Exclusive: Newsnight editor Stewart Maclean has unexpectedly quit as the BBC considers making dramatic cuts to its flagship current affairs show.
After less than two years leading Newsnight, Maclean has decided to become BBC World News Content’s Africa bureau chief, meaning he will relocate to Nairobi, Kenya.
Sources said the timing of Maclean’s departure has left colleagues “aghast” because it coincides with a period of uncertainty for Newsnight.
BBC News managers are looking to make up to £5M ($6M) of cuts to Newsnight, with talks ongoing over axing its team of correspondents and making the show more debate-led in its content.
Many think stripping Newsnight of its original reporting could sound the death knell for a show that has been an agenda-setting fixture on BBC2 since 1980.

TV host Jeremy Clarkson opened a can of royal whoop-ass upon himself for his comments about Meghan Markle in a recent column for the UK’s The Sun tabloid. On Saturday, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan dismissed an apology by the newspaper for running the column, calling it a “PR stunt” and saying they had not been contacted directly.
“While the public absolutely deserves the publication’s regrets for their dangerous comments, we wouldn’t be in this situation if The Sun did not continue to profit off of and exploit hate, violence and misogyny,” a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan said.
“A true apology would be a shift in their coverage and ethical standards for all. Unfortunately, we’re not holding our breath.”
In the column, Clarkson wrote of Duchess Meghan: “At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of...

The Sun‘s apology over a removed column from British media personality Jeremy Clarkson is nothing more than a “PR stunt,” a rep for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has said.
In a statement to the BBC following The Sun’s retraction of and apology for the column — in which Clarkson expressed hate for the Duchess of Sussex on a “cellular level” — a spokesperson for the couple called the outlet’s response disingenuous.
“The fact that the Sun has not contacted The Duchess of Sussex to apologize shows their intent,” they told the magazine. “This is nothing more than a PR stunt.”
The statement went on to express that while some kind of response was necessary for “the public,” a “shift” in how the U.K. outlet covers the couple would be a “true apology.”

Jeremy Clarkson will remain the host of ITV’s “Who Wants to Be a Million?” in the U.K. despite backlash from an op-ed in The Sun that members of Parliament condemned as “violent misogynistic language” against Meghan Markle, according to Kevin Lygo, ITV’s managing director of media and entertainment.
“What he writes in a newspaper column is really more for you to talk about because we have no control over what he says,” Lygo said to the Broadcasting Press Guild in London. “We hire him as a consummate broadcaster of the most famous quiz show on television. So it’s not quite in our wheelhouse.”
Lygo also called his remarks “awful” and noted that Clarkson has “acknowledged that,” but “should apologize.”
“I don’t know what he was thinking when he wrote that,” Lygo said.

Rupert Murdoch’s The Sun and British pubcaster ITV are facing pressure from dozens of UK MPs over the Jeremy Clarkson row sparked by the former Top Gear host using “violent, misogynistic language” against Meghan Markle. Letters can be seen below in full as UK press regulator Ipso reports the column is now the most complained about article of all time, drawing more than 17,500 complaints as of this morning.
Led by Women and Equalities Committee Chair Caroline Noakes, around 50 MPs have this morning put their names to a letter to The Sun editor Victoria Newton to “condemn in the strongest possible terms the violent, misogynistic language used against The Duchess of Sussex,” while calling for “definitive action” to be taken against Clarkson and work to be done to prevent the situation happening again.
