Zachary Levi returns for a sequel to DC’s 2019 superhero hit, alongside returning director David F. Sandberg. As such, the follow-up doesn’t quite hit the heights of the first film, but there’s a decent amount of fun to be had along the way.
The plot picks up two years after the events of the previous film, with Billy Batson (Asher Angel / Levi) and his Shazam Family of teens-who-turn-into-adult-superheroes established as a team of costumed crimefighters in their city, even if they occasionally screw up, earning them the label “the Philadelphia Fiascos”. However, when the vengeful Daughters of Atlas (Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu) show up,...

I had a chance to watch the first three episodes of the new Netflix limited series “Beef” last night, and it didn’t take long before I was hooked. It came inside of 10 minutes. Steven Yeun (as the suicidal contractor Danny Cho) and Ali Wong (as the wealthy but tortured boutique entrepreneur Amy Lau) are brilliant and deserving of all the praise that’s already been heaped upon them, and the narrative and production are irresistibly intriguing and discomforting. But what struck me was how quickly I forgot I was watching a production filled almost exclusively with Asian American actors. It all became rather seamless, even as the storyline alluded the players’ ethnicity.
The reception greeting the series that despite its title deals with beef mostly metaphorically (stemming from a road rage incident leading to an elongated feud that makes the protagonists feel alive) has been deservedly exalted, bolstered by major word of mouth.

Helen Mirren recently made her DC Extended Universe debut in Shazam! Fury of The Gods. The actor said she did a few of her stunts in the movie, resulting in a painful injury. However, Mirren refused to tell anyone on the set of Shazam! 2 that she had gotten hurt.
Helen Mirren causes trouble as the villain Hespera in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’
In the first Shazam! movie, a young Billy Batson is chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam to succeed him as his champion. Billy gains superpowers allowing him to transform into an adult superhero. He and his foster brother, Freddy, work to discover Billy’s new powers, and along the way, Billy shares his powers with his foster siblings, defeating the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
The long-awaited sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods recently premiered, and this time, Billy and his siblings have two extremely powerful celestials to defeat.

Most sequels have a tough enough job just living up to their first movie, and this one would have had a big enough job just being a sequel to the original Shazam! What director David F. Sandberg’s first movie had was the novelty of the story of a boy having the power to just speak a magic word and finding himself in his now adult “ultimate form”, plus the power of being nearly Superman’s equal (some would argue even more), a fun novelty super hero movie. The story also had the subplot of young Billy Batson’s quest to find his mother after having been in foster homes his whole life, only to realize that the foster home he is in has provided him with the family he really needed by the end of the movie. In the end, he creates the Shazam family,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” currently playing in theaters.
Zachary Levi returns as Billy Baston/Shazam in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.” In the DC superhero sequel, a trio of vindictive sorceresses called the Daughters of Atlas — led by Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso and Rachel Zegler as Anthea — want to avenge their father and take back the power of the gods they believe was stolen from Shazam and his crew.
David F. Sandberg directs and, in true superhero style, peppers easter eggs throughout the film for the most eagle-eyed superhero fans.
Here are a few that we spotted.
“The Fast and the Furious”

Plot: After the events in the previous film, it appears Shazam has made a bit of a blunder. It’s a big enough of one to bring the Daughters of Atlas to unleash a little Hell on Earth.
Review: One of the joys of David F. Sandberg’s Shazam was the filmmaker’s mix of humor with a touch of horror. The comedic superhero excelled with the laughs. As well as a few moments fitting of the director’s previous films, Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation. And now, he is back with Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Zachary Levi is once again leading the charge. As is the rest of this charming cast. They include Grace Caroline Currey, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel, and Faithe Herman for the young actors. About halfway through David F. Sandberg’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” our hero’s hometown of Philadelphia gets sealed into a giant, magical bubble. What better metaphor for this series’ place in the DC Universe, a sprawling franchise that never quite cohered and is now getting a major retooling at the hands of new brass, do you need?
When Sandberg’s first “Shazam!” film arrived in theaters in March 2019, it was on the heels of massive box office successes like “Aquaman,” “Justice League,” and “Wonder Woman” — the salad days of what was then known as the DC Extended Universe — and a seemingly clever time to release the closest the Dceu had gotten to a standalone film for the younger set. It was cute, funny, sweet, and very much its own thing. It existed in its own bubble, yes, but that wasn’t a bug, it was a feature.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods comes four years after its predecessor, introducing new forces that threaten Billy Batson and his superpowered family. The DC Extended Universe is once again changing direction under new leadership, but the fandom still has the opportunity to explore this continuation. The sequel doesn’t improve on the original, although it finds the beats that comic fans are looking for.

The Shazamily is back, and on a much larger scale, but at its heart this superhero saga is still about family, and that’s the good thing here.
In 2019’s origin story (which goes way back to 1940 comics when the then-named Captain Marvel was introduced), a group of teens in a foster home, often bullied in school and going through life alone, bonded as a family and as their older superhero alter egos. That movie, from Swedish director David F. Sandberg, was a nice hit for the DC brand at Warners and even won over critics. So naturally we could expect a sequel, even as this comic book brand is undergoing major changes. Employing the same mix of humor and heart, but really amping up the super-heroics as it were, this second edition bodes well for its future in the uncertain DC Universe, at least in terms of delivering on what finicky fans expect.

The Shazamily is back and ready to fight evil. It's been several years since the last film, and we're just weeks away from the premiere of "Shazam! Fury of the Gods." The kids are growing up, but they're not adults quite yet -- well, not in their house, anyway. One word turns them into their adult counterparts, and they're off to keep crime down in Philadelphia. It's not going well, though, with reports from papers and TV news anchors being really unappreciative of their powers. Not fair! Especially after they save a whole lot of people (and kittens).
Now the Shazamily is facing a new threat in the form of goddesses, aka the Daughters of Atlas, who are looking for a dangerous artifact.
I recently spoke to adult cast members Ross Butler, Grace Caroline Currey (who plays both versions of Mary), Adam Brody, Meagan Good, and D.J. Cotrona about working with their kid counterparts,...

The second trailer for DC Studios’ “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” starring Zachary Levi and Asher Angel in their return as Billy Batson, aka Shazam, has arrived. This time, fans get a closer look at Helen Mirren’s turn as villain Hespera, one of the daughters of Greek god Atlas.

When "Shazam!" hit theaters back in 2019, it was a breath of fresh air not only for the DC Extended Universe but for superhero media as well. While it obviously did have a big world-defining conflict that Billy Batson (Asher Angel and Zachary Levi) had to deal with, it was ultimately a coming-of-age tale all about becoming comfortable with yourself. You are able to create the best possible version of yourself, and that is perhaps best evidenced by the fact that Billy and his foster siblings can now fight crime as the Shazam Family.
So, where does that leave our heroes to go next? According to the latest trailer for "Shazam! When visual development artist Chris Appelhans (“Coraline”) realized that “Aladdin” was originally a Chinese folk tale while visiting Shanghai 20 years ago, he had an aha moment about writing and directing an animated genie-in-a-bottle retelling set in modern Shanghai. The result is “Wish Dragon” (streaming Friday on Netflix), an American-Chinese co-production with Sony Pictures Animation, in which working-class college student, Din (Jimmy Wong), teams up with pink, fluffy, snarky genie, Long (John Cho), to reunite with his long-lost childhood friend, Lina (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), now a famous model.
As Appelhans watched a friend in Shanghai “struggling with family and class and concepts of success, it seemed like that timeless [‘Aladdin’] story… about a peasant boy who lives with his mother, meets a wish-granting genie, falls in love with a princess, loses himself, and finds himself again, could have newfound relevance today,” he said. “It made me think a lot about the world.

A working-class college student meets a dragon and the two go off on an adventure through modern day Shanghai. "A tale of discovering the greatest wish of all." All the signs are pointing to a live-action Batman Beyond movie finally happening, after fans have been campaigning for one for years. Michael Keaton is in talks to return as Bruce Wayne, with it believed that his role in The Flash could lead to him training up protégé Terry McGinnis in a follow-up film. This would be a big deal as it would be the first time someone other than Bruce has worn the cowl on the big screen. But who could play Terry?
Well, one actor, who’s no stranger to the DC universe, has made their interest in the part clear. Shazam! star Ross Butler took to Twitter yesterday to put it out there that he would love to play Terry in a Bb movie. Sharing a snap of himself looking sharp alongside a promo image from the beloved animated series, Butler wrote: “Can we?… is this… a thing?...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about tonight’s two-part series finale of Fresh Off the Boat.
After six seasons, we say goodbye to the Huang family of Fresh Off the Boat. The two-part series finale of the groundbreaking ABC sitcom didn’t necessarily end with a bang. There was no huge champagne toast, parting speeches, or huge overture of gushing love. Instead, it ended with humor, a modest farewell, and heartfelt peek into the future of the family. Above all, it said goodbye showing the country that this Asian American-fronted sitcom is, in fact, an American sitcom.
Part one of the two-parter, titled “Family Van,” had the Huangs on their way to Disney’s Magic Kingdom for the first time since living in Orlando. During a family road trip sing-along to “Hakuna Matata”, their van (aka Sheila) breaks down, thus beginning a walk down memory lane.

When this ABC sitcom was renewed for a sixth season (despite low ratings), Constance Wu wasn't exactly overjoyed about the news. Though the actress later stated that she still loves Fresh Off the Boat, the renewal meant that she had to pass on other projects that she had been excited about doing. Unless she is contractually obligated to make a seventh season, it seems likely that Wu wouldn't want to continue with the show. Could the show continue without her? Will Fresh Off the Boat be cancelled or renewed for season seven? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Fresh Off the Boat will not be back for a seventh season. The family comedy series end its run with an hour-long series finale on Friday, February 21 at 9 Pm.
The decision was expected. Ratings for the series have not been particularly strong this fall on Friday. What’s more, most TV cast contracts are up after six seasons, and judging by star Constance Wu’s reaction to the Season 6 renewal in May, few expected that she would be eager to continue when her deal is up in May as her feature career had taken off with Crazy Rich Asians and Hustlers.
Other key auspices also have moved on or preparing their new chapter. Fotb creator Nahnatchka Khan earlier this year left her longtime studio home, 20th Century Fox TV, which produces Fotb, for a deal at Universal TV. And star Randall Park recently launched a production company, signing a first-look...

The Huang family has just finished summer and it's time for the kids to go back to school.
Emery is struggling with his choice of electives between drama, welding, and languages, and Jessica can't help but keep to her "tiger mom" standards.
Are you starting high school or prison?

What kind of prison system does Jessica think our country runs if she thinks confuses a list of classes like that with prison?
The way she runs her household is a bit more comparable to the prison system.
With Emery just starting high school, Evan's finally hit with his first bout of, what Eddie refers to as, "the tingles." Honestly, where has the time gone?...

“There’s a quote that, ‘You cannot be what you cannot see,’ and we think there’s a lot of truth in that,” says Peter Ash Lee, the New York-based editor behind the Asian-American arts and culture magazine Burdock. “Growing up, we didn’t see many reflections of ourselves in media, and when we did, they were often portrayals lacking any depth.”
The feelings of being “unseen” and a desire for multi-dimensional Asian-American experiences were what inspired Lee and his sister, Hannah, to create Burdock, which launched in April at New York’s Apex for Youth Gala.
“We’ve often been painted with a monolithic brush, but the Asian community contains so many multitudes and no two stories are identical — there are thousands of unique experiences and stories to tell,” Lee says.

When cameras next roll on “Fresh Off the Boat,” Constance Wu will still be there. Last Friday brought news that the ABC show would be returning for Season 6, but the show’s lead actress notably responded to the renewal with a confusing set of social media posts that pointed to her being dissatisfied with the decision.
On Tuesday, ABC President Karey Burke told reporters at the network’s upfront session that Wu’s actions would not jeopardize her role on the show and that ABC has no plans to recast her.
“There’s been no thought to recasting Constance. We love what she does on the show. I did actually know that Constance had another opportunity had ‘Fresh Off The Boat’ not gone forward she would have pursued. But we never really considered not bring back ‘Fresh off the Boat.’ It was just too strong. I’m going to choose...
