The prestigious Cannes Film Festival witnesses several features each year, but only a handful of them manage to create an impression and earn a standing ovation worthwhile of talking. While the debate about whether the length of standing ovations at the festival is directly proportionate to its quality or not is an ongoing debate, the length is nonetheless a part of popular tradition and to some degree provides a measurement of the film’s future success.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Furiosa, the prequel to the Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road, recently received an incredible almost 8-minute long-standing ovation. But it might feel nothing when compared to Guillermo Del Toro’s 2006 epic, Pan’s Labyrinth.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had its splashy world premiere at Cannes earlier today and, as we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the first reviews are now in for George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road prequel.
The movie received a 7-minute standing ovation in France and, as we write this, it sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. While not a perfect score, the consensus is clearly incredibly positive overall, with the action, visuals, and cast - led by Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth - all receiving praise.
In fact, it appears Furiosa only falls short in the eyes of some because it didn't live up to their lofty expectations.
Overall, it's looking like Miller has another winner on his hands, and providing those all-important box office numbers are good, then we're sure the filmmaker's plans for yet another Mad Max prequel (focusing on the title character) will come to fruition.

It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May is filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 17 is John Kransinski’s “If,” which follows a young girl who can see the abandoned imaginary friends of adults starring Cailey Fleming, Ryan Reynolds, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. Also hitting theaters is the Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black,” which chronicles the life of Winehouse and the creation of her best-selling album starring Marisa Abela, Eddie Marsan, Jack O’Connell and Lesley Manville. Two films getting limited releases this week are “Babes,” a comedy following a woman who gets unexpectedly pregnant after a one-night stand, and “Taking Venice,” a documentary about the turbulent times at the Venice...

Furiosa: A Max Max Saga had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, nearly a decade after the debut of Mad Max: Fury Road at the same festival. The first reviews for Furiosa have begun pouring in, and while they’re just as full of praise as those first reactions, it doesn’t sound like it reaches the heights of Fury Road.
Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman said that while Furiosa contains “a handful of awesome action moments,” the action doesn’t take center stage in the same way it did in Fury Road. “The most important thing to say about ‘Furiosa,’ however, is that what it all adds up to is a movie that can be darkly bedazzling, and that will be embraced and defended in a dozen passionate ways — but it’s one that, to me, falls very short of being a ‘Mad Max’ home run,” Gleiberman wrote.

The cast and creatives behind Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hit the red carpet for its Cannes Film Festival debut on Wednesday.
Stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth both went with surprising picks for their style for the film’s Cannes premiere.
After making headlines for her elaborate Paco Rabanne ensemble at the film’s Australian premiere, Taylor-Joy went with a classic champagne-colored Dior ball gown complemented by Tiffany & Co. jewelry. The platinum necklace, a centerpiece for the star’s look, features diamonds of more than 68 total carats. Rounding out her look are 18-karat white gold diamond earrings and two platinum diamond rings from Tiffany & Co.
While The Menu star’s classic Old Hollywood styling was a departure from some of her recent red carpet looks, the choice to go with Dior was not. The 28-year-old star is an ambassador for the luxury fashion house. The French brand has...

George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the anticipated latest installment in his apocalyptic franchise, had its world premiere here at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.
The film received a standing ovation of 7 minutes and 50 seconds after the final frame played in Cannes’ massive Palais, which hosted the buzzy premiere and the cast that included Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays the titular character first essayed by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road; Chris Hemsworth; and Tom Burke.
Baz Lurhmann, who was at Cannes two years ago with Elvis, was overheard as he exited the theater tonight calling the film “a steampunk, Wagnerian opera.”
Said Miller following the screening of the Warner Bros/Village Roadshow prequel to 2015’s Fury Road (which likewise world premiered in Cannes), “Thank you. We worked very hard on this film and it is very interesting to see what you make of it.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth installment in George Miller’s celebrated action franchise, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night and was greeted with a seven-minute standing ovation in the Grand Lumiere Theatre as Miller and members of his cast, including stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, looked on.

Taylor-Joy makes a fantastic action heroine, facing down a hilariously evil Chris Hemsworth in signature high-speed fights
‘My childhood! My mother! I want them back!” With this howl of anguish, young Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, sets the tone of vengeful rage that runs through George Miller’s immersive, spectacular prequel to his Mad Max reboot from 2015. Once again, there are the crazily colossal and weird convoy-action sequences which fuse the notion of “chase” and “violent combat” into a series of delirious high-velocity contests between motorbikes, 18-wheelers and armed parascenders all attacking and shooting at each other while fanatically zooming in the same direction. The vehicles themselves are what makes the Mad Max movies so very strange. Many films are called “surreal”, but these strange, ritualistic gladiator-vehicle displays in the reddish-brown emptiness really do look like something by Giorgio de Chirico or Max Ernst.

Woman Thou Art Loosed: Miller Wades into the Wasteland
In all likelihood, George Miller presumably will be closing out his filmography the same way it began, fleshing out the iconic dystopian desert world he created back in 1979 with Mad Max and its original successive sequels. As fate would have it, a powerful figure rising out of his celebrated 2015 reboot, Mad Max: Fury Road, would get her own origin story in this universe, which arrives with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Strangely, much like Charlize Theron pulled focus over the titular Tom Hardy in the earlier film, Anya Taylor-Joy is the muted center of her own universe in this installment, thanks in part to a more vivacious, arguably more dynamic role for a new character portrayed by Chris Hemsworth.…...

When George Miller released "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 2015 (our review here), he completely revolutionized action films forever. The long-awaited fourth installment of his post-apocalyptic Ozploitation franchise, "Fury Road" was over three decades in the making, but before Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron ever pressed their boot leather to the gas pedal of a war rig — there was Miller's script for "Furiosa." Almost entirely written before production began on "Fury Road," Miller outlined a thrilling epic about the life of Imperator Furiosa before she crossed paths with "Mad" Max Rockatansky.
Now, Miller has brought that story to the big screen, a prequel to "Fury Road" and an immersive dive into the life story of one of cinema's greatest characters of the last 20 years. Thanks to the extensive behind-the-scenes oral history of "Fury Road," we know that Miller is a meticulous director who storyboards out his films within an inch of their life.

Cannes – At the very least, and no matter what your personal opinion of the end result, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is a reminder. A reminder to never, never, ever doubt the brilliance of George Miller’s cinematic eye. Almost 50 years since his feature film debut, the celebrated filmmaker continues to fashion images that find a way to burn themselves in your brain time and time again. It’s no surprise then, that Miller’s visual touch helps elevate his latest endeavor into more than just a prequel to 2015’s landmark achievement, “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Since their beginnings in 1979, George Miller’s hyper-jacked Mad Max movies with Mel Gibson had not received a single Oscar nomination, not even for Tina Turner’s great signature song “We Don’t Need Another Hero” in 1985’s Beyond Thunderdome. But then, 30 years later, when finally the fourth and Gibson-less edition appeared, the snooty Academy got on board and gave the newly regenerated Mad Max: Fury Road 10 nominations including for Best Picture and Director. It won six of them, virtually sweeping the crafts categories.
Nine years later comes a prequel, Furosia: A Mad Max Saga, and Miller, now seemingly ageless at 79 (he was 34 when the first one came out) has perhaps given birth to the greatest Max yet, a wheels-up, rock-and-rolling epic that delivers the origin story of the title character Charlize Theron picked up in Fury Road when she was about 26.
That movie only covered about three days total.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is releasing to theaters on May 24th, 2024 and we’re celebrating with a giveaway!
In 1979 Mel Gibson brought the character of Max Rockatansky to life with George Miller’s cult-classic film Mad Max. He would reprise the role in two follow-up films — Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome — before Tom Hardy took the reigns for the highly celebrated Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015.
The torch is passing once more; however, this time its for the character of Furiosa, first introduced in Mad Max: Fury Road and initially portrayed by Academy Award Winner Charlize Theron (Fast X). Anya Taylor-Joy (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) stars in the prequel spin-off with filmmaker George Miller returning to the world that he created for the first time in nearly a decade. Anya Taylor-Joy may play a vengeful warrior in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” but the actress also had to battle her way a bit creatively while on set for the sprawling epic.
Taylor-Joy told The New York Times that she had to fight to have her title character unleash a scream in the feature, helmed by George Miller.
“We’re animals, and there’s a point where somebody just snaps,” Taylor-Joy said. “There’s one scream in that movie, and I am not joking when I tell you that I fought for that scream for three months. I am a really strong advocate of female rage.”
Taylor-Joy explained how the character of Furiosa felt “real” to her, and almost like a friend she needed to protect. “I defend, to a fault, their interest,” she said of all of her roles, especially in the “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel.

George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will have some good commercial news at its back as it roars into its much-anticipated Cannes Film Festival premiere Wednesday night.
The Warner Bros. action tentpole has received censorship approval from Beijing regulators to get released in China, a source with knowledge of the decision tells The Hollywood Reporter. It will be the first film in the 45-year-old Mad Max movie franchise to open theatrically in the country, which is home to the world’s second-largest box office. Warner Bros. has applied for a June 7 release date for Furiosa, but the studio is still waiting for the final dating decision from China’s film regulators, according to THR‘s source.
Since the pandemic, Hollywood hits have been earning far less in China than they once did, as the country’s moviegoing youth have undergone a generational shift in taste towards domestic fare.

Filmmaker George Miller has made no bones about classic cinema’s influence on the Mad Max saga over the years. Iconic physical comedians like Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd are cited often as inspirations for the queasy death-defying stunts that Max Rockatansky or Imperator Furiosa get up to, including when we spoke with the writer-director. He even muses to us, “Buster Keaton would survive very well, actually” in the fabled Wasteland.
Perhaps so too then would the stars he selected to bring his most epic adventure yet on the Fury Road to life. "You're going to have to show me who you are." Let's rock!! It opens in theaters in just a few more weeks at the end of May. This action prequel tells the origin story of the renegade warrior Furiosa before she teamed up with Mad Max. It was shot again in Australia in 2022 and is ready to blow the lid off the summer movie season this year. It's rare to watch an actor's star rise in real-time, but that is precisely what is happening with Anya Taylor-Joy.
The actress has nary a single project in her resume that wasn't loved by critics and audiences alike, save for a big-budget script or two.
With barely an entire decade under her belt, Anya Taylor-Joy already has thirty-nine nominations, including fifteen wins, three of which are a Golden Globe, a Critic's Choice Aware, and a Screen Actor's Guild award.
Not too bad, considering she's not even thirty yet. She's made some significant moves and has quickly solidified herself as one of Hollywood's most talented young actors.
From protecting the Mushroom Kingdom to questionable fine dining, Anya Taylor-Joy has embarked on various roles. Whether it's just her voice or a full view of her stealing every scene with her piercing gaze, the actress has the skill of someone with decades of experience.

“Mad Max” mastermind George Miller considered using de-aging technology so that Charlize Theron could star in his “Fury Road” prequel “Furiosa,” but says “it would have been difficult” to pull off. Instead, he opted to cast someone new in the role of Imperator Furiosa: Anya Taylor-Joy.
In a Variety cover story on Taylor-Joy and “Furiosa,” which premieres on Wednesday night at Cannes Film Festival, Miller said he had observed de-aging used in movies like Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man” starring Will Smith.
“Both of them were masterful directors, but it was never persuasive,” Miller said of the technology. “I thought all people would be watching is Charlize looking young and knowing it’s an effect. And as time went on and we got into litigation with Warner Bros, we had to find someone younger.”

Alyla Browne may only be 14 years old, but in the short time she’s been acting she’s somehow managed to assemble one of the most ridiculously star-studded on-screen family trees.
In Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers,” she played Nicole Kidman’s daughter. In Amazon Studio’s “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” she was Sigourney Weaver’s granddaughter. Meanwhile, in George’s Miller’s fantasy “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” she appeared as a young Tilda Swinton.
But the fast-rising Australian is about to top all of that. In “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” she plays the Imperator Furiosa as a child, meaning she’s not just the young Anya Taylor-Joy, but the young Charlize Theron as well.
“It’s absolutely insane,” notes the teen, now juggling her studies with her first trip to Cannes for the world premiere of the one of the year’s most highly anticipated films.

Considering the overwhelming success and popularity of Mad Max: Fury Road, it was only a matter of time until a new installment would be ordered. Anya Taylor-Joy-led Furiosa is set for a May 24 premiere, and the final cut is ready — but for the star herself, even watching the rough cut proved unbearable. Why did Taylor-Joy find watching Furiosa “traumatizing?”
Filming Furiousa Was Hard on the Lead Star
The making of the Fury Road prequel was the toughest gig of Anya Taylor-Joy’s career so far. From the inhumane schedule of working from 1:45 am and forth to being covered in grime and isolated from civilization for months, Furiosa was extremely demanding on the actress, and it largely exhausted her in the process.
“You will not believe how dirty I had to be for it to read on camera… I looked like a creature from the Black Lagoon. I hadn...

George Miller keeps a photo on his phone. Taken somewhere in the ’70s, it’s a picture of Craig Hemsworth — back when the father of Chris Hemsworth hung out with the same gang of motorbike riders that appeared in the original “Mad Max.” He even knew Wonder Dog, that film’s cycle-riding canine. And of course, the younger Hemsworth is a dead ringer for his dad.
“[Chris] dug deep,” Miller told IndieWire of his “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” star. “He is highly considered on anything and everything, multi-dimensional. And he has wisdom. He is just 40. Now, at that age, if I only had half his understanding of the world at large, his place in it, the connection to family and the way he wants to conduct his life!”
We’re in Cannes and it’s the day before the festival’s out-of-competition world premiere of “Furiosa,” the fifth installment of his 45-year-old franchise.

Chris Hemsworth is no stranger when it comes to transforming himself for his films. Take his Fat Thor transformation, for example. While filming for Avengers: Endgame, the actor had to shoot in a fat suit that weighed anywhere between sixty to seventy pounds. On top of that, he had to wear layers and layers of clothing and stuff the sides of his mouth to make his cheeks look fuller.

As Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga gears up for its world premiere later this month, in a recent interview with The Telegraph, director George Miller reflected on the feud between stars of his first movie, Mad Max Fury Road, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.
George Miller’s Furiosa was critically hailed after the movie’s Australian premiere this week. The film, released a decade after 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road’s massive success, is a prequel to the post-apocalyptic franchise. Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead with Chris Hemsworth costarring in a villainous role.
Despite the success, the franchise has been marred by reports of a notorious on-set feud between the stars of the first movie, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy.

There’s a new villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ralph Ineson has been cast in the role of Galactus in the rebooted Fantastic Four film. The actor is the newest addition to the already star-studded lineup featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The Marvel fans could not get any more excited at the news because he is one of the most iconic characters in the Marvel comic book universe.

Even though fans are excited to witness the character’s debut, the cosmic being can overpower the strongest of heroes with ease. Anya Taylor-Joy says she spent months on George Miller’s Furiosa set without delivering any lines, filming wordless action sequences over and over and studiously — sometimes emotionally — analyzing her acting choices. The result, she adds, was so intense she is still processing the experience even two years after filming.
“I’ve never been more alone than making that movie,” she told the New York Times this week. “I don’t want to go too deep into it, but everything that I thought was going to be easy was hard.”
Miller’s new Mad Max entry sees Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa (taking over for Charlize Theron) and Chris Hemsworth as a devious warlord in a story that takes place 15 years before the previous film.

George Miller, the director of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is revisiting the on-set drama between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy in his 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road.
In a new interview, Miller recalled the feud between the stars during the film’s production, which resulted from Hardy’s tardiness.
“They were just two very different performers,” Miller told The Telegraph. “Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer. Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set.”
Miller noted that things on the set gradually got better, adding, “I’m an optimist, so I saw their behavior as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to cooperate in order to ensure mutual survival.

We’ve seen several high-profile directors take shots at Marvel movies over the years, including Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, but Chris Hemsworth isn’t standing for it.
While speaking with The Times, the Thor actor opened up about how it feels to hear such harsh criticism from filmmakers he looks up to. “It felt harsh, and it bothers me, especially from heroes. It was an eye-roll for me, people bashing the superhero space,” Hemsworth said. “Those guys had films that didn’t work too — we all have. When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought, cool, tell that to the billions who watch them. Were they all wrong?“
Hemsworth added, “Cinema-going did not change because of superheroes, but because of smartphones and social media. Superhero films actually kept people in the cinemas during that transition, and now people are coming back. So they deserve a little more appreciation.

Though the whole cinema’s concept originally boils down to the idea that the action itself is much more important than the words that accompany it, some modern directors seem to have perceived this idea quite literally.
It all started earlier this year when Denis Villeneuve expressed his hope for once seeing movies that would contain no words at all, stressing that he hates dialogue. The director later on made a U-turn admitting that the dialogue is still crucial, yet he seems to have accidentally started a whole new trend of removing all the lines from the films, and one more proclaimed director has joined the movement.

The director later on made a U-turn admitting that the dialogue is still crucial, yet he seems to have accidentally started a whole new trend of removing all the lines from the films, and one more proclaimed director has joined the movement.

In a new profile of “Furiosa” director George Miller published by The Telegraph, it’s revealed that Anya Taylor-Joy’s eponymous character only has around 30 lines of dialogue in the upcoming “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel movie. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to fans of the road warrior franchise, as Tom Hardy and Mel Gibson barely had much to say in Miller’s previous “Mad Max” movies. However, Taylor-Joy did push Miller to let Furiosa get loud in the new movie.
In an interview with The New York Times, Taylor-Joy said she would go “months” on the movie’s set without speaking a single line of dialogue. She added: “I’ve never been more alone than making that movie. I don’t want to go too deep into it, but everything that I thought was going to be easy was hard.”

The making of "Mad Max: Fury Road" is the stuff of legend, as chronicled in Kyle Buchanan's wildly entertaining book, "Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road." That being the case, it's only to be expected that the cast and crew of the new prequel film, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," would have some tall tales of their own to regale about what went into the making of director George Miller's return to the Wasteland. Doubly so for star Anya Taylor-Joy, who follows in Charlize Theron's footsteps by bringing the titular battle-hardened, shaved-headed, metal-armed, stoic post-apocalyptic warrior to life as a young woman in the movie.
Contrary to the nature of the "Mad Max" universe, Miller himself is renowned for running safe sets and has never been accused of abusing his actors or otherwise mistreating the members of his crews. The...

Anya Taylor-Joy is now one of the most promising actresses of the industry, proving her talent by the performances in the Netflix miniseries The Queen's Gambit (2020), the black comedy The Menu (2022) and the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
However, back in 2015, she debuted in a lesser known horror flick, which can be considered one of the best genre’s movies of the 2010s. Reddit still recalls how perfectly she fitted its suspenseful atmosphere, and how it kept them on the edge of their seats.
Set in New England of the 1630s, it focuses on a Puritan family encountering forces of evil reaching their farm. The first tragedy happening to them is the mysterious disappearance of the youngest son Samuel, who was stolen and killed by a witch.
The boy was watched by the oldest daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy), and she gets blamed by the whole family for the tragedy,...

Take a look at the custom chopped ‘motor beast’ vehicles from director George Miller’s upcoming action feature “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”, releasing May 24, 2024 in theaters:
Actress Anya Taylor-Joy didn’t have a driver’s license when she started filming the movie…
…but learned very fast from Australia’s best stunt drivers.
"The ‘Valiant’ was the first car that I drove in the movie," she said about one of several vehicles in the film.

It's no secret that Venom's Tom Hardy and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Charlize Theron clashed on the set of 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. However, there have long been conflicting reports about exactly why the actors struggled to get along.
Hardy's method approach to playing Max Rockatansky may have been one point of contention, as was his frequent lateness to set. That resulted in a heated confrontation which saw Theron call her co-star a "f***ing c***" before he squared up to her; the consequence of that was the Oscar-winner demanding she have a female producer on hand at all times.
They've both since acknowledged their respective failings, with Hardy admitting he could and should have done more to foster a healthier working relationship with his co-star.
It wasn't an easy process making the movie, anyway, and only time will tell whether any similar issues...

While promoting the new Garfield animated pic, Chris Pratt briefly touched on his past performance as the princess-saving Brooklyn plumber, Mario.
Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the 2023 animated Super Mario Bros. Movie was an unexpected blockbuster, as it went on to set the record for biggest global opening for an animated movie.
After everything was said and done, the movie made $1.362 billion globally on a meager $100 million production budget. That feat made The Super Mario Bros. Movie the most financially successful film of 2023, according to Deadline Hollywood.
A sequel was officially announced on March 10, 2024, as part of Mario Day celebrations and given an April 3, 2026 release date.
Speaking to Total Film, Pratt teased, "I can't tell you much but I can say that there is another Mario movie coming. It gets me very excited thinking about the world of Mario and Nintendo in general, I think over the next decade...
