It’s no secret that it’s taken decades of twists and turns in Hollywood to get Michael Mann’s anticipated “Ferrari,” which makes its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Aug. 31, to the big screen.
But what’s less known is that the journey of this drama about Italian sports car builder and racing pioneer Enzo Ferrari originated with Italy’s storied Cecchi Gori Group before the company went bust.
In 1991, Los Angeles-based Penta Pictures — which had been jointly founded by producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori and then-rising TV mogul Silvio Berlusconi — bought adaptation rights to the book “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races” by Brock Yates that is the basis for Mann’s picture.
Cecchi Gori subsequently hired Troy Kennedy Martin to write the script and when Penta Pictures was dissolved in 1995 the “Ferrari” rights went to its U.S. arm, Cecchi Gori Pictures.

There’s only one line of dialogue uttered in the first teaser trailer for Michael Mann’s Ferrari. Following shots of cars racing, snippets of angry people, and a fiery crash, Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari declares, “If you get into one of my cars, you get in to win.”
Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gordon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell, and Patrick Dempsey also star in director Michael Mann’s much-anticipated examination of Enzo Ferrari’s life.
Neon released this updated synopsis:

Michael Mann’s last outing as a feature film director was eight years ago with the cyber crime film Blackhat, starring Chris Hemsworth. Now, the director of such classic films as The Last of the Mohicans and Heat returns with the story of Enzo Ferrari. Ironically, Mann had executive produced James Mangold’s 2019 racing film, Ford v Ferrari, in which the Italian brand was the main competition for the film’s protagonists. Mann’s Ferrari is naturally the story from the other side (albeit at a different time) as the film shows the auto giant navigating the issues of his personal life with the looming obstacles of an upcoming, dangerous 1,000-mile race.
The official synopsis from Neon reads,
“It is the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier.

Neon has released the first look at its fiery Michael Mann racing drama Ferrari, starring Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley.
Based on Brock Yates’ book Enzo Ferrari: The Man, The Cars, The Races, The Machine, the anticipated film (which has landed on THR chief film critic David Rooney’s Top 10 list) follows Ferrari during the summer of 1957, as the ex-Formula 1 racer who built his own factory and established the Ferrari brand.
But in the nearly one-and-a-half minute sneak peek, which arrived just a day before the film is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the legacy Ferrari built is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens his business, which he built with his wife, Laura (Cruz), 10 years before. In his personal life, Ferrari struggles to handle the death of their son, Dino, amid a worsening marriage, and to acknowledge his other son, Piero, with mistress Lina Lardi.

Ahead of the film’s debut at the Venice Film Festival, Neon has dropped the first trailer for “Heat” and “The Insider” filmmaker Michael Mann’s new movie “Ferrari.” Not quite a biopic, the film chronicles Enzo Ferrari (played by Adam Driver) through the lens of one fateful summer.
Set in 1957, the film follows ex-racer Ferrari (Adam Driver) as he faces multiple crises: his factory and family are under threat of bankruptcy, his marriage is in shambles due to the loss of their son Dino, his relationship with his other son outside his marriage is strained and his drivers are pushed to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia.
You’ll only get flashes of that in the first trailer, which is dialogue-free and instead opts for evocative imagery as a roaring race car revs over the footage. Mann worked for the...

In about four years time, Andrea Iervolino hopes to launch a stadium and TV studios into orbit and broadcast the world’s first zero-gravity Mma fight from space. He’d originally thought that Galactic Combat — his idea for reality-show-meets-sports-tournament following a group of spacebound fighters — would be ready sooner, within two or three years, but he’s says some “technical issues” among his aerospace partners has pushed his expectations back. “But it’s not really far away.”
Until then, the Italian producer will sadly have to contend with work on solid ground under Earth’s less exciting gravitation pull, work that includes — among a wide array of activities across entertainment, sport and beyond — being one of the producers on Michael Mann’s all-star and much-anticipated Venice-bowing biopic Ferrari. Italian film producer Andrea Iervolino, whose credits include the Oscar-nominated Tell It Like a Woman and Michael Mann’s upcoming Ferrari biopic, is laying plans for a new film studio complex in Tuscany.
Iervolino says the $55 million (€50 million) backlot, Tuscany Film Studios, will be located outside Florence and could begin operation as early as fall 2024.
“My idea is simple,” Iervolino told THR Roma. “To create an avant-garde film hub in a place that is, in itself, one of the most beautiful in the world, where stars would gladly come to shoot … I was in Rome the other day, dining with James Franco. I told him about the project, which is already in the operational phase, and he said, ‘I would come to shoot there tomorrow!”

Bobby Moresco, who won an Oscar as co-writer of “Crash,” and more recently directed “Lamborghini – The Man Behind the Legend,” is set to direct the biopic “Maserati: A Racing Life” about the family that in 1914 started making the high-performance Maserati automobiles in a garage in Bologna.
Like “Lamborghini,” the Maserati origins movie is being produced by Andrea Iervolino’s Ilbe Group, in which he is partnered with Monika Bacardi. Italian producer Andrea Iervolino is planning to bring to the big screen “Maserati: a Racing Life,” an English-language biopic about the family behind the high-performance automobiles that, along with Ferrari and Lamborghini, Italy is known for.
Iervolino’s Ilbe Group – in which he is partnered with Monika Bacardi – previously produced the Bobby Moresco-directed biopic “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend” and is also among producers of Micheal Mann’s upcoming “Ferrari” with Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley. He told Variety he sees “Maserati” as a natural segue to those films about Italy’s iconic automakers.
“I want to celebrate the entrepreneurial genius of Italians, their history and humanity,” he said.
“Italy isn’t just pizza, mandolins, pasta and the mob,” Iervolino added. “It’s a country of many geniuses who left a huge legacy. When it comes to the auto making sector these families were pioneers, way ahead of the curve.

Diane Warren’s songwriting job for Tell It Like a Woman was simple: create a hymn for female empowerment.
“We tend to beat ourselves up a lot,” the veteran tune scribe said during a panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen event. “Every now and then you have to just give yourself some f*cking applause, give yourself some love, give yourself some respect. Give it to yourself before you give it to someone else.”
Tell It Like a Woman is comprised of seven segments directed by female directors from different parts of the world. Genres include drama, comedy, docudrama and animation. “They are pretty powerful stories,” said Warren. “I wanted to write a song that could fit in all these various movies, which is basically just about empowerment. These are stories about strong women. I wanted the song to reflect that.”

And all to raise money for AmfAR’s work fighting AIDS.
Among the names in attendance were Jodie Turner-Smith, who happened to be celebrating her birthday the same day and kick-started the proceedings by shouting “I see a lot of rich people here!” Others who took to the stage to introduce various lots up for auction included Heather Graham, Rachel Brosnahan, Marisa Tomei and Patricia Clarkson.
