Following our top 50 films of 2019, we’re sharing personal top 10 lists from our contributors. Check out the latest below and see our complete year-end coverage here.
I’m not sure if it says more about the quality of international productions above domestic titles in 2019 or my own evolving tastes, but I’ve never had this many foreign language films in a Top Ten before. And it’s not just European countries like France and Germany. The Middle East, Asia, and Scandinavia are represented too. The consistent output of stellar dramatic work that resonated beyond borders was a truly stunning thing to behold and I hope it continues into the next decade.
Another common through-line here is the success of quiet, contemplative dramas that look to mine below the surface to find political, social, and cultural truth. So many titles on this list are dialogue-heavy confrontations in search of identity, strength,...

The 15th annual Black List survey was revealed Monday December 16, and it includes 66 un-produced screenplays from up-and-coming literary talent. Results were pooled from a survey of more than 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2019 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List.
Since 2005, more than a third of the screenplays included in the annual Black List surveys have become produced films, and often to notoriety — such as “Argo,” “American Hustle,” “Juno,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Spotlight,” “The Revenants,” “The Descendants,” and “Hell or High Water.” Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 film “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, was featured on the 2018 Black List.

Here’s a film where the term “they don’t make em like this anymore” really does apply. A largely single location independent drama with stylized dialogue and a less than politically correct edge? Mixing David Mamet with Quentin Tarantino would normally mean an indie with a wise ass streak and a modern sensibility. Here, with The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, what we have is something far more old fashioned than that. Essentially a whodunit, this flick offers up a compelling tale that keeps you wired in right up until the very end. With a single minded focus, it tells a razor sharp story about as well as it can be told, complete with a hell of an ending, to boot. A drama/mystery, the movie is literally a standoff. Gannon (James Badge Dale) is a former cop who lives in the woods and is a member of a local militia.

Writer/director Henry Dunham’s The Standoff at Sparrow Creek is a terrific mystery film with a twist, about a militia group -- with such actors as James Badge Dale, Patrick Fischler and Chris Mulkey as the diverse members -- that tries to discover over the course of one night, and in a single location, which one of its affiliates lost his mind, took a weapon from their warehouse and used it to kill several cops that were gathered at a funeral. The movie is finally arriving to theaters and Digital/On Demand this Friday, January 18, hence you can find my full 14-minute interview with Dunham in the video below. At last year’s Fantastic Fest, where his debut feature length film had its U.S. premiere, Dunham chimed...

The film begins in total silence to the point where you wonder if something went wrong with the sound. The camera pans through still trees until finding Gannon (James Badge Dale) on the ground with rifle ready to take out the deer we can assume is somewhere out of frame. It’s only when we hear the pop of guns in the distance that we realize first-time writer/director Henry Dunham has been meticulously ensuring that we process exactly what he needs us to before heading towards the solitary locale we’ll spend the rest of The Standoff at Sparrow Creek‘s short yet tense 88-minute runtime. Having Gannon visible when those blasts go off is deliberate because there must be no question that he’s the one man we can implicitly trust.

Writer-director Henry Dunham's thriller The Standoff at Sparrow Creek has met with controversy and criticism well before any footage was actually shown to an audience. Initially titled "Militia" and produced by Cinestate, the project had acquired a reputation for being either too right-wing or too insensitive. Some real-life incidents regarding real militia didn't help. Actors and casting agencies walked away, refusing to cooperate. Seeing the finished product makes you wonder what all the fuss was about, for The Standoff at Sparrow Creek is an intelligently made chamber-drama (it could easily have been a theater-play), in which several characters clash with each other while cooped-up together in a time of crisis. In the film, members of a private militia gather at a lumber mill after a...

Rlj Entertainment is releasing Henry Dunham's thriller The Standoff at Sparrow Creek into Us cinemas and On Demand and digital on January 18th, 2019. The trailer dropped earlier today. Have a look for yourself below. After a mass shooting at a police funeral, reclusive ex-cop Gannon finds himself unwittingly forced out of retirement when he realizes that the killer belongs to the same militia he joined after quitting the force. Understanding that the shooting could set off a chain reaction of copycat violence across the country, Gannon quarantines his fellow militiamen in the remote lumber mill they call their headquarters. There, he sets about a series of grueling interrogations, intent on ferreting out the killer and turning him over to the authorities to prevent further...

I’ve got a trailer here that you’ve got to watch for a new thriller called The Standoff at Sparrow Creek. The movie premiered at Fantastic Fest and was met with a lot of positive buzz.
This first trailer for the movie is certainly riveting and quickly got my attention and held me in. The story centers on a group of militia members who fall into a state of paranoia and anxiety after one of their members goes and shoots up a police funeral. The thing is, no one knows who did it and someone is hiding something.
Here’s the official synopsis:
After a mass shooting at a police funeral, reclusive ex-cop Gannon realizes that the killer belongs to the same militia he joined after quitting the force. Knowing the police will be closing in on them, Gannon quarantines his fellow militiamen in a remote lumber mill. There,...

"Do you have any idea what's going on out there?" Rlje has debuted the first trailer for one of this year's big discoveries, a contained thriller titled The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, the feature debut of Henry Dunham. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, then played to rave reviews at Fantastic Fest, earning some of the best buzz out of both fests as a major find. It's a deviously smart film about a group of men in a militia who meet in a warehouse after a shooting, only to discover that one of their guns is missing. They begin to accuse each other in an attempt to figure out who did it, and it gets even better as it goes on. This has been compared to Reservoir Dogs, but it's really something of its own and it's an incredible debut. Sparrow Creek stars James Badge Dale, Patrick Fischler,...

Austin-based genre festival Fantastic Fest is accustomed to the big guns of genre cinema — both M. Night Shyamalan and Guillermo del Toro have made appearances — and this year, two iconic women of horror showed up to promote their new films (and old ones). Jamie Lee Curtis flipped off the audience and yucked it up for the Texas premiere of “Halloween,” while Jessica Harper surprised a stunned theater of Dario Argento superfans who anticipated the event’s secret screening would be Luca Guadagnino’s reimagining of “Suspiria.” It was, and god, was it dazzling. While these big-ticket guests and films are always a draw, the best of the fest lay in the scrappy, bizarre pics fighting tooth and nail to find their audiences.
Some of the films have already seen their world premieres at Sundance, Venice, Cannes or Tiff, but they’re no longer competing for audiences against the big mainstream...

A little Reservoir Dogs, a touch of Fail Safe, and a heaping dose of 2nd Amendment commentary at its core, writer/director Henry Dunham for his feature debut delivers a tightly constructed and incredibly intense thriller in The Standoff at Sparrow Creek. Packed with sharp dialogue, intriguing characters through and through, and masterful performances from a slate of very talented, character actors, the film builds mystery as well as any, modern whodunit on its surface-level. Underneath, though, Dunham's The Standoff at Sparrow Creek brings with it a mountain of ideas, most of them fervently politically-charged and more than appropriate in the 2018 climate of gun rights debates and continual, mass shootings. The film begins with the distant sounds of rapid-fire shots from a machine gun. Someone has opened fire on the funeral for a slain police officer killing several and escaping undetected. Members of a local militia, panicking at the thought...

Henry Dunham’s The Standoff At Sparrow Creek will split a furious political divide like most, if not all, of production company Cinestate’s as-now-released slate. Gun rights, civilian militarization, police corruption – unquestionably blurred ethics, but spectacularly intensified nonetheless. On-edge interrogations and stonefaced deceit. Reservoir Dogs in lumber safehouse. Every second tiptoes over pins-and-needles as the […]

Young filmmakers tend to wear their influences on their sleeves, and that’s especially true with independent cinema. Regularly, you see directors trying to be the next Kevin Smith. Some want to be Richard Linklater. And yes, there are many, many examples of filmmakers attempting to be the next Quentin Tarantino. For better or worse, and in this case worse, debut director Henry Dunham proudly dons his black and white “Reservoir Dogs” suit while bringing “The Standoff At Sparrow Creek” to life.
