Four years ago, “Atlanta” began its second season without Earn (Donald Glover), Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry), Vanessa (Zazie Beetz), or Darius (Lakeith Stanfield). “Alligator Man” starts with two previously unseen young men playing video games and planning dinner. They settle on Mrs. Winner’s: a two-for-one stop that sells chicken and biscuits with a side of weed. But when their car pulls up to the pick-up window, the mundane desire to get high and eat fast food is shattered by surprise gunfire. The driver is wearing a panda mask, and the passenger is aiming a firearm at the cashier; a cashier who, only a few seconds later, shoots back at the thieves, his trigger finger still wrapped in food prep gloves.

It might’ve been a Tuesday night in Hollywood, but the “Boomerang” cast, crew and exec. producer Lena Waithe were ready to celebrate “Waithe Wednesdays” at the Bet drama’s second season premiere.
“It’s a beautiful time, you know,” Waithe told Variety at the event’s green carpet, speaking to press for the third time in just over a week, after the events celebrating her role on HBO’s “Westworld” and her new Bet series “Twenties,” which debuted on the network March 4 with nearly two million viewers tuning in.
Speaking of “Twenties’” impressive bow, Waithe said, “To me, what the 2 million viewers meant was that society really showed us that they’re ready. They’re ready to step into this new chapter where intersectionality is not, you know, abnormal, but it is the norm. And I really felt that love and that support.”

Eddie Murphy’s 1992 romantic comedy “Boomerang” begat Bet’s new sequel series, which doesn’t share its predecessor’s outrageous brand of humor. Instead, the new “Boomerang” is the epitome of Millennial cool — stylish and ambitious, but not willing to be defined in any traditional way.
In the original film, womanizing ad exec Marcus Graham (Eddie Murphy) has the tables turned on him by his co-worker Jacqueline (Robin Givens), who then becomes his superior. Eventually, he falls for the talented artist Angela (Halle Berry). At the time, the film was a revelation of representation — depicting black excellence in a hilarious, heightened environment and boasting a killer supporting cast, including Martin Lawrence, David Alan Grier, Grace Jones, John Witherspoon, Eartha Kitt, and Chris Rock.
Berry joins forces with Lena Waithe (“The Chi”) to produce the Bet sequel series, in which Marcus Graham’s grown daughter Simone (Tetona Jackson) and Jacqueline’s...

The 1992 romantic comedy Boomerang was the last big hit of Eddie Murphy’s remarkable 10-year run as one of the world’s biggest movie stars. In it, Murphy plays Marcus Graham, a commitment-phobic ad executive with impossibly high standards for his conquests (he rejects one gorgeous woman because her feet have bunions), who falls into a love triangle with the similarly ruthless Jacqueline (Robin Givens) and the sweet Angela (Halle Berry). The film isn’t one of the best of that period for Murphy. But it was one of the...

“Atlanta” won two Emmys for Donald Glover last season, but the Outstanding Comedy Series trophy slipped through his fingers. This year, the show is looking to take home more statuettes after garnering 16 nominations, leading the comedy category. There’s stiff competition, ranging from returning nominees “Black-ish,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Silicon Valley,” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” to first-timers “Barry,” Glow” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
But with incumbent winner “Veep” out of the race this year, “Atlanta” is a frontrunner.
The FX comedy is pinning its hopes on six episodes that have been submitted to Academy members to watch, according to GoldDerby. While 11 episodes comprise Season 2, these six have been singled out to present specific, special elements, in addition to creating an overall impression of the year’s offering. How well do these episodes succeed? Here’s a breakdown of each with additional insights from the cast and crew interviews with...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Atlanta” Season 2 finale, Episode 11, “Crabs in a Barrel.”]
“Atlanta” closed its finale with a bang, but not the literal one that many viewers and been braced for since the season began with a barrage of gunfire, a vibe that then continued with ongoing depictions of danger and violence. Instead, the episode placed Earn (Donald Glover) in a situation where he had any number of options, but he chose the one that would take someone else down and in the process damn himself as well. It was cold, it was calculated, and it was a decision that was a whole season in the making because of the threat of brutality and failure that is ever-present in Earn’s life.
Summary
In Episode 11, Earn runs around town trying to finish everything before catching a plane so that his cousin Alfred, aka Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry), can go on a European tour...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the “Atlanta” episode “Money Bag Shawty.”]
“Atlanta” continues to blow us away week to week with its insight into today’s culture, brand of danger-comedy, gorgeous cinematography, and layers of meaning all packed into a half hour. Thursday’s “Money Bag Shawty” kicked off that episode’s tone with a direct reference to a viral video.
White Tears
In the spoof, a blonde white woman with the username “lilysmom_11” addresses the camera, distraught over her daughter listening to Paper Boi’s (Brian Tyree Henry) latest song on the radio. The mom proceeds to read out loud the song’s lyrics, which include profanity and liberal use of the N-word. As she becomes increasingly upset, she’s particularly disturbed by the rapper voicing a disdain for college and referencing Colin Kaepernick. She eventually breaks down crying, and later, Earn and his friends toast to her “white tears” for giving Alfred’s song even more exposure.

Even before “Atlanta” premiered, creator and star Donald Glover had said that he wanted the show to help people understand what it feels like to be black in America. His brother Stephen Glover went one further and said that Season 2 would give a better impression of what living in Atlanta is like, which includes being black.
“We get to see daily slices of people’s lives and what makes living in a city like Atlanta a weird kind of experience,” he told IndieWire in an interview this past January. “Atlanta is very weird, because it’s a super-black town, but at the same time, there’s other cultures there, there’s history there. There’s all these things that make it unique. I think you’ll get to hopefully get immersed in what it is to live in that place on a daily basis, or to meet some of the people that you would meet.
