YouTube has teamed up with Bailey Sarian to pay homage to one of its most enduring formats: The “get ready with me” (Grwm) video. Sarian’s video traces the origins and growth of the Grwm trend, which has now reached six billion lifetime views on YouTube.
Sarian’s tribute to Grwm videos is a textbook example of the format. While donning one of her favorite gothic looks, the true crime creator gives her viewers a lesson in YouTube history.
Grwm videos date back to the early days of the YouTube beauty community, when gurus, “haul girls,” and other colorful characters turned their makeup routines into storytelling devices. Sarian’s video highlights a few of the pioneers who popularized the Grwm format, including Eva Gutkowski and Amanda Steele.
As the 2010s rolled on, Grwm videos moved beyond beauty, with creators like Jenn Im and Amanda Castillo leaning into the format’s narrative possibilities.

For shoes, she opted for some simple, heeled sandals.

A six-month-old hair accessories brand called Insert Name Here -- which vends wigs, extensions, and hair pieces on the web -- has clinched a seven-figure annual run-rate after being founded in November. Social influencers, its three founders say, have been formative to the startup’s success. And the three founders know a thing or two about social influencers.
Insert Name Here (Inh) is looking to follow in the footsteps of socially savvy stalwarts like clothing retailer Fashion Nova and ColourPop Cosmetics, where two of Inh’s co-founders -- Jordynn Wynn and Sharon Pak -- were the first two employees.
Wynn and Pak helped Colourpop become a major player in today’s beauty industry -- thanks in no small part to its mastery of Instagram. Early on, for instance, ColourPop latched onto viral hashtags to amass hordes of followers, sponsored influencer posts, and eventually forged full-fledged product collabs with the likes of Bretman Rock,...

In the first season of Freakish, popular social media stars and young actors got the chance to portray high school students who fought (and in some cases, succumbed) against a zombie onslaught. Now, the survivors are returning for season two, and they will be joined by several more familiar faces. New cast members for Freakish’s second season include online video standouts Amanda Steele and Niki DeMartino.
Steele, a teenage fashionista whose looks have attracted more than 2.8 million subscribers to her channel, and DeMartino, best known as one half of the sisterly duo Niki and Gabi, will portray students who will contribute to Freakish’s brand of high school drama, which is set against the backdrop of an undead invasion. Steele and DeMartino will join other online video stars in the Freakish cast, including Liza Koshy, Meghan Rienks, and Melvin Gregg.
The new additions to the Freakish cast were announced on YouTube via the channel of AwesomenessTV. The youth-focused network serves as the show’s producer and has a lot of experience working with the young stars cast in it.

The Janome Sewing Machine Co.’s 2008 model TB-30 was ahead of it’s time. Its 30 actual stitches, six one-step buttonholes, built-in one-hand needle threader, and laundry list of other features weren’t what set this affordable prosumer tool for the budding fashionista apart from its contemporaries. It was its more superficial accessories. The Janome TB-30 was perhaps the first physical consumer product endorsed, branded, marketed, and promoted by an online video entity. Way back in August 2008, the still independent Next New Networks (which is now the Google-owned YouTube Next Lab) and its “Not Yo Mama’s Diy Channel” Threadbanger (which is still cranking out videos at its home on YouTube) partnered with one of the leading manufacturers of sewing machines worldwide to put their literal stamp of approval on a product and help sell it to their hip, online video savvy, and presumably younger-ish audience. Yes, early-and-mid-to-late 2000s online video...
