“As a kid, I was given this very odd, awkward name — because I never met another Usher — so it was a bit complicated, but the most unfortunate reality is that I was gifted this name by a man who never showed up, who was never there to help me give meaning, give understanding, give some reference to what this name means, where it came from, and what it could potentially be,” said Usher who received the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award as he teased a few dance moves along to Bobby Brown’s “Don’t Be Cruel,” as it played in the background.

Over 50,000 people watched via livestream as hundreds filed into South Fulton’s World Changers Church International to pay their respects at the funeral of Dequantes Devontay Lamar, Rich Homie Quan, 34. When Georgia state prosecutors announced their sprawling gang and racketeering conspiracy indictment against Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug and his many co-defendants in 2022, they knew it would generate headlines. They just didn’t know how wild and unprecedented those headlines would get.
With courtroom cameras rolling, the case would give rise to the longest criminal trial in state history. The problem-plagued proceedings would be halted by everything from a jailhouse stabbing to the live-streamed arrest of Young Thug’s lawyer on a contempt charge and the recusal of Fulton County Chief...

New York Times reporter Joe Coscarelli‘s new book, Rap Capital: An Atlanta Story, is a thorough account of the rise of Atlanta hip-hop as a business and a culture. Through vignettes with the city’s eclectic cast of characters — rappers and businesspeople alike — Coscarelli paints a vivid portrait of the city’s unique wealth of talent. The book’s concern with 2013 until 2020 lands right as the forces of racism and capitalism, a constant source of tension within hip-hop, confronted the dawn of the streaming era. In the chapter on Migos,...

On Monday’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert kicked things off with a cold open gag inspired by the recent uproar over Spotify’s deal with podcaster Joe Rogan, because of the the huge amount of factually incorrect information about vaccines and Covid-19 featured on his show.
The gag was simple: A Spotify playlist where each selected song formed part of a sentence advancing lies about Covid-19 vaccines.
Of course, if you need a quick catch up: Last week Neil Young removed his music from Spotify in protest of Rogan. The same week, more than 200 scientists and medical experts released an open letter urging Spotify to quit promoting vaccine misinformation. And on Friday, Joni Mitchell announced she would be removing her music from Spotify to show solidarity with Young.
This has resulted in Spotify taking a huge stock market hit, and now it says it will add content warnings to podcasts touching on Covid.

It isn’t clear when rappers started singing better than pop stars. Maybe the opportunity was always present, just never fully cultivated. Maybe it was when waves of artists like Ja Rule and 50 Cent, T-Pain or Future, Kanye or Drake began bursting onto the scene. On a string of releases — “Oh Okay” with fellow ATLien Young Thug, “Sold Out Dates” and the latest, “Drip Too Hard” — the pair have relied on a simple and beguiling formula: We-made-it boasts delivered in the tone of plaintive ballads. Before going in, though, it’s worth noting that this was one of Diplo’s more mainstream-friendly performances. Las Vegas nightclubs go for a very specific sound – so where his recent Diplo and Friends set showcased his expert ear for hip-hop, his Xs performance predominantly consisted of big room house and ringtone rap edits.
That said, Diplo‘s DJ set at Xs Las Vegas’ 7th anniversary celebration certainly still had its gems. He was nice enough to scrawl out a tracklist as well, so if you hear something you like then find it by...

Christmas Day seems to be the time for artists to release music new, old, and just plain weird, and legendary producer Timbaland was not about to miss out on the celebration. After hinting that his latest mixtape would include an unreleased track from the late, great Aaliyah, whom the producer collaborated with on some of her biggest hits, including “Are You That Somebody” and “Try Again,” Timbaland delivered the goods on Christmas when he dropped his mixtape, King Stays King. The Aaliyah track, “Shakin,” is second on the mixtape, which also features appearances from Young Thug, Migos, Rich Homie Quan, Tink, and 2 Chainz. According to Billboard, the project is meant to be a preview of Timbaland’s full-length Textbook Timbo, which is due out next year.
