Kanu Behl’s sophomore Agra takes an unapologetic stance on the exploration of human desires, particularly the extremes to which one can go to satiate their repressed wants. In this stark tale, empathy becomes a casualty, sacrificed at the altar of self-preservation. Antipathy becomes a shield, not just against societal judgment but against the relentless inquiry into the protagonist’s soul. Being the victim of fractured masculinity, he becomes the unwitting perpetrator, orchestrating a cycle of belligerent steps that threatens to consume any flicker of virtuous clarity. Yet, amid this psychological battleground, the very excuses that he clings to for survival become the chains that bind him to a distorted reality. The assertive conduct, once a coping mechanism, transforms into a prison of his own making. The walls echo with haunting whispers of what could have been, drowned out by the cacophony of corollaries that now define his existence.

After his debut feature “Titli” bowed at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard strand in 2014, Kanu Behl is back on the Croisette with “Agra,” which has its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight.
” ‘Agra’ grasps the reality of patriarchy in India through the prism of male sexual misery,” is how the festival describes the film. It follows Guru, a young single call center employee who still lives with his parents. Consumed by frustration, he plunges into a fever bordering on insanity, between pathetic fantasies, dating apps and hysterical self-harm. The film also explores the role property can play in a young man’s emancipation.
After the theatrical release of “Titli” in India and France in 2015, Behl began thinking about what to do next. “I realized that I had felt a certain sexual repression or an inability to express myself sexually in my adolescent years,” Behl told Variety. The filmmaker realized that he...

Decades before MeToo became an official platform, Jodie Foster's Oscar-winning act in the 1988 film "The Accused" had already tried initiating a conversation along the line that a woman cannot be slut-shamed or victim-blamed for a sexual assault or rape on her, no matter what. In India, a few years back, we had the brilliant "Pink", which underlined the maxim that, when a woman says so, no means no.
"Guilty", touted as the brainchild of an all-women creative, tries discussing the conversation through a story of rape allegation set against the backdrop of MeToo, which makes it relevant. Any film that attempts to talk to the audience on this subject should be deemed important, and that is despite its cinematic merit or the lack of it.
Yet, as "Guilty" highlights its message, you somehow are left with the impression that, instead of charting a new course, the makers are happy...

There’s a scene late in “Chhapaak,” writer-director Meghna Gulzar’s stirringly crafted and intelligently uplifting fact-based drama, where Malti (Deepika Padukone), the survivor of a horrific assault, tentatively expresses her warm feelings to Amol (Vikrant Massey), the crusading activist who has taken up the cause of women who have suffered similar attacks. But, true to form for this fiery idealist, Amol gruffly interrupts her romantic overtures. “This stuff,” he insists, “belongs in the movies.”
It’s tempting to read the exchange as Gulzar’s meta commentary on her own movie, which scrupulously avoids the emotional and stylistic extremes that, for better or worse, have come to define much of contemporary Indian cinema (and not just for Western audiences).
To put it another way: There are no lavish production numbers, no exhilarating romantic interludes, no slo-mo acrobatics of any sort — and only two songs, neither of which are sung by anyone onscreen.

Chhapaak
Starring Deepika Padukone, Vikrant Massey,
Directed by Meghna Gulzar
What a splash Meghna Gulzar makes with Chhapaak! This sensitive stunning film about a real-life acid-attack victim’s attempt to rebuild her life as surgeons try to put together her shattered face, could easily have vacillated between cringe-inducing melodrama and unrealistic optimism. In this gut-wrenching masterpiece she has co-scripted with Atika Chohan, Meghna Gulzar allows herself no easy exits.
The fluent and virile narration (editor Nitin Baid does a splendid job of re-constructing the saga of the protagonist’s shattered life) drags us into the protagonist Malti’s fight to win justice against her attacker and dares us to leave her to her own devices.
This, I am happy to say, is impossible to do. Chhapaak persuades us with gentle hands to remain invested in Malti’s battle as she and her lawyer (an incredible career-making performance by Madhurjeet Sarghi...
