, Scott Turner Schofield. Schofield, who is trans himself, worked closely with Lister-Jones and Luna on “The Craft: Legacy” but also works on HBO’s “Euphoria” hand-in-hand with creator Sam Levinson and its trans star Hunter Schafer. He’s one of a rising trend of trans professionals brought in to consult with creators and crew,...

When one of the teenage witches in “The Craft: Legacy” says that the ability to give birth shows that all women have some magic in them, trans actress Zoey Luna casually corrects her and says not all women have that power.
“Trans girls have their own magic too,” Luna’s character Lourdes says in passing. It’s a simple line and doesn’t directly fuel the narrative, but it clearly identifies Lourdes as trans and gives her a strong sense of agency, a rare example of positive trans representation in a studio film.
But “The Craft: Legacy” did more for Luna and the trans community than just show representation. Director and writer Zoe Lister-Jones, a cisgender woman, worked directly with GLAAD and an independent “trans consultant” named Scott Turner Schofield in making sure that the film’s dialogue, tropes and its on-set environment were all as inclusive as it could be,...

Transferring the energy of a one man show to the multimedia format is very hard to pull off. It’s incredibly easy to lose an audience, for any number of reasons. However, when you do it right, it can be powerful stuff, especially when something essential like the trans experience is being depicted. Scott Turner Schofield, a trans man, has achieved that with his acclaimed and long running show, which now is getting a festival run in its cinematic/multimedia form. Becoming a Man in 127 Easy Steps will be playing at Outfest in a few days (though it will only be available for 72 hours), so he hopped on the phone with me this weekend to make the case for his art. Let me tell you, kit was a compelling case, too. Below you can find my conversation with Schofield. He’s an engaging person to talk to, one who can...

Jk Rowling took another tossing on Twitter Sunday as she Tweeted that “many health professionals are concerned that young people struggling with their mental health are being shunted towards hormones and surgery when this may not be in their best interests.”
The comment was one of a string as she defended herself after being called out for ‘liking’ a Tweet that compared hormone prescriptions to anti-drepressants, which were overprescribed to teenagers in the past with sometimes harmful results. Using immersive storytelling to tackle issues such as mental health, trans identity and end-of-life care featured heavily in the pitches in this year’s Digital Experience category at Annecy.
Aimed at showcasing the best interactive animated film projects in development, the category’s strong contenders included U.K-Ghanaian branching narrative short “Unwanted Guest,” which tackles depression and anxiety.
A blend of animation and live action – which director Comfort Arthur says was inspired by “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” – the film is a dark comedy which follows a young man’s struggles with two unwelcome housemates: Anxiety Anie and Depression Dep.
Arthur, whose previous short “Black Barbie” was screened at Annecy in 2017, cleverly incorporated the actor and the two animated characters into her Mifa pitch, which dropped on Mifa’s online platform earlier on Tuesday.
The choose-your-own-adventure narrative- written by Adjani Salmon, Jocoliah Parker and Elana Mugdan – comprises four short format user journeys.

The Daytime Emmys recently floated the idea of combining Best Younger Actor in a Drama Series and Best Younger Actress in a Drama Series, and an announcement by the television academy on October 31 confirms that change. But those aren’t the only new gender category guidelines that have been announced.
The younger acting awards were established in 1985 for performers aged 25 and under. Over the years the categories have awarded future primetime TV and film stars like Julianne Moore (“As the World Turns”), Anne Heche (“Another World”) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (“All My Children”), along with other noteworthy nominees like Melissa Leo (“AMC”), Jane Krakowski (“Search for Tomorrow”), Robin Wright (“Santa Barbara”), Nathan Fillion (“One Life to Live”) and Shemar Moore (“The Young and the Restless”).

“I’ve never met anyone in my entire life like Jules,” says Rue, the tomboy drug addict played by Zendaya on “Euphoria,” HBO’s provocative teen-drama-for-adults and the network’s newest hit of the summer. And chances are, most viewers haven’t either. As the series’ endlessly compelling protagonist, Rue narrates the events of the show in a sleepy voiceover that is equal parts profoundly intimate and archly blasé. Newly sober at 16 after an overdose that nearly tore her family apart, Rue has found the one thing that can rival drugs for her affection: Jules.
Emanating a manic pixie trans girl energy unlike anything seen onscreen before, Jules floats magically through every frame in which she appears. Whether she’s biking giddily through an orchard or reciting Shakespeare in a pool without smudging her killer eye make-up, it’s hard not to fall in love with her. Played by newcomer...
