Universal Pictures is hitting up the online newsstands for inspiration, as the studio is currently brokering a deal to secure the rights for Josh Dean’s article The Life and Times of the Stopwatch Gang, with Miles Teller in the crosshairs to star. Ruben Fleischer (Gangster Squad, Zombieland) is set to direct and Scott Stuber (Ted 2, The Free State Of Jones) will produce alongside Teller.
The Whiplash actor is expected to tackle one of the lead roles, in a story about a group of Canadian criminals who successfully committed a number of bank robberies in the 1980s. The twist in the tale? None of the four masterminds ever fired a weapon, which is a remarkable feat since they are credited with shaking down approximately 100 U.S. financial institutions for around $10 million.

Looks like all that J.K. Simmons-powered hectoring in Whiplash hasn’t led Miles Teller to greatness, it’s pushed him towards a life of crime. Of cinematic wrongdoing, at least, as he’s now attached to The Life And Times Of The Stopwatch Gang along with director Ruben Fleischer.Universal is producing this one, having won the rights to an Atavist article by Josh Dean that chronicles the real-life team of bank robbers. So successful where they that they were able to make off with millions during the 1980s and become the most feared heist merchants of their time without ever firing a shot. And that nickname? It comes from the fact that they pulled off their crimes quickly, not that they kept looking at their stopwatches as tellers filled sacks with money.Despite his obvious name advantage, Teller will likely be one of the robbers, not someone working for a bank.

Miles Teller isn’t quite Chris Pratt yet, but with a fiery performance in the Oscar nominated Whiplash behind him and several blockbusters upcoming in the form of Insurgent and Fantastic Four, Teller is a bona-fide star.
His latest project re-pairs him with his producer on Two Night Stand, Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). The pair will be working to adapt an article recently published in the online magazine The Atavist called “The Life and Times of the Stopwatch Gang” (the article is available for purchase here).
Written by Josh Dean, the article profiles the members of the Stopwatch Gang, feared 1980s bank robbers who never fired a gunshot but made speedy, timed heists under two minutes that eventually netted them millions of dollars. Here’s the synopsis of the article that’s serving as inspiration for the film under Universal:
They were in and out in less than two minutes—that...

Last year was a good one for Miles Teller. His indie Whiplash was a huge Oscar contender (even though his performance wasn't), and he also had three other films released in 2014 (Divergent, That Awkward Moment and Two Night Stand). This year he's almost as busy with The Divergent Series: Insurgent coming next week, the boxing drama Bleed for This arriving sometime this year, and the comic book reboot Fantastic Four looking promising (watch the trailer). Now he has another project for his future slate as The Wrap reports he will lead The Life and Times of the Stopwatch Gang, based on The Atavist article. Josh Dean wrote the article about a group of Canadian criminals who robbed North American banks in the 1980s without ever having to fire their guns. The gang of thieves robbed around 100 banks, stealing about $10 million throughout their run. The article chronicles the glory days of...

Just like Chris Pratt, it’s hard to find a film nowadays that doesn’t want to cast Miles Teller. The actor, who is hot off the success of Whiplash, has just signed on to The Life And Times Of The Stopwatch Gang which will be directed by Ruben Fleischer. Universal Pictures recently optioned the article written by Josh Dean that tells the true story of a trio of Canadian bank robbers who hit banks in both the Us and Canada. They became infamous for never once firing their...

We all love a shiny finished product, but as the old saying goes, there's "a means to an end." For instance, this week's World's Most Beautiful special issue couldn't have come together without a lot of long hours and not-so-glamorous work. The books our staff are reading this weekend offer an inside look at how everything from dog shows to rock stars are made. Share your thoughts on their choices - and let us know what you're reading. Gillian Telling, Staff Writer Her Pick: Show Dog by Josh Dean Full disclosure: The author of this non-fiction book is my husband,...
