- Ms. SHEN Yang is an experienced independent film producer and curator, one of the most outstanding producers among the Chinese film industry of the latest 10 years. Every film she produced was nominated by prestigious international film festivals, and also distributed worldwide, some of which even achieved great box office in Chinese film market.
Film Black Coal, Thin Ice (2014) produced by SHEN, won the Golden Bear of Best Film and the Silver Bear of Best Actor at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival and was sold to over 40 countries/regions. The title created the first top box office of Chinese independent films at the time with 100million RMB. Then she produced LI Xiaofeng's first feature Nezha (2014) and ZHANG Bingjian's North by Northeast (2015), which were selected to more than a dozen of international film festivals. In 2015, she produced BI Gan's film Kaili Blues (2015), which won the Monttgolfiere d'Or Award in the 37th Festival des 3 Continents International Competition Section, the Best Emerging Director Award in the 68th Festival del film Locarno Concorso Cineasti del presente Competition, and the Best New Director Awards in the 52nd Golden Horse Awards, etc. SHEN successfully introduced BI Gan and his debut to around 80 film festivals. 2018, she worked with BI Gan again on the film Long Day's Journey Into Night (2018) as producer, which was selected for the "Un Certain Regard" section of the 71st Cannes Film Festival and again broke the first-day top box office of Chinese art-house films with 270million RMB. This year, Director ZHANG Ming's film The Pluto Moment (2018), also produced by SHEN, was selected by Cannes Film Festival at the same year in the "Directors' Fortnight" section. 2019, co-working with director DIAO Yinan again, she produced film The Wild Goose Lake, which was selected by the Main Competition of the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, distributed and sold to 30 countries/regions, and achieved a breakthrough again of high box office in Chinese art-house films with 200million RMB.
During the development of Shanghai International Film Festival, as one of the major curators of festival orientation and strategy, SHEN initiated core sections such as 'Asian New Talent Award', 'SIFF Project', 'SIFF Co-production Project', 'SIFFORUM', 'Student Shorts Award', etc., and established a series plan of ladder-type incubation of industry talents for the festival.
