Fans were banned from the pandemic-postponed Tokyo Olympics which will open in two weeks, following a state of emergency on Thursday, Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa told the Japanese news agency Kyodo.
The ban was announced by the International Olympic Committee and Japanese organizers, reducing the games to a made-for-tv event.
Fans from aboard were banned months ago, and the new measures announced by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will clear venues around Tokyo — indoor and outdoor — of any fans at all.

Paris and Los Angeles are now confirmed as the sites of the next two summer Olympic Games. Though the deal was first reported by the Los Angeles Times back in July, the location of the next two games were made official by the International Olympics Committee with an announcement by Ioc President Thomas Bach at the organization’s meeting in Lima, Peru on Wednesday. “Congratulations to Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028! This historic double allocation is a ‘win-win-win’ situation for the city of Paris, the city of Los Angeles and the Ioc,” said Bach. “These are two great cities from two.

All sambas have to end sometime, and on Sunday, the 2016 Summer Olympics came to a close at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Much like the games’ opening pageant, the closing ceremony played up the host nation’s culture and customs, featuring traditional Brazilian song and dance, as well as a moving flag-raising ritual and one heckuva fireworks display.
Halfway through the event, an edited version of which aired on NBC Sunday evening, Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike accepted the Olympic flag, marking the official transition of the games to the Japanese city for 2020.
A few highlights from the ceremony:...

Tokyo, you're up. With the 2016 Rio Olympics finally at a close, the Olympic flag has been handed over to Tokyo - where the 2020 Olympic Games will take place. Tokyo's Yuriko Koike accepted the Olympic flag from International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach after he received the flag from Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes. And how did Tokyo welcome the hand off? With a nod to Super Mario Bros, of course. Japan's prime minister Shinzo Abe arrived at the closing ceremony dressed like the video game plumber, and popped up out of a large, green pipe in the stadium. "Shinzo Abe Just Turned Into Super Mario,...

While the crowd at the Rio Olympics Aquatics Stadium is usually filled with cheers and applause, boos rang out when Russian swimmer Yulia Efimova entered the arena on Sunday for her preliminary heat of the 100-meter breaststroke. Efimova, a 24-year-old first-time Olympian, was among the 118 Russian athletes barred from the 2016 Games due to a state-sponsored doping program at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but she was quietly reinstated and allowed to compete. The swimmer previously served a 16-month suspension for doping and earlier this year failed a test for meldonium, a banned substance that resulted in the two-year suspension of tennis star Maria Sharapova earlier this year,...

The International Olympic Committee didn’t take competitive bids the way it did in 2011 — when Fox and Espn joined the fray — before accepting Comcast’s $7.65B offer to carry the games in the U.S. through 2032. But the $1.4B increase in the outlay by the owner of NBCUniversal “is not small” for the Ioc its president, Thomas Bach, said today in a conference call. NBC has handled 23 Olympics beginning with the Tokyo games in 1964 and the Ioc “wanted to build on this long term partnership with NBC so we could be sure, and we are sure, that the Olympic games will be presented in a way the Olympic spirit requires.” He vowed that more than 90% of the revenue will go to organizers of future Olympics, giving planners financial security. Comcast chief Brian Roberts says he felt comfortable making the offer, even though he doesn’t know where the future games will be held,...
