According to director Prentice Penny, “Black Twitter: A People’s History” is something of a coming-of-age story.
Chronicling a decade and a half of posts and news stories, the Hulu docuseries examines how culture and politics have been influenced by Black users of the social media site now known as X — a relationship that has evolved and matured over time thanks to changes in technology, the White House, the site’s ownership and more.
“The big reference is ‘Star Wars,'” Penny says. “Luke in the beginning doesn’t know what the Jedis are. He’s doe-eyed. Then you have ‘Empire,’ where it gets darker. Trouble is happening. Then you have a final act of coming into your power and accepting it. For me, that was the story of Black Twitter. In the beginning, it’s like, ‘What even is this thing? — and then you’re hit with real world things,...

After well over a decade in the spotlight, Community star Gillian Jacobs surely must get tired of people mangling her first name, which is pronounced with a hard G — as in “gall.” Which is exactly what After Midnight’s closed captioning system, or the people behind it, exhibited when Jacobs introduced herself on Monday night’s show.
After a brief introduction from After Midnight host Taylor Tomlinson, Jacobs greeted the crowd with a quick primer on exactly how to pronounce her name: “Yes, I’m Gillian Jacobs,” she said. “That’s hard G, soft J, but the vibe is just right.”
It was an innocuous enough statement… unless you were reading the closed captions.
As first spotted by one eagle-eyed Redditor who was able to snap a quick pic, the vibe may have seemed a bit more salacious if you weren’t actually listening to Jacobs speak.

“Reservation Dogs” took the industry by storm. Critics and audiences alike fell in love with this FX comedy from Sterlin Harjo and Oscar-winner Taika Waititi. The series follows the lives of four Indigenous teenagers living in rural Oklahoma who try to scrape together enough money to leave behind their reservation community.

Exclusive: Walking Dead maker Skybound Entertainment has struck what it is calling a “first-of-its-kind” deal with Prime Video over a dystopian thriller series from Scandinavia.
Amazon has taken rights in the Nordics for Vaka but Skybound retains worldwide distribution and controls the show’s “global commissioning structure.” This means Skybound can strike deals with buyers and sellers in different territories while the door remains open for Prime Video to acquire Vaka for other regions further down the line.
Set in Stockholm and starring Aliette Opheim and Jonas Karlsson, Vaka follows the spread of a deadly insomnia epidemic. A disgraced minister must balance addressing the crisis and caring for his son, while an ambulance nurse goes to great lengths to save her lover.
The show is co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Unlimited Stories and Sagafilm, the latter of which was acquired by Skybound and 5th Planet Games last year. The Icelandic...

To know Michael Kassan is to know the people in his Rolodex. At least, that’s the promise.
The Madison Avenue impresario, who once ran a media-buying operation and parlayed his experience there into a role as the ultimate go-between among ad agencies, big-spending clients and the media outlets that crave them, finds himself — at least for now — without a base of operations.
In an explosive arbitration filing that surfaced Tuesday, Kassan alleged UTA, which snatched up his marketing consultancy, MediaLink, for $125 million in late 2021, had undermined the business since his arrival. Executives including UTA CEO Jeremy Zimmer and the newly-christened New York chief Julian Jacobs “secretly concocted a scheme,” Kassan’s attorneys alleged, that siloed off MediaLink from the rest of UTA’s business with advertisers and marketers, then pressured Kassan to cut costs and raise fees on existing clients. “After two long years of Kassan battling Zimmer’s repeated broken promises,...

Visual albums — a bunch of videos strung together to commemorate the release of new work from a musical artist — typically either feel like shameless promotion or a vanity project. “Songs From the Hole” not only earns the label honestly, but actually takes this co-called next-level artistic endeavor to, well, another level: Chronicling the incarceration of James “JJ’88” Jacobs, who went to jail at age 15 for murder, co-writer and director Contessa Gayles combines nakedly vulnerable reflections from Jacobs with poetic recreations for a deeply affecting experience, both musically and dramatically.
“Songs From the Hole” immediately lays out the landscape of James’ crime and its repercussions: three days after killing a man on the streets of Los Angeles, James’ older brother Victor was murdered, leaving their parents to grieve the death of one child and the imminent incarceration of another. Fifteen years into a 40-years-to-life sentence, James has turned to music to...

Time may be running out for Pcpd detective Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna).
After pursuit of the suspects who took a shot at his father in Selina’s (Lydia Look) warehouse, he came face to face with Jason Morgan (Steve Burton).
The man who was with Jason shot Dante, and Jason went back to treat him while also shooting his accomplice dead. We don’t know what Jason is up to, but we know the man with him on the pier called him Jacobs.
Jason called 9-1-1 before grabbing the body of his accomplice and disappearing, leaving Dex (Evan Hofer) and Joss (Eden McCoy) to stumble upon Dante on the pier. He was already given field dressing, and the two worked to get his heart beating again.
However, he lost a lot of blood on the pier, leaving him at death’s door.
Will Dante be able to survive the gunshots?...

In 1971, just six years after Frank Herbert published his groundbreaking science-fiction novel "Dune," Arthur P. Jacobs' Apjac International obtained the rights to the story for a film adaptation. The producer behind "Planet of the Apes" was ready to craft another world set in a distant future, but with the sequel film "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" on its way, "Dune" was delayed.
Jacobs went through a handful of different directors and screenwriters in early development, but he tragically passed away in 1973. David Lynch would eventually bring "Dune" to the big screen in 1984, but there were multiple failed attempts that paved the way for his film and a remake in his wake that led to Denis Villeneuve's recent adaptations. The messy histories of failed "Dune" adaptations could justify their own feature-length documentaries but allow this to be a crash course on the bizarre "Dune" movies that never came to be.

DarkGame, the latest thriller about dark doings on the Dark Web, opens with the masked figure known as The Presenter overseeing the murder of a bound woman in a manner chosen by the highest bidder. By the way, he chooses a chainsaw as the instrument of her demise. That’s followed by Detectives Ben Jacobs and Cathy Burnette rescuing two missing children from traffickers.
Ben has barely gotten home to his pregnant wife however when they’re called back into the station. The woman we saw killed in the opening scene had vanished without a trace a couple of weeks earlier. The footage is the only clue they have as to who is responsible, but the people behind it know how to cover their tracks.

The property has also spawned both a live-action and animated TV series, books, comics, video games, and toys – the latter produced in the wake of the first film’s success and arguably the template for future movie merchandising campaigns.
And yet, as we’ve seen over and over again with blockbuster pop culture milestones like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and numerous others, Hollywood at the beginning was loathe to touch the property. After publicist-turned-producer Arthur P. Jacobs secured the rights to the novel upon which the original film was based,...

Meanie Pat Sajak showed his devilish side on Thursday’s (February 1) episode of Wheel of Fortune as he made a contestant open her own prize envelope only to reveal she lost out on a massive $100,000. The contestant in question was Shalocmont Jacobs, from Richmond, California, who had been waiting to get on the show for 20 years. Jacobs shared with Sajak that she tried to audition for Wheel over 20 years ago, but her old beat-up vehicle broke down on her way to the tryouts in San Francisco. Now, some 20 years later, Jacobs finally had her shot on the long-running game show, and she certainly made the most of it. She faced off against Jacqueline Dipasquale, a drummer and former pageant titleholder from Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, and Joey Johnson, a single dog dad and wedding DJ from Watertown, New York. Wheel of Fortune/YouTube Things were close between Jacobs and...

For most of us, the Planet of the Apes movies have always been around. Spanning five decades and ten movies – and counting – it’s hard to imagine a world without that race of hyper-intelligent monkeys and their everlasting war against man. We take this extended universe for granted, but it wasn’t always this way. It’s probably not hard to believe that at one time, the concept of a world populated by talking apes wasn’t thought of as a box office draw, and if it hadn’t been for the determination of a handful of true believers in the material, we may never have gotten one movie, let alone an entire franchise. So let’s go back in time a bit to a world without Dr. Zaius and the gang and find out Wtf Happened to Planet of the Apes?

Lily Gladstone has responded to Devery Jacobs‘ criticisms of Killers of the Flower Moon.
Jacobs previously tweeted that watching the Martin Scorsese drama brought forth deep emotions based on its “unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic” portrayals of the 1920s murders of Osage people.
The film follows the real-life killings of the Osage after oil was found on their land in Oklahoma.
Gladstone won the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage Nation woman whose family was murdered by her in-laws for oil inheritances.
Gladstone told Rolling Stone in a new interview that Jacobs’ “reaction is a response to a lot of trauma” that Native women endure.
“I don’t want to bring heat back on her for this because I think that’s unfair. Her reaction is hers,” Gladstone said of Jacobs. “We’re friends. I crashed on her couch in Toronto when Certain Women played at TIFF.

Lily Gladstone is defending her Reservation Dogs co-star Devery Jacobs’ right to her opinion about Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s take on the Osage murders.
The Golden Globe winner briefly addressed the Echo star’s comments about the film, in which Jacobs described the experience of watching it as “hellfire.” The film chronicles the “reign of terror,” a string of unsolved murders by white Americans as part of a plot to steal the wealth of the Osage tribe, which retained the mineral rights, including oil leases, on their reservation.
This was carried out in part by white men marrying women of the tribe and becoming guardians of their Osage partner’s estate. In the film, Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who is targeted alongside her family by her husband, Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), for their oil headrights on their Oklahoma reservation.

Lily Gladstone is speaking out after her “Reservation Dogs” co-star Devery Jacobs’ criticisms of “Killers of the Flower Moon” went viral.
Jacobs tweeted that watching the Martin Scorsese true crime drama was “fucking hellfire” due to the “unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic” portrayals of the 1920s murders of Osage people. The film follows the real-life killings of indigenous Osage after oil was found under their land in Oklahoma. Gladstone won the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage Nation woman whose family was murdered by her in-laws for oil inheritances. Gladstone is predicted to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
Gladstone told Rolling Stone in a new interview that Jacobs’ “reaction is a response to a lot of trauma” that Native women endure, especially when reliving the ancestral murders.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone recently joined Rolling Stone for an interview in which she was asked to weigh in on the heated criticism of the film made by “Reservation Dogs” actor Devery Jacobs, who Gladstone said is a friend. Gladstone also appeared on “Reservation Dogs.” Jacobs is a fellow Indigenous actor best known for playing Elora on three seasons of the FX and Hulu comedy series. She called out “Flower Moon” last October for not portraying its Osage characters with “honor or dignity” and for further dehumanizing them by depicting their deaths.
“We’re friends. I crashed on her couch in Toronto when ‘Certain Women’ played at TIFF,” Gladstone said when asked about Jacobs’ criticisms, with Rolling Stone noting the actor’s “face drops” when the topic is brought up. “I don’t want to bring heat back on her for this because I think that’s unfair.

The following contains spoilers for "Echo."
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is vast, which can make it difficult for various stories to stand apart or make their mark. The MCU shows on Disney+ have even more working against them, as there's so much TV out there that divesting people's attention can be difficult. For the latest entry in the MCU, "Echo," the series drew its greatest strength not from other comic books or even superhero cinema, but from another major franchise: "The Fast and the Furious."
While it may not be intentional, "Echo" mirrors "Fast and Furious" in the way Maya (Alaqua Cox) is aided by her extended family, including her estranged grandmother Chula (Tantoo Cardinal), her cousins Biscuits (Cody Lightning) and Bonnie (Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs), her uncle Henry (Chaske Spencer), and her sorta-grandfather Skully (Graham Greene). Each character offers something very different to Maya, much like the way the...

The BBC has given additional credit to the man who discovered the fossilized remains of the pliosaur at the center of a critically acclaimed David Attenborough doc, after facing criticism for “airbrushing” him out.
The lack of credit for amateur fossil hunter Philip Jacobs in Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monsters caused more than 5,000 people to sign a petition criticizing the British public broadcaster, cause the BBC to take action.
A caption has now been added to the program on streamer BBC iPlayer, noting the footage of the initial discovery was from Jacobs. His name is also now at the top of a credits section and Jacobs has written a piece on the discovery for the BBC website.
In a statement to the Guardian, Jacobs said: “While it would have been nice to have my name actually spoken by Sir David, rather than being [described as] ‘a fossil enthusiast’, I am pleased...

Echo, Marvel and Disney’s new five-part limited series, is a groundbreaking piece of television.
This isn’t the same — at least not necessarily — as being a great piece of television, but let’s start by giving credit where credit is due.
Doing an ostensible superhero show — it isn’t always clear that’s what Echo is — in which your protagonist is an Indigenous, deaf amputee will always be steering your vehicle off the paved roads and into uncharted territory. Doing it in a way that respects and honors all three of those outsider experiences without making it feel like you’re working your way down a representational checklist is an audacious and worthwhile thing.
In that respect, Echo is a triumph. It’s a series of moments that alternately had me thinking, “Huh, that feels different and right” and “Huh, I can’t believe somebody was able to do that in a Marvel show.

All of the signaling around Echo has suggested yet another Marvel Cinematic Universe fiasco in a long line of them in the years since Avengers: Endgame. The miniseries, spinning off a supporting character from 2021’s Hawkeye, was originally set to premiere last November, then got pushed back to an early January window that’s rarely where networks or streamers put their best shows. It is the first binge release of any Marvel Studios-produced series, where Disney+ has previously done very well getting fans to come back week after week...

UTA is shuffling its East Coast leadership, installing partner and co-head of entertainment marketing Julian Jacobs as the head of its 300-plus-employee New York office, as Allan Haldeman returns to LA.
Haldeman, who had been tasked in 2022 with spearheading growth in New York across several verticals, will continue to co-run the agency’s TV lit department after relocating to be with his family. As co-head of the agency’s theater business, Haldeman will continue to travel to New York for client meetings.
Jacobs started in UTA’s agency training program nearly 15 years ago, eventually going on to help start the company’s entertainment marketing practice. After moving to New York in March to oversee the office there, Jacobs will continue to co-lead entertainment marketing, a division that also does brand consulting.

Julian Jacobs has been named the new head of UTA’s New York City office as Allan Haldeman, partner and co-head of TV Lit, returns to Los Angeles.
Jacobs, also a partner and co-head of entertainment marketing, will move to New York in March to lead the local office. UTA launched the East Coast office in 2011 to encompass the film, TV, fashion, theater, publishing, news and other local sectors, with just over 300 employees currently.
The New York base also helped push UTA into marketing and advertising after acquiring the strategic advisory firm MediaLink. UTA’s other recent corporate moves include buying U.K. literary and talent Agency Curtis Brown Group to add to its presence in Britain, snapping up data firm Mediahound, securing capital from private equity firm Eqt and adding the literary agency Fletcher & Company to its assets.

Marvel fans are gearing up for the release of the latest entry in the comic book franchise with Echo, which features a Native American lead for the first time in a live-action MCU project. But just weeks before the show debuted, Marvel also introduced another Native character to its lineup, that of Kahhori in the animated series What If …?
Praise from fans and critics alike was extremely strong for Kahhori, who is an original character for What If …?, with many calling the character’s episode one of the best of the series. But there were also some viral comments that questioned if Echo was really needed after Kahhori’s breakout moment, as having two Native American characters would be “repetitive,” despite the fact that the two don’t have similar backgrounds and are among the very few diverse characters in the MCU.

The BBC has come under fire from the scientific community after a David Attenborough documentary about a recently discovered underwater creature only briefly mentioned the fossil finder who found it.
More than 2,000 signatures have been recorded on a change.org petition to have the pliosaur named after Philip Jacobs, who was named only as a “fossil enthusiast” towards the end of Attenborough and the Great Sea Monster.
“This particular find is being quoted as being one of the most significant fossils to have ever been found,” wrote Anna Morell, who began the petition. “It is unique. It is huge. It is significant. And yet Philip’s name is being effectively airbrushed from the historical record when it comes to this important find. Much of the global promotional media fails to mention him.”
