There is a lot of teasing in Netflix's June 30-launching Gypsy, but ultimately the Naomi Watts-starring series is a non-thrilling exercise in temptation and betrayal that goes nowhere and doesn’t get there particularly fast. Created by newcomer Lisa Rubin and partially directed by Fifty Shades Of Grey helmer Sam Taylor-Johnson, the 10-episode first season stumbles most noticeably in its near total waste of the Oscar-nominated Watts’ skills and talent. As I say in my…...

To say there’s no conflict in “Gypsy” would be a slight exaggeration, but to say it’s one of the most boring thrillers on Netflix would not. Intended as an exploration of a middle-aged woman’s unrestrained desires, the new series never elevates its drama to anything thematically challenging or narratively titillating. It’s as familiar as it wants to be risqué, which is the one rule you shouldn’t break when constructing a mind game.
Lisa Rubin’s 10-episode first season tracks Naomi Watts’ Jean Halloway, a Manhattan-based therapist with a good husband, Michael (Billy Crudup), and an adorable child, Dolly (Maren Heary). She spends her days seeing patients, discussing treatment plans with her colleagues, and getting blow-outs as a relaxing treat. Her nights are spent experimenting in the kitchen, watching movies with the family, and drinking a glass of wine or two.

Universal Television, Working Title and Netflix are assembling a roster of talent for next year’s ten-part psychological thriller, Gypsy, with news emerging today that Naomi Watts has been cast in the lead role.
After picking up a straight-to-series order ahead of a premiere in 2017, Watts will assume the role of Jean Holloway, a tenacious therapist “who begins to develop dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives.”
Beyond that, there’s little-to-no plot information for the moment, though welcoming an actress of Watts’ calibre is no doubt a major coup for Universal and Netflix’s series. Sam Taylor-Johnson of Fifty Shades of Grey fame will helm the first two episodes, while Sean Jablonski of Working Title is on board as showrunner. Lisa Rubin, meanwhile, penned the script.

Netflix today announced its latest in a long line of original series launching over the next two years: Gypsy, a psychological thriller written by Lisa Rubin that follows "a therapist who begins to develop dangerous and intimate relationship with the people in her patients’ lives," which makes it sound like an even steamier version of In Treatment. The show joins Netflix's upcoming slate of Fuller House, Love, Trollhunters, Mindhunter, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and, presumably, a bunch of shows we haven't even heard of yet but will spend countless hours binge-watching in the late 2010s regardless.
