The parents of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old man who died after being brutally beaten by Memphis police, will attend President Biden’s State of the Union address on Feb. 7, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus announced. Brandon Tsay, who disarmed the Monterey Park gunman after he entered a second dance hall near Los Angeles, was also invited to the speech by Democratic Rep. Judy Chu of California.
Caucus chairman, Democratic Rep. Steven Horsford of Nevada, confirmed Nichols’ parents accepted the invitation to watch Biden’s address before Congress. “This...

Update: Joe Biden spoke for about a half an hour to about 100 guests at a fundraiser in Brentwood on Thursday, covering a range of topics including the state of the fractured media.
“There are no editors anymore,” Biden said, per a pool report. “The ability of newspapers to have much impact is de minimis.”
As he did last week at a fundraiser in New York at the home of James Murdoch, Biden also cited Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use tactical nuclear weapons. He also called Pakistan one of the most dangerous countries in the world as it had “nuclear weapons without any cohesion.”
He predicted that the work of the January 6th Committee would result “in some real change” as a consequence of their work.
Biden also participated in a photo line earlier in the evening for those writing higher-dollar checks.

More than 100 Democrats in the House and Senate and independent Bernie Sanders have signed a letter urging the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to negotiate a fair contract with IATSE, saying, “We are united in our belief in the importance of livable wages, sustainable benefits, and reasonable rest periods between shifts and during the workday” – three of the union’s core demands.
The letter was signed by 31 senators and 87 representatives and sent to AMPTP president Carol Lombardini.
The union’s members begin voting on strike authorization Friday in advance of what could be the last round of bargaining before a strike that would shut down film and TV productions across the country.
The politicians also reminded Lombardini that industry workers “risked their health and safety” during the pandemic, and that “the entertainment you jointly produce is helping to heal our nation.”
Here is their letter:

SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris is asking her members to urge Congress to expand the federal Cobra healthcare subsidy for workers who lost their jobs during the pandemic and are in danger of losing their health coverage.
“It is time that Congress pass the next federal relief package to protect the American worker from the economic consequences of the Covid-19 public health crisis,” she said tonight in a message to her members. “Performers are uniquely suffering from prolonged unemployment and loss of income and some will need federal assistance to keep their healthcare coverage.”
SAG-AFTRA members, she said, rely on the partial Cobra healthcare subsidy to maintain coverage under the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan if they don’t meet minimum earnings thresholds.
Congress members Robert Scott (D-va), Congressman Steven Horsford (D-nv), and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-mi) are pushing for passage of H.R. 6514 – the Worker Health Coverage Protection Act, which expands...

When director Rachel Lears started following four women candidates in the 2018 congressional primaries, she had no idea one of them would become the focus of national attention. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was one of four female political outsiders challenging Democratic incumbents that Lears pick to follow for this political wild ride, as they attempt to knock down the doors to power in the U.S. Congress. The resulting documentary, Knock Down The House, is as thrilling, gripping and inspiring, as it is ground-breaking.
Two of the four women candidates featured in the documentary, St. Louisan Cori Bush and Nevadan Amy Vilela, will appear at a question-and-answer session after the St. Louis opening of Knock Down The House, at 7:05 Pm at the Tivoli Theater, as the film begins its local theatrical run. Exclusive: Deadline broke news last Wednesday that Netflix had won a heated auction for the Sundance documentary Knock Down the House, but it wasn’t immediately clear how much the picture sold for. I can reveal that Netflix paid $10 million for worldwide rights to a film that yesterday received Sundance’s coveted Festival Favorite Award.
By my count, that makes Knock Down the House the biggest documentary sale ever brokered at a film festival, this for the Rachel Lears-directed film that followed the campaigns of congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and three other candidates who ran against incumbents in the elections last fall, shaking up the status quo and bringing fresh blood into Congress.
Long marginalized in comparisons to narrative films, documentaries have entered an unprecedented golden age, one that is only going to get better, as studio-backed subscription streaming services will seek out these films in the next year or...

When filming “Knock Down the House,” Rachel Lears was worried at one point that none of the women she followed in their campaigns for Congress would be successful. But then Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez pulled off her stunning upset in the Bronx, becoming the youngest woman ever elected to the House of Representatives.
“It was a really incredible experience going through that election day and night with her,” Lears told TheWrap’s Steve Pond at the Sundance Film Festival. “I was a little delirious filming for 30 straight days, probably, but it was a pretty amazing night.”

Along with Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign, “Knock Down the House” follows three other progressive women with working class backgrounds who, after Donald Trump’s election, decided to run for Congress in the 2018 midterms. Exclusive: Netflix is about to get on the board in a big way at the Sundance Film Festival, near a deal on one of the buzziest documentaries to play Park City. Netflix is closing on Knock Down the House, the Rachel Lears-directed film that followed the campaigns of four progressive women who ran against incumbents in the elections last fall, shaking up the status quo and bringing fresh blood into Congress.
One of the main figures in the film is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who ran as a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and was elected to New York’s 14th District and became at age 29 the youngest woman ever elected to the U.S. Congress. Ocasio-Cortez was expected to come to Sundance, but had to cancel the trip because of the turbulence of the government shutdown which was just coming to an end.
