A new Broadway season is gearing up, and there are currently three productions of musicals (all new) set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below, we recap the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast and creative types and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“King Kong” (previews begin October 5; opens November 8)
In this musical adaptation of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s classic 1933 film of the same name, an ambitious young actress and a maverick filmmaker voyage from the bustling streets of 1930s New York to an uncharted island to capture the greatest wonder the world has ever seen. At the center of this 21st-century reimagining: a 2,000-pound, 20-story gorilla, and the woman who risks everything to help him.
With a book by Tony-winning playwright Jack Thorne...

Chicago – Has anybody in show business had more “comebacks” than Cher… or if you added her many last names Cher Sarkisian La Piere Bono Allman? All of the triumphs and downturns are shoehorned into “The Cher Show,” now in Chicago in a pre-Broadway run through July 15, 2018. Click here for more details, including ticket information.
Play Rating: 3.5/5.0
The huge entertainment in the show is provided by the three women portraying Cher in different life eras… Babe (Micaela Diamond), Lady (Teal Wicks) and Star (Stephanie J. Block). All have transcendent talent, because they transcend the fragmented and overstuffed story with their singing, dancing and performance chops. In what must be a whirlwind of a show for the three, they interact throughout and ponder Cher like the ghosts of “A Christmas Carol,” but with much more show biz and sex appeal.
My 3 Chers: Lady (Teal Wicks), Star (Stephanie J. Block) and Babe (Micaela...

The new jukebox bio-musical “The Cher Show” captures a good amount of the vibrant personality and genuinely admirable perseverance that make Cher the ultimate celebrity survivor. But like Cher herself, the show careens from career to career without a consistent thrust other than awesome attitude. In its pre-Broadway version premiering in Chicago, “The Cher Show” sings but doesn’t soar, and seems likely to appeal primarily to the most adoring of her admittedly enormous fan base, suggesting a commercial trajectory more in line with “On Your Feet” than “Beautiful.”
In the book by Rick Elice, the show opens with a scene where the mature Cher (Stephanie J. Block) decides to change the opening number of a fictional variety show about her own life. In conversation with her two younger selves, Cher decides to turn back time, taking us to a stylized sequence where a young Cher is comforted by...

NBC's second live musical event, Peter Pan Live! aired Thursday, Dec. 4. The three hour musical production starred Girls actress Allison Williams in the title role and Christopher Walken as the villainous Captain Hook. Here's a look at some of the best, worst and most Walken-tastic moments from the show.
The Best
Nana - Hands down, the dog is the breakout star from the beginning of the production. Not only did Nana not miss a cue (unlike some of the human performers) but she's also just super adorable.

Mrs. Darling's First Song – Broadway veteran Kelli O'Hara, who played Wendy's mother, shined with her performance of "Tender Shepherd" -- one of the production's early standout numbers.

When it comes to TV, social media loves a spectacle – especially a live one.
When NBC aired The Sound of Music Live last year, audiences reacted almost immediately by flooding social media with updates – both good and bad – about the show and, in particular, Carrie Underwood’s performance. The reaction was strong enough to make producers worry and even prompt Allison Williams to beg fans to not “hate-watch” Peter Pan Live.
If you’re planning to tune in and live-tweet NBC’s live broadcast of the boy who never grew up, which airs tonight at 8 p.m., you better bring your A game.
So here’s a handy guide to what to you should be ready for when it comes to making the most of your “live social media TV viewing” experience:
Know your hashtags. The official tracker is #PeterPanLive. Use the tag wisely. (And you can follow NBC's curated Twitter list of the broadcast's stars, but just...

The cast of NBC's live "Sound of Music" production are hard at work with just one week to go before the television broadcast. But a few of the cast members took some time out to join the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Carrie Underwood stopped by the "Today" anchor desk to talk about the show, which she says is coming along nicely.
"We still have a week to prepare, but it's coming along really, really wonderfully. Such a great cast, so much talent. I'm blessed, for sure," says Underwood. "'The Sound of Music' is a big legacy and it's so important to so many people, it's such a beautiful story, beautiful music. We just want to do it justice."
She also introduced co-stars Michael Campayno and Ariane Rinehart, who play Rolf and Liesl in the production, as they took to the Macy's star to perform "Sixteen Going on Seventeen." Gif below,...
