The holiday season is now upon us, and it seems only right that we’re heading into December with a brand new Christmas-themed genre movie arriving in theaters later this week.
I’m of course talking about the David Harbour-starring Violent Night, which features the “Stranger Things” actor as an ass-kicking version of none other than Santa himself.
But that’s not the only new genre movie arriving this week…
Here’s all the new horror headed down the chimney November 28 – December 4, 2022!
This week is all quiet on the horror front until Thursday, December 1, which kicks off with the release of The Harbinger, which has been favorably compared to Nightmare on Elm Street.

In her 4-star Tribeca review, Heather Wixson wrote that Travis Stevens' latest film, A Wounded Fawn, is a "cinematic reckoning with a Greek twist," and ahead of the movie's December 1st release on Shudder, we have a look at the tense trailer featuring co-stars Sarah Lind and Josh Ruben on a weekend getaway that transforms into a surreal and deadly fight for survival.
Directed by Travis Stevens from a screenplay co-written by Stevens and Nathan Faudree, A Wounded Fawn stars Sarah Lind, Josh Ruben, and Malin Barr.
"Inspired by surrealist art and Greek mythology, A Wounded Fawn follows the story of Meredith Tanning, a local museum curator who is dipping her toe back into the dating pool, only to be targeted by a charming serial killer. When a fateful romantic getaway between the two becomes a tense game of cat and mouse, both must confront the madness within him."

"Have you ever experienced anything weird here before?" Shudder has revealed a trailer for A Wounded Fawn, which is described as an "artfully chaotic descent into bloodlust, monstrous misogyny, and euphoric comeuppances of the most punishing pleasures." The celebrated psychedelic horror film will be streaming on Shudder in December, after premiering at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. It also played at Fantastic Fest and FrightFest. A serial killer brings an unsuspecting victim on a weekend getaway to add another body to his ever-growing count. She's buying into his faux charms, he's eagerly lusting for blood. What could possibly go wrong? A Wounded Fawn marks the third feature directed by Travis Stevens (also of Girl on the Third Floor and Jakob's Wife), who has long been celebrated for his work as an indie producer. This stars Sarah Lind, Josh Ruben, and Malin Barr. Looks super freaky! A very uncomfortable watch.

A Wounded Fawn Trailer: A Killer Cat-And-Mouse Game With A Surrealist Twist Hits Shudder In December
If you haven't already noticed, Shudder has been on a roll with its original acquisitions this year. From "Mad God" to "Resurrection" and everything else in between, it has proven itself as the premier horror speciality streamer. Now, it looks to add to its increasingly demented collection with Travis Stevens' surrealist rollercoaster "A Wounded Fawn."
You think you might know where this movie is going based on the first half of its new trailer. An obviously creepy man (Josh Ruben) lures an art collector named Meredith (Sarah Lind) to his secluded cabin in the woods. When she realizes that he may have sinister motivations, their dangerous cat-and-mouse game commences. However, there's something much more sinister going on behind this conventional plot, if the bizarre imagery involving demons and snakes throughout the trailer proves anything.

Travis Stevens' "A Wounded Fawn" is unlike anything I've seen all year, and that's always something that gets my attention. I see a lot of movies (it's the job!), so when something comes along that feels different, I take notice. While the film may remind you of others, it's told in such a unique way, with such a singular voice, that I couldn't help but be impressed. Through in some gorgeous, grainy 16mm footage, and you've got a stew going.
In a prologue, we meet art broker Bruce Ernst (indie horror mainstay Josh Ruben), who is bidding on a very rare sculpture. Bruce ultimately loses the bidding to Kate (Malin Barr), another broker. And later, he shows up at her house with an offer she can't refuse: a ton of money if she'll hand the sculpture over to him. She agrees and invites him in, at which point we learn...

Horror gets a Greek twist in A Wounded Fawn, Travis Stevens’ latest project that features Josh Ruben as a serial killer who gets more than he bargains for when he takes a potential victim away for a planned vacation from hell, but she ends up putting him through the proverbial ringer for his misdeeds. Watching the evolution of Stevens’ career as a filmmaker has been extremely fascinating over the last few years and A Wounded Fawn demonstrates that he’s someone who is looking for new ways to challenge himself as a storyteller. And while I am a fan of both of his previous films, I feel like A Wounded Fawn is easily his most ambitious effort yet in a variety of ways as both Stevens and co-writer Nathan Faudree find some clever ways of twisting our expectations by infusing their slasher story with a heightened sense of mythological surrealism,...

This weekend is supposed to be a rebirth for Meredith (Sarah Lind). After battling the demons of an abusive relationship, she’s accepted an invitation of romantic seclusion from a man (Josh Ruben’s Bruce) she’s just met. Her friends demand to know all the details, but she’s not quite ready to share them. This might just be an isolated yet necessary sexual encounter that ends upon her return to the city. No reason to let him move into her head psychologically or her inner circle prematurely if she’ll just be forgetting about him in short order. That Meredith is willingly allowing this stranger to take her to his cabin in the woods carries more danger in and of itself anyway—a premise screaming monstrous home invasion. Travis Stevens complies.

"It's the ultimate clickbait thirst trap." IFC Films has revealed the first official trailer for The Beta Test, a seductive, provocative new thriller from filmmaker Jim Cummings (of Thunder Road and The Wolf of Snow Hollow). Cummings teams up with actor Pj McCabe to co-write & co-direct this film, which initially premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. It also played at the Tribeca, Edinburgh, Deauville, Vancouver, and Champs-Elysées Film Festivals this year. A married Hollywood agent receives a mysterious letter for an anonymous sexual encounter and becomes ensnared in a sinister world of lying, infidelity, and digital data. It's partially a commentary on the wrold of agents in Hollywood, and partially a commentary on the disruptive nature of sexual provocation, how easily it can tear things apart. The film stars Cummings & McCabe, plus Virginia Newcomb, Kevin Changaris, Olivia Grace Applegate, Jessie Barr, Malin Barr, and Christian Hillborg. This...

In his latest interview/podcast, host and screenwriter Stuart Wright talks to John Mehrmann about how he made the skin crawling, atonal at time, film score for Devereux Milburn’s directorial feature debut and a brilliant piece of genre cinema that is Honeydew.
For Sam and Rylie an idyllic camping trip becomes an out of control nightmare. Seeking shelter on a local farm overnight when their car encounters trouble on the road, the couple find themselves at the mercy of an ageing farmer and her peculiar son. The kindness of strangers is always welcome but soon that kindness descends into hallucinogenic fuelled madness as their host begins to show her true colours… when the crops fail and the land is barren there’s only one thing left to eat and that’s a juicy lawn pig.
The Honeydew score is available to stream or buy now on Amazon and Apple Music.

It’s comforting to see the words “bizarre” and “absurd” in the press notes and director’s statement for Devereux Milburn’s Honeydew because they prove that he understands what he’s created. When a film exudes such a self-serious tone despite possessing so many odd idiosyncrasies and wild leaps of narrative coincidence, it’s easy to think you’re laughing at the whole rather than with it. Reading those words therefore allows us to know that the artist was fully aware of that incongruous juxtaposition. It might have even been his intent as a way to mirror the similarly opposed forces of the leads he’s trapped within. Rylie (Malin Barr) is pragmatic and cautious. Sam (Sawyer Spielberg) is impulsive and reckless. Their on-screen frustration therefore matches our own as mounting clichés combat intrigue.
While the former ultimately far outweighs the latter, that’s not the case at the start.

A pair of city slickers find predictable trouble in deepest New England – but Devereux Milburn’s shocker has an atmospheric edge
A first feature from director of short films Devereux Milburn, co-written by Milburn and the film’s cinematographer-producer Dan Kennedy, this is a stylised, unsettling horror jaunt that plays interesting variations on an all-too-familiar plot premise. Sam and Riley, a good-looking couple in their 20s, played respectively by Sawyer Spielberg and Malin Barr, takes the always foolish decision to leave the safety of the city for a camping trip. In this case, they elect to pitch their tent somewhere in rural New England because Riley is working on a doctoral thesis about a (fictitious) fungal infection in wheat that causes gangrene and madness in cows and people.
However, they soon get run off their campsite by the local farmer (Stephen D’Ambrose), and a flat car battery forces them to...

Those who expected more outright terror from a young couple’s sojourn in a middle-of-nowhere farmhouse from hell in “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” may find something to love about Devereux Milburn’s first feature “Honeydew.” Adrift in the twilight zone between the “Hansel and Gretel” fairytale and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” this gross-out, slow-dripping, arthouse horror siphons dread out of deadpan places. “Honeydew” sure , unsure of what it wants to say even when it’s saying whatever that is loudly.
That could be attributed to Milburn’s background as a music video and short film director, because “Honeydew” feels like a germ of an idea distended to feature length. "You're on my property!" Dark Star Pictures + Bloody Disgusting have unveiled the first official trailer for an indie mystery horror titled Honeydew, marking the feature directorial debut of Devereux Milburn. This looks super fucked up, so watch out - only for real die-hard horror fans. The film originally premiered at the Tribeca and Nightstream Film Festivals last year. Strange cravings and hallucinations befall a young couple after seeking shelter in the home of an aging farmer and her peculiar son. Stay away from these creepy folks. Starring Sawyer Spielberg in his first role, Malin Barr, Barbara Kingsley, Stephen D'Ambrose, and Jamie Bradley. Horror writer Anya Stanley describes the film as: "a filthy-ass movie and I mean that as a sincere compliment." Definitely looks messed up, don't watch this if you're planning on eatin' anytime soon. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Devereux Milburn's Honeydew, direct from YouTube: Honeydew...

It's a controversial theory, but many scholars have argued that ergotism - poisoning caused by a fungus which grows on rye - was behind numerous cases of supposed witchcraft in centuries past, including the infamous Salem witch trials. Alongside other symptoms, it can cause convulsions, hallucinations, mania and delirium. There is no ergot in Devereux Milburn's film but a similar, fictional fungus - sordico - is said to have been found in the region where the story takes place, with heroine Rylie (Malin Barr) dispatched to study it.
Travelling with Rylie is her partner Sam, an actor who is trying to get to grips with a script. Each in a separate world due to their focus on work, they lose their way on a trip through the country and can find nobody helpful to provide them with directions. When night falls and they're politely but firmly...

In 1998, the brilliant marketing campaign for “The Blair Witch Project” nearly broke the still-fledgling commercial internet, peppering it with hints and rumors and worries that the found-footage thriller was actually real, forever changing movie marketing in the process. Over two decades later, it’s still a stroke of genius worthy of being imitated, and even if consumers are far too hip to believe all this mumbo-jumbo again (or are they?), few things are as amusing as watching the lines between “film” and “reality” blur.
Enter Brendan Walsh’s IFC Midnight thriller “Centigrade,” which adds a (literally) chilling dimension to a genre still pushing its boundaries. The film’s official synopsis plays up the “Blair Witch Project” of it all: “In 2002, a young American couple, Matthew and Naomi travel to the arctic mountains of Norway. After pulling over during a snowstorm, they wake up trapped in their SUV, buried underneath layers of snow and Ice.
