Once you’ve tasted Marcus Samuelsson’s cooking or watched Matt Damon pummel an enemy with his bare hands (on the big screen, of course), it’s hard to get excited about watching some up-and-comer try to pull off an imitation. And that was my worry going into Kelly Clarkson Night on American Idol.

American Idol Recap
Alex Preston was first up, singing “Sweater Weather” by The Neighborhood. Preston was strong vocally, hitting all of his notes with a bit more power than usual. The judges weren’t bothered that Preston didn’t change up the song too much. They did, however, encourage him to focus on bringing more energy and range to his performances.
Preston’s second number was A Great Big World’s “Say Something,” which proved to be even more successful than his first number. Preston stripped down the popular song, and delivered an emotionally powerful take on it that rivaled that of The X Factor’s Alex and Sierra. All three judges were wowed by the heartfelt performance.

American Idol’s current season is now down to it’s top five contestants after Thursday night’s elimination show.

The light mood was short-lived in the auditorium, however, as soon it was time to get down to the business of the show – weeding out one more musician on the way to naming the winner of American Idol’s 13th season.
This week, Randy Jackson felt like birthday boy Johnson had nothing to worry about after his back-to-back amazing performances during the country and rock and roll themed night. Jackson also felt that Sam Woolf, who was nearly eliminated from the competition a couple of weeks ago but benefitted from a judges’ save, had shown considerable improvement and...

American Idol’s top six contestants had to pick one country and one rock anthem to perform for Wednesday’s live show.
Jena Irene
Jena Irene was the first Idol-hopeful to hit the stage, taking on Heart’s “Barracuda.” Once again, the young singer brought her charisma and her unique vocals and wowed both the audience and the judges. Her performance convinced the judges that she could be the one to beat this year.
For her country song, Irene chose former Idol winner Carrie Underwood’s “So Small.” Instead of sticking to the song’s country melody, Irene reimagined it with her sometimes-haunting sound that completely blew resident country judge Keith Urban away.
Sam Woolf
Sam Woolf selected Imagine Dragon’s “It’s Time” for his rock song, which the judges agreed was a wise choice. Harry Connick Jr. believed Woolf’s performance, claiming he felt a “sense of commitment” from the young singer,...

American Idol’s results show Thursday started off with a surprise twist – The Following star Kevin Bacon stepping into Ryan Seacrest’s hosting shoes to kick off the night.
American Idol Recap
After Bacon passed the torch back to Seacrest, the top seven finalists were shown chatting about their performances and shared what they’d most like to do with a brand new Ford Mustang. Then, finally, the show got around to hearing Randy Jackson’s personal recap of Wednesday night.
Jackson, basically parroting the judges, mentioned Dexter Robert’s desperate need to make the songs he chooses his own. The former judge had similar advice for Cj Harris and wondered if Jess Meuse – who was harshly critiqued by the judges Wednesday – had done enough onstage to get America’s votes. Alex Preston, Sam Woolf, Caleb Johnson and Jena Irene, according to Jackson, would likely all be safe.

American Idol returned on Thursday to narrow it down to seven finalists following Wednesday’s 80s-themed night.
American Idol Recap
Making his weekly predictions, judge-turned-mentor Randy Jackson said he believed that Dexter Roberts, Jess Meuse and Caleb Johnson had all secured spots to remain in the competition for their performances. He also had some words of praise for the poor pitch-plagued C.J. Harris.
Jackson gave Sam Woolf, who was saved by the judges last week and performed an acoustic version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” a 50/50 chance of sticking around. He was less positive in his reviews of Malaya Watson and Alex Preston, who sang Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire” and The Police’s “Every Breath You Take,” respectively. Though he wasn’t entirely keen on Jena Irene’s “I Love Rock N Roll,” he thought she’d get enough votes to be okay.

Wednesday night was all about the ’80s and with the save no longer in play, we knew somebody was absolutely going to be sent home tonight on American Idol. The judges were all kinds of crazy during their critiques, but good thing season 7 champ David Cook had solid advice as the mentor for the top 8.
Warning! Don’t read any more if you don’t want to be spoiled by tonight’s results!

Once again, the "American Idol" Top 8 performed on Wednesday night. And once again, they face an elimination. Last week, the judges decided to say, "Whatever" to their lone save and they opted to protect Sam Woolf. I'm not convinced it was Sam Woolf they were saving so much as they were honoring the integrity of the season's best performance episode. Tonight (April 10) the Save is gone and that's just as well, because Wednesday's '80s Night performances were weak. I don't think anybody fell flat on their faces, but there were only one or two standout solos amidst the mediocre morass. As long as Alex Preston, Jena Irene and Caleb Johnson are safe tonight, I'm not going to worry too much about who gets sent home. 8:59 p.m. Et. I'm not even sure who's performing tonight, guest-wise. How will we fill 30 minutes? Buckle up and let's see. 9:00 p.

American Idol's Top 8 sang songs from the golden age of Madonna under the tutelage of season 7 winner David Cook Wednesday.
But who recaptured the '80s era of legwarmers, headbands and big hair the best (not counting Keith Urban, who opened the show sporting a clip-on mullet that had Ryan Seacrest calling him "Billy Ray Urban")?
Here are the singers who had "The Eye of the Tiger" and those who were more "Borderline."

American Idol’s top eight returned again this week after judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban used the season’s one and only save on Sam Woolf. This week, the finalists were required to pick a song from the 80s.
Jena Irene made a bold choice in reimagining Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock N Roll.” Irene started off the classic song sitting down at the piano, allowing the song to build up as she belted out the second half. The judges reactions were mixed, with Connick critiquing the arrangement and Lopez praising the young singer for another original performance.
Country boy Dexter Roberts chose to sing Georgia Satellites’ “Keep Your Hands to Yourself.” Mentor David Cook was on Roberts to enunciate better – and not to let the other guitarist on the stage steal the spotlight from him. Overall, the judges felt like Roberts' performance was passable,...

Look, we all know that The Judges' Save is a crapshoot. Yes, it got us more quirky musicality from Casey Abrams and it allowed Jessica Sanchez to make it to the Finals, but how much gratitude should we show an innovation that also prolonged the "Idol" lives of Matt Giraud and Michael Lynche? I guess we should feel lucky that Sam Woolf has survived to participate in a theme that I'm sure is near-and-dear to his heart: '80s Night. Sam isn't the only "Idol" Finalist with a sketchy connection to the '80s. Actually, the total number of remaining contestants who drew breath in the '80s is a resounding "zero." So... This is gonna be fun! 8:00 p.m. Et. We begin with a reminder of last week's "drama," which strongly suggests that if Sam had gone home, this would be '70s Week. This week featured David Cook as a mentor.

Talk about an "American Idol" power shift! There was a major change this week to the "American Idol" leaderboard as rocker Caleb Johnson reclaimed his position at the top of our charts with leading 7/5 odds to win Season 13. But what about last week's #1 singer Alex Preston? -Break- Alex dropped all the way down to your #4 position with 11/2 odds, leading the way for Jena Irene to hop into second place with 13/5 odds and Dexter Roberts to take third place with 3/1 odds. Caleb is no stranger to the #1 position, as he also appeared there during Top 10 Week. But ever since then, it was Alex who you were predicting to win, so seeing Alex drop down to fourth place is a real shocker. Fifth place currently goes to Sam Woolf with 15/2 odds, who's still in the competition by the narrowest of margins after the judges saved him last week. Sixth place is Malaya Watson with 14/1 odds,...

Spoilers for "American Idol" Top 8 week are below! "American Idol" favorite Sam Woolf found himself in the bottom three again this week for the third time based on America's results. But was the third time the charm in getting him saved? Sam was joined by C.J. Harris and Malaya Watson in the bottom three, but it was poor Sam who Ryan Seacrest revealed had the lowest number of America's votes this week. -Break- Judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. were given the option to use their sole Judges' Save of the season on Sam, and they chose to finally use it. Cue the cheers and confetti! Gold Derby's racetrack odds for Top 8 week actually had Sam in fourth place to be eliminated with 12/1 odds. Our first place prediction was C.J. Harris with 8/13 odds, but he managed to survive his second time in America's bottom three. Next week's...

American Idol was looking to whittle down the playing field to the top seven singers Thursday, but a save from the judges kept the talent at eight following the “Audition” performances on Wednesday.
American Idol Recap
Judge-turned-mentor Randy Jackson revealed at the start of Thursday’s half-hour elimination show that Jena Irene, Jess Meuse, Caleb Johnson and Dexter Roberts would most certainly be voted through to the next round. Jackson was proven right, as all four – plus Alex Preston – were told they were safe. In the bottom three were Malaya Watson, Cj Harris and Sam Woolf.
Ultimately, it was Woolf, the 17-year-old crooner from Florida, who failed to get enough votes from America. For a chance at the season’s lone save, Woolf offered a soothing rendition of David Gray’s “Babylon.” Exuding a bit more confidence and composure, Woolf managed to impress Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban...

So which contestant was worthy of Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban's career-saving assistance? Say congratulations to…. Sam Woolf! Tonight's elimination show, kicked off with a brief recap of last night's performances. Then the remaining contestants chatted about their performances for a little before host, Ryan Seacrest, got right down to business, and revealed that Dexter Roberts and Jena Irene were both safe this week. After a break and some brief Ford promo crap, they had former Idol contestant , Chris Daughtry and his band Daughtry, perform, "Waiting For Superman." Afterwards, Ryan talked with Chris for a moment before heading into another break. After the break, Ryan revealed that Caleb Johnson, Jessica Meuse, and Alex Preston were all safe this week, which left poor Malaya Watson, Sam Woolf, and C.J. Harris in the bottom three. Then Ryan quickly revealed that Malaya and C.J. were safe, so Sam Woolf did indeed receive the least amount of votes this week, so he had to sing for the judges "save." And Omg!

By the standards of this so-so installment of "American Idol," Wednesday night's performance episode was rather superior. Nobody embarrassed themselves, several singers shined and two contestants even did originals and earned some credibility. That's why I figure that we're heading towards the Save on Thursday's show. I expect the sentimentalists on the judging panel to feel like it's somehow wrong to send somebody home after Wednesday. It wouldn't be wrong. Cj Harris could go home and it wouldn't be wrong, so maybe that's somebody who wouldn't get saved. Maybe Dexter Roberts could go home without getting the Save? But I feel pretty sure that Caleb Johnson, Alex Preston, Malaya Watson, Jena Irene, Sam Woolf and Jessica Meuse would all be spared if America ignored them for some reason. So let's get down to the business of maybe not sending anybody packing... 8:59 p.m. Et. That was not a limerick...

American Idol’s theme of the week was “Auditions,” which meant that the remaining contestants had to repeat one of their past audition songs.
American Idol Recap
In addition to the eight singers’ solo performances, Wednesday night on Idol featured a number of well-known duets. Alex Preston and Jena Irene sang Pink and Nate Reuss’ “Just Give Me A Reason, while Caleb Johnson and Jess Meuse took on “Stop Dragging My Heart Around" by Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks. Two of Idol’s younger singers, Sam Woolf and Malaya Watson, sang Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz’s “Lucky," and country singers Dexter Roberts and Cj Harris sang "Alright" by Darius Rucker.
First up for her solo was Jess Meuse, singing her original song “Blue Eyed Lie.” Singing her own song up on the Idol stage, Meuse was confident and strong vocally. Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. all praised the singer,...

On American Idol Wednesday night, nobody bombed out. Several performancers were knock-your-block off grrrrrreat. Dexter Roberts rallied with "One Mississippi," even extracting rare, sincere praise out of notorious sourpuss Harry Connick Jr., who roared, "You sang the crap out of that song!" -Break- Malaya Watson's version of "Ain't No Way" was so touching, Jlo gasped, "You're blossoming into this star right before our very eyes. The theme for "American Idol" this week is going back to the start, which means performing the song they used for their initial audition for the judges. They will also be paired up for duets, which should be interesting.
1. Jessica Meuse, "Blue Eyed Lie," original song
This might be the most emotion we've seen from Jessica since her audition, you can tell she wrote this. She sounds great, really rocking the Stevie Nicks moments on some notes, but also showing off a great growly rocker voice. The only big criticism is that when the camera pulls back, she's standing there knock-kneed. When she doesn't have pants on, she needs a better stance behind the mic. Heh.
2. C.J. Harris, "Soul Shine," The Allman Brothers
This was ... Ok. Definitely let him show off some personality, even if he wasn't exactly on key in spots. However, I was kind of bored. It sounded...

So tonight's "American Idol" theme is basically Deja Vu? Weird. Wednesday's (April 2) "Idol" theme is officially Back to the Start and it apparently means that we're going to be hearing the Top 8 sing the songs they auditioned with. Are we really deep enough into this season to be getting repeat performances? Don't we want to hear singers do fresh things? I do. But maybe I'm wrong?
