Directed by Nia DaCosta (who helmed the recent Candyman remake), The Marvels is the 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and a direct sequel to Captain Marvel (2019), which introduced Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel. It’s also a continuation of the events of both the Ms Marvel TV show (2022), which introduced Iman Vellani as Pakistani-American New Jersey teen superhero Kamala Khan / Ms Marvel, and WandaVision, which showed Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) getting light-based superpowers of her own.
The plot is essentially a superhero team-up story, of the type beloved by comics fans everywhere. It begins with Kree revolutionary leader Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) discovering a cosmic bangle that is identical to the one that gives Kamala her powers.

The Marvels had an alternate ending ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The Marvels is the last MCU movie of 2023 to release in theatres. The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel, and Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn. The film is directed by Nia DaCosta, who co-wrote it with Megan McDonnel and Elissa Karasik.
The Brie Larson starrer received few positive reviews from the audience and critics. It even failed to mint good numbers at the box office. The MCU film was released on Disney+ a week ago, and the reception wasn’t exciting. However, Zawe Ashton, who played the villain, has made a big revelation.
The Marvels’ Alternate Ending
Zawe revealed The Marvels’ alternate ending, almost killing Brie’s Captain Marvel. Yes, you read it right. Instead of Monica Rambeau getting pushed to another universe, Carol Danvers would combust along with Dar-Benn.

This article contains spoilers for The Marvels.
There’s been a lot of discourse surrounding The Marvels and its less-than-ideal performance in theaters. With all of the interconnected movies and TV shows that Marvel studios has been releasing over the last few years, it’s not hard to understand why some people are starting to experience “superhero fatigue” and no longer feeling the need to see these projects the instant they release. At the same time, it’s a shame that the movie solely focused on female heroes directed by a Black woman is where a lot of people have decided to draw the line.
The Marvels isn’t a perfect film by any means, but it deserves a lot more credit than it’s gotten for the things that it does get right.

"The Marvels" is not getting off to a heroic start at the box office. The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a sequel to 2019's massive hit "Captain Marvel," arrived in theaters on Thursday and, while it's early, the numbers are not encouraging. Based on what the film took in during preview screenings, it now looks like director Nia DaCosta's superhero blockbuster is going to wind up with one of the smallest opening weekends in the history of the MCU. Brace for impact.
With showings that started at 3 p.m., "The Marvels" took in $6.6 million in Thursday preview screenings, per The Numbers. Much could happen between now and Monday morning but those numbers suggest an opening weekend well below original projections, likely in the mid-$50 million range, give or take. Early box office tracking had the film earning as much as $90 million on opening weekend. Even in a best-case scenario at this point,...

Chicago – Some Marvel movies are essential viewing for those following the ongoing advancements in the Marvel Cinema Universe (MCU). “The Marvels” is eminently skippable, and draws from so many different MCU properties it almost feels like you’d have to cram for a comic book final exam to understand half of what is going on.

Ostensibly a sequel to the mid-tier and instantly forgettable “Captain Marvel,” the film pairs up Carol “Captain Marvel” Danvers (Brie Larson) with her estranged niece Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris from “WandaVision”) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani from the “Ms Marvel”). They each have specific light based powers that become tangled when a “Kree” space baddie from Planet Hala punches holes in the fabric of space/time, creating worm holes. So they instantly switch places when they use their powers at the same time.

There is a scene early on in The Marvels, the 33rd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel makes a triumphant return by gliding through the cosmos of outer space with her trusty alien cat, Goose, perched imperiously on her shoulder. The feline looks as if it were a Space Bastet. This teases an interesting movie; a space opera wherein the most powerful beings in the universe are a woman and her cat. Imagine the kind of zany adventures they could have if you committed to the bit?
Shortly afterward, there is another scene where a young woman who calls herself Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), but who is really a teen named Kamala Khan, fangirls hard upon discovering her idol, Captain Marvel, was just in her living room. You can guess the sputtering double takes and easy laughs that ensue, yet laugh you shall because...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is making its return to the big screen once again as "The Marvels" is hitting theaters. This not only serves as a sequel to 2019's "Captain Marvel," but it's also building on Disney+ shows like "WandaVision" and "Ms. Marvel" with a pair of new heroes joining Carol Danvers to form a new super team. Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani are uniting with Brie Larson as Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, respectively. As the catchphrase goes: Higher, further, faster.
It should not be lost on MCU fans that this is the first new team we've been introduced to in some time. If we don't count the trio of Spider-Men at the end of "No Way Home," we would have to go back to "Eternals." That makes this an important film in Phase 5. But is it important enough to have a credits scene? That's what we're here to discuss!

In an era where the Marvel Cinematic Universe frequently shuttles between multiverse escapades and interplanetary conflicts, Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels emerges as a breath of fresh air, eschewing bombast for a nuanced exploration of its characters. DaCosta, alongside writers Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik, anchors the superhero spectacle in the tangible and personal, making the extraordinary feel accessible and grounded.
On a desolate planet, Kree warrior Dar-Benn (Ashton) finds a bracelet, one you might be familiar with if you watch the Disney+ Ms. Marvel series. She believes this bracelet will solve her planet’s environmental issues. At home in New Jersey, Kamala Khan (Vellani) daydreams about fighting crime with Carol Danvers (Larson), aka Captain Marvel, when the bracelet on her arm — the same one Dar-Benn found — begins to glow. Suddenly, she gets blown back into a closet door.

Iman Vellani is a movie star, a gravitational field in human form who commands attention the moment she appears on-screen. That much was blindingly obvious as early as the premiere of the Disney+ series "Ms. Marvel," one of three distinct and mostly unconnected installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that "The Marvels" is attempting to pay off. The decision to forego a straightforward sequel for this latest blockbuster and instead push the chips all the way in on yet another shared-universe crossover has always felt inevitable -- this is a movie that literally shares the name of its own brand, after all. But Kamala Khan was a rare exception to that rule. Refreshingly, a talented and character-focused creative team (led by Bisha K. Ali) infused the journey of a young Muslim girl taking her first steps towards heroism with the cultural import, nuanced interiority, and sense of wide-eyed wonder that's all too lacking these days.

Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels is a grounding contribution to a gluttonous and increasingly perplexing Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The conventional film pulsates with a quiet force propelled by the sincere bond between its three protagonists. Brie Larson reprises her role as Carol Danvers, the amnesiac pilot from the 2019 blockbuster Captain Marvel; Teyonah Parris is Monica Rambeau, whom viewers saw in WandaVision; and relative newcomer Iman Vellani is Kamala Khan, the star of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. DaCosta’s kinetic direction and intimate storytelling style lets audiences see this trio — whose lives collide in unexpected ways — from new and entertaining vantage points.
The Marvels picks up where Captain Marvel left off. Flashbacks in the first half hour provide a broad framework, but it’s worth revisiting the disjointed predecessor — in which Danvers vowed to end the genocidal war between the Kree and Skrulls — for firmer footing. DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and...

Marvel Studios has released the final trailer for The Marvels just prior to its release in a few days. While the trailers prior to this one have emphasized the comedy and the dysfunctional dynamic between Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, this final one emphasizes the drama of the looming threat on the universe. The trailer connects to the events of Avengers: Endgame as the clips imply that Thanos’ work will not go unfinished. It also calls back to the nostalgic days of Avengers with clips of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Chris Evans as Steve Rogers.
The official synopsis reads,
In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary,...

The final trailer before the premiere of The Marvels this Friday just dropped during Monday Night Football’s game between the New York Jets and the Los Angeles Chargers.
In the preview, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’s Captain America make an appearance in flashbacks as the voiceover by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury says, “Heroes, it’s an old fashioned notion, but the world can still use them.”
Towards the end of the trailer, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie makes an appearance talking to Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and telling her, “You can stand tall without standing alone.”
Valkyrie first appeared in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. Thompson would later reprise her role and make appearances in Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022).

“The Marvels” final trailer has confirmed a super-cameo from Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie.
The new footage debuted during ABC and ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” broadcast, and certified fan speculation that Thompson’s “Thor”-franchise hero would appear in the film, partially because she starred in “The Marvels” director Nia DaCosta’s critically acclaimed 2018 debut feature “Little Woods.”
The MCU’s latest movie, which hits U.S. theaters on Friday, stars three heroes — Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (Oscar winner Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). For all the headlines about the Marvel Cinematic Universe of late, surprisingly few have been focused on the franchise's latest film release, "The Marvels". The movie itself acts as a sequel to far more than Brie Larson's initial solo outing as Carol Danvers in 2019's "Captain Marvel," bringing in the grown-up Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) from "WandaVision" and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) from "Ms. Marvel" for a body-switching adventure that also picks up a key story thread involving Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and his newly-revealed Skrull wife Varra (Charlayne Woodard) from "Secret Invasion."

‘The Marvels,’ the latest offering from Marvel Studios, appears to be struggling with its pre-sales, lagging behind recent DC Extended Universe (Dceu) releases like ‘Black Adam’ and ‘The Flash.’ But what’s causing this slow start for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) installment?
For context, both ‘Black Adam’ and ‘The Flash’ were faced with their own share of challenges. ‘Black Adam’ had an opening of $67M, ultimately grossing $393 million worldwide, which didn’t meet its expectations given the film’s enormous budget. Likewise, ‘The Flash,’ despite an anticipated opening of $70 million, only managed $55 million. The latter suffered due to controversies surrounding its lead actor and the ripple effect of a Writer’s Strike.
Now, let’s delve a bit into ‘The Marvels.’ This film serves as a sequel to 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel.’ The narrative revolves around an intriguing premise: Monica Rambeau, Kamala Khan, and Carol Danvers find themselves swapping places...

Filmmaker Nia DaCosta was skeptical when it came to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a director, and even called in her own team of “Avengers” for advice. The “Candyman” helmer revealed to Vanity Fair that, before signing on to direct “The Marvels,” she contacted fellow MCU filmmakers Chloé Zhao, James Gunn, and Taika Waititi to confirm that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was worth working for.
“Are they going to kill me and destroy my soul?,” DaCosta recalled asking her fellow filmmakers, all of whom, like DaCosta, joined the superhero fray after directing independent features. “Is Kevin Feige a bad man? And they were like, ‘No, he’s just a good guy who was a nerd.'”
During “The Marvels” production, DaCosta also texted “Shang-Chi” and Marvel Phase 5 lead director Destin Daniel Cretton to vent when she felt “overwhelmed” and “so stressed.” “Sometimes you’d be in a scene and you’d be like,...

Marvel Studios’ two-minute The Marvels featurette does a great job of briefly recapping where we left off with Carol, Monica, and Kamala and shows how they’ll come together to form an incredible, unstoppable team. And while there are a lot of character-driven moments, the “Journey to The Marvels” featurette doesn’t skimp on the action, confirming fans can expect impressive CG and stunt work.

It’s interesting how we’re only getting team-up movies from Marvel this year. Ant-Man, the Wasp and Stature first teamed up against Kang in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ Guardians of the Galaxy teamed up one last time, at least in this lineup, in their third standalone movie, and this November, Captain Marvel will team up with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan to form MCU’s newest team — ‘The Marvels.’
While it’s primarily a sequel to 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel,’ ‘The Marvels’ is also a follow-up to the events of ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Ms. Marvel’ series, in which Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan first debuted in the franchise, respectively. The movie will also see the return of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, who returns after a short while since the ‘Secret Invasion’ series, while Zawe Ashton is set to debut as Dar-Benn, the movie’s main villainess.

The upcoming 'Captain Marvel' sequel stands out from other MCU movies because it is "wacky and silly".Director Nia DaCosta believes that "superhero fatigue absolutely exists" but insisted her movie 'The Marvels' - starring Brie Larson - will still thrill fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She told Total Film magazine: "The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky, and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”Executive producer Mary Livanos agrees and said the movie is something "women from all walks of life could relate to".She explained: "'The Avengers' movies are these epic conclusions to chapters of storytelling, whereas this is a team-up within the narrative that we didn’t necessarily expect for Marvel. Usually, you wait for...

Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, gets her powers entangled with those of fellow heroes Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan in the second trailer for The Marvels, which has dropped just in time to generate Comic-Con buzz.
The sequel’s first trailer had Larson joined by Iman Vellani, the breakout of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel in the role of Kamala Khan, as well as Teyonah Parris as the grown-up version of Captain Marvel character Monica Rambeau, as they join forces to save the universe.
But the official trailer gives more clues as to why the unlikely trio must join hands as The Marvels, as we learn more about the film’s archvillain, Zawe Ashton’s Dar-Benn. Having secured a powerful bracelet, she appears bent on revenge as Dar-Benn scrambles the light-based powers of Danvers, Rambeau and Khan.

While Marvel Studios may not have a Comic-Con panel this year, the studio is taking advantage of the timing of the event to drop a brand new trailer for the “Captain Marvel” sequel “The Marvels.”
Directed by Nia DaCosta (“Candyman”), the story finds Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers beset by challenges as a figure from her past (played by Zawe Ashton) threatens to destroy everything she loves. Complicating matters is the fact that Carol, her estranged niece Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and the young Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) get their powers intertwined — every time one of them uses their powers, they switch places with one of the others.
The cast for the MCU film also includes Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur and Saagar Shaikh, with Samuel L. Jackson returning as Nick Fury following the Disney+ limited series “Secret Invasion.”

Nick Fury is currently fighting a war with shape-shifting enemies on Marvel’s Secret Invasion, over on on Disney+. However, The Marvels will bring our favorite eye-patched former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. back in contact with his old friend, Carol Danvers, as he patrols threats that travel through our solar system from his space station, S.A.B.E.R. Danvers will also come face-to-face with her biggest fan, whom audiences met in her own show on the streamer, Ms. Marvel. Both will also now come in contact with Monica Rambeau, who had a prominent introduction in the series, Wandavision.
Marvel has just released the new trailer, which brings us a bit more of a peek into the predicament the unlikely team will find themselves in. Here, we get more of an explanation of how each Marvel teleports to the locations of the others when using their powers.

The Marvels? Were they a Berry Gordy group or a Phil Spector one? Neither! It’s the name of an upcoming chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its first teaser trailer has just been released.
Longbox-owning nerds already know that there have been multiple characters who have held the title of Captain Marvel, and this movie has found a way to bring them all together. In a three-way “Freaky Friday” scenario, Brie Larson’s (star of 2019’s “Captain Marvel”), Teyonah Parris (who co-starred in Disney+’s “WandaVision”), and Iman Vellani of “Ms. Marvel” are somehow connected, and when any of them use their powers—poof!—they swap bodies to zip across time and space. This being just a teaser trailer, the specifics of their conflict (beyond the displacement) remain a little vague, but one thing that’s certain is that it will include a lot of action.
The film was directed by Nia DaCosta,...

Marvel Studios may be slowing down its output a bit, but this fall, the studio is giving fans three marvels in one. The first trailer for “The Marvels,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 33rd feature film, has been released by Disney.
Ostensibly a sequel to 2018’s “Captain Marvel,” which introduced Brie Larson as the titular superhero, “The Marvels” actually follows up on characters from three different MCU titles. Aside from Larson as Carol Danvers, the movie also features Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan from last year’s Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel” and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau from 2021’s “Wandavision.” All three characters have, at various points, utilized either the “Captain Marvel” or “Ms. Marvel” aliases in the original comic books.

The first teaser for “The Marvels” has arrived, and once again, we are going higher, further, faster baby. But this time, Captain Marvel has some new help.
Last we saw Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) — in the post-credits scene of Disney+’s “Ms. Marvel” finale — she was suddenly in the bedroom of teenager Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). How did she end up there? Well, as revealed in the footage shown at last year’s D23 Expo, it turns out that Carol, Kamala and Monica Rambeau (Teyonnah Parris) are now switching places each time they use their powers.
Now, in the first trailer for the “Captain Marvel” sequel, we see a whole lot more of that — and at the most inopportune moments too. It happens while Monica’s on a mission in space, resulting in Kamala going to space. It happens mid-battle. It happens even while Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and...

Brie Larson is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for “The Marvels,” the sequel to 2019’s “Captain Marvel.” This time, Larson shares the spotlight with fellow female MCU stars Teyonah Parris from “WandaVision” and Iman Vellani from “Ms. Marvel.”
The anticipated follow-up to Carol Danvers’ origin story takes place after the Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel,” which introduced Vellani as Kamala Khan, a.k.a. the young, New Jersey superhero Ms. Marvel.
Prior to the first “The Marvels'” trailer release, the first look at the film was shown exclusively to panel attendees at the 2022 D23 Expo. The initial footage offers insight into the aftermath of the “Ms. Marvel” post-credits scene, where Kamala seemingly swapped places with Carol. “The Marvels” teaser picked up shortly thereafter, with Captain Monica Rambeau (Parris) working as an astronaut for Saber Space Station alongside Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). When Monica hits a jump point in the space continuum,...

Marvel fans are going to have to wait a little longer to see Captain Marvel’s (Brie Larson) next flight. Disney has pushed the release date for superhero team-up “The Marvels” to November 10, the company announced on Twitter. It was previously slated for July 28.
As a sop to folks disappointed by the move, Disney shared a poster for the film.

“The Marvels” features the extraordinarily powerful Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, energy-absorbing S.W.O.R.D. agent Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), a teenager from New Jersey with the ability to harness cosmic energy. Every time the three women use their powers, they unintentionally swap places with each other, so they have to team up to figure out why.

"The Marvels" are teaming up later than originally expected. Marvel Studios announced today that the "Captain Marvel" and "Ms. Marvel" continuation will now bow in theaters during the fall instead of the summer as originally planned. The movie will now be releasing on November 10, 2023, instead of July 28. However, you'll still be able to catch something Disney-related in theaters on that day. "The Haunted Mansion," the latest film adaptation of the classic Disney Parks ride, will take over that July slot.
There has not been an official explanation as to why "The Marvels" was pushed back as far as it was, but the answer might be easy to surmise if recent reports are anything to go by. This week, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said the company would be taking steps to lengthen the time between its releases, and The Hollywood Reporter indicated that strategy could begin with Marvel delaying the...

“Don’t Look Up” and “Coda” have won the top feature film awards from the Writers Guild of America, which held its annual WGA Awards on Sunday evening.
On the heels of its Producers Guild Award victory on Saturday, “Coda” kicked off the show by winning the first award of the night, for Best Adapted Screenplay. The category also included “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “tick, tick…Boom!” and “West Side Story” — but two of the biggest challengers to “Coda” in the Oscar race for adapted screenplay, “The Power of the Dog” and “The Lost Daughter,” were not eligible for the award because of WGA regulations.
In the Best Original Screenplay category, “Don’t Look Up” scored a surprise victory over “Licorice Pizza,” which was favored to take the award, and “King Richard.” Two other Oscar nominees, “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World,” were ineligible.

You made it through the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, and the Producers Guild Awards, too. The wait for the Oscars is almost over, but one more major guild had yet to give out its trophies before the Academy Awards. Tonight, Hollywood’s top writers came together for the Writers Guild of America Awards, which honored the finest achievements in film and television writing.
On the film side, the nominees were actually quite different from what you’ll see at the Oscars next week. In the Original Screenplay category, “Licorice Pizza,” “Don’t Look Up,” and “King Richard” were still nominated, but “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” were replaced with “Being the Ricardos.” The Adapted Screenplay category was even more distinct, with only two Oscar contenders (“Dune” and “Coda”) nominated.
But it ultimately did not matter, as two Oscar nominees took the top prizes. “Coda...
