Another week, another traumatic episode of a Shonda Rhimes show that centers around a vulnerable group.
On Station 19 Season 7 Episode 3, the firehouse fam attends a Pride parade to celebrate Seattle's LGBTQ+ community. For a full recap and review, check out TV Fanatic Jasmine Blu's expert take on True Colors!
During the Pride parade, a car backfires, the sound is mistaken for a gunshot, and chaos erupts. As painful as it is, this is an entirely predictable series of events because Shondaland loves to give marginalized communities a tragedy to rally around.
Don't get us wrong. We love this universe. Everything Shonda Rhimes touches turns to gold.
But we'd be remiss if we ignored the fact that sometimes it's hard to stomach some of the painful storylines vulnerable communities have to endure in the worlds she builds.
Looking back on the history of Shonda's television empire, it's clear that this isn't a new phenomenon.

Grey’s Anatomy has been renewed for its record-breaking 21st season. Although this may sound like good news, fans of the medical drama megahit are not happy. The fans feel as if the show has run its course and it is time for it to end. The stars of Grey’s Anatomy may feel the same way and it has been suggested the show start preparing for members of the cast to leave.
Shondaland Should Get Smaller
Fans of Grey’s Anatomy are over it. They no longer want the ABC medical drama, created by Shonda Wilson, to continue. Their reasons vary from fan to fan, but the consensus appears most of them will be willing to say to say goodbye to the show.
The debate about when Grey’s Anatomy “jumped the shark” has been up for debate for quite some time now. That debate is moot. The series has been renewed for another season.

We'll be old and gray before Grey's Anatomy ends!
Grey's Anatomy continues to make records and hold its own as a cultural juggernaut in the television landscape as it comes off 19 seasons on the air.
And while there has been a revolving door cast over the past nearly two decades, including the titular main character, Meredith Grey herself, it shows no signs of slowing down.
One of the most exciting aspects of Grey's Anatomy Season 19 is how the series found a way to reinvent itself.
It served as a reboot within the series, and the show pulled it off remarkably well with a fresh batch of interns who have already made their mark and feel like the next generation of this series.

Despite a recent wave of cast exits, Grey's Anatomy will continue on ABC into the 2023-24 TV season.
The network on Friday renewed Grey's Anatomy for an unprecedented Season 20.
As ABC's longest-running series, Grey's Anatomy has still commanded strong ratings, meaning that a renewal was inevitable.
Typically with longer-running shows, renewals are more complicated due to cast salaries.
But Grey's Anatomy has said goodbye to Ellen Pompeo as a series regular, while Kelly McCreary will depart next month.
Also exiting is Krista Vernoff, who has served as showrunner on the series.
Executive producer Meg Marinis will take the reigns of the series.
Marinis has a long and storied history with the series, having written more than 25 episodes and served as an executive producer.
Undoubtedly, a renewal for the series has been made more attractive with the cast exits.

We’re going to choose to look on the bright side when it comes to Scott Speedman’s status in Grey’s Anatomy Season 19, especially considering how things ended in the finale for Dr. Nick Marsh and Ellen Pompeo’s Dr. Meredith Grey. In the ever-changing TV landscape, one thing remains key for lasting scripted shows: powerful storytelling. And it’s nearly impossible to discuss that without highlighting “Grey’s Anatomy” — the longest-running primetime medical drama in history.
This month, the series created by Shonda Rhimes reaches a giant landmark. On May 26, the procedural will air its 400th episode, which also happens to be its Season 18 finale.
Since its March 2005 debut, “Grey’s Anatomy” has been a watercooler show — and may be one of the last standing, especially in network TV.
“Honestly, I can’t quite get my head around it,” says Krista Vernoff, who stepped in for Rhimes as showrunner in 2017. “I took a break in the middle of the run of the show. I wasn’t here seasons 8 through 13. I look around at the folks who have been here straight through for 400 episodes and my mind is just blown. We are proud. We...

Every time we think Grey's Anatomy is coming to an end, the series ekes out another renewal, securing its legacy as one of the longest-running dramas on television.
The hit ABC medical drama recently shot its 400th episode, and the cast opened up to People about their thoughts on the conclusion.
"We have thought of so many endings and they were like, 'Nope, that's not it,'" Chandra Wilson, who has played Dr. Miranda Bailey told the outlet.
"That's not going to end. And all of the scenarios ... We played them as if it's going to end," she continued. "So I'm not thinking of it anymore. Not going to do it!"
"I don't know how this show ends at this point," added Kevin McKidd, who plays Dr. Owen Hunt.
"We all thought this season was going to be the end. I felt we were all building towards it, this season.

Skylar Astin — late of “Pitch Perfect,” and recently a star of “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” — has joined the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” in a recurring role. His arc will begin later this month, in the March 24 episode titled “Put the Squeeze on Me.”
According to representatives from ABC, Astin will play Todd Eames, and they provided a logline for the character: “Charming and handsome with a gentle soul, Eames holds a PhD in environmental sciences and loves a good spreadsheet. He is close with his sister, who is a pregnant patient at Grey Sloan Memorial.” Will he be a potential love interest for Ob-gyn resident Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), who so recently consummated a long-brewing will-they-or-won’t-they situation with her best friend Link (Chris Carmack)? Who can say! ABC reps were mum on the matter.
Astin first came to prominence as a musical theater actor, in the role of Georg in “Spring Awakening.

Grey’s Anatomy‘s record-breaking run will continue — with its leading lady Ellen Pompeo. ABC has renewed Shondaland’s hugely popular medical drama for a 19th season, and Pompeo has signed a new one-year deal to continue as the show’s title character, Meredith Grey. Pompeo also has been upped from co-executive producer to executive producer for Season 19. Fellow executive producer Krista Vernoff will remain at the helm of the series as showrunner.
Just like it did at the time of the Season 18 renewal in May 2021, ABC is not designating Season 19 as a final one for the show or its star Pompeo — for now.
Deadline revealed last month that renewal talks between ABC and producing studio ABC Signature were underway for a potential 19th season of Grey’s Anatomy and that Pompeo also had been approached about staying on the show for another season. Grey's Anatomy has just a handful of episodes remaining in its current season.
The series, which remains ABC's top-rated scripted series in the demo, has yet to be renewed or canceled.
Fans have been waiting with bated breaths for word on the future of the Ellen Pompeo-led medical drama.
For its part, ABC has only just started renewing scripted series, with The Good Doctor Season 5 and Big Sky Season 2 confirmed for the 2021-22 TV schedule.
Pompeo has been vocal about this potentially being the end of the road.
"I can't say. Can't say," Pompeo said recently on CBS Sunday Morning.
"We honestly have not decided. We're really trying to figure it out right now," before adding that she wants to do justice to the series with a big ending.
"It's, what story do we tell? To end a show this iconic, you know, how do we do it?" she added.

Grey's Anatomy Season 17 is the season of the comeback.
Camilla Luddington, who plays Jo Wilson, is teasing fans with even more big returns before the season wraps later this year.
Ever since Grey's Anatomy Season 17 Episode 1, multiple beloved characters have returned to the series.
We've had T.R. Knight as George O'Malley and Patrick Dempsey as Derek Shepherd.
Grey's Anatomy Season 17 Episode 10 will also welcome back Chyler Leigh as Lexie Grey.
Granted, the big returns have been during Meredith's Covid-19 beach dream-like setting, but the series will switch things up in the back half of the season.
As previously reported, Sarah Drew will return as April Kepner for one episode. Based on behind-the-scenes photos, her return looks to be a storyline involving her ex-husband, Jackson.

Grey's Anatomy finally returned for its 17th season last week.
As the first season produced with strict Covid-19 prevention protocols in place, there were some big changes.
For a start, the series addressed the pandemic during its two-hour premiere.
One viewer, however, took issue with the cast personal protective equipment amid the pandemic that has left nationwide shortages.
“A disposable mask will work just fine,” the Twitter user wrote.
Camilla Luddington, who plays Jo Wilson on the series, quickly chimed in with her thoughts on the matter.
“If you see any of us wearing KN95s behind the scenes it’s because we are wearing our costume masks. We don’t also get an extra KN95 to wear between takes,” she responded via Twitter.
Grey's Anatomy Season 17 production kicked off in September and the series is set to air through December 17, and wrap with a fall finale after its sixth episode.

Exclusive: Grey’s Anatomy‘s main cast will remain intact heading into Season 17. Kim Raver, Camilla Luddington and Kevin McKidd, whose contracts were all up at the end of last season, have signed new multi-year contracts to continue on the long-running medical drama, I have learned. I hear the pacts are for three years, indicating that ABC and Grey’s Anatomy producer ABC Studios are looking to extend the blockbuster medical drama beyond its upcoming, record-breaking 17th season.
Grey’s Anatomy is in the middle of a two-year pickup which also includes a two-year deal for star Ellen Pompeo, expiring at the end of Season 17. The new contracts for McKidd, Raver and Luddington, which I hear come with significant salary bumps, would carry them past next May should Grey’s be renewed for an 18th season.
ABC brass certainly hope that would be the case.

Grey's Anatomy actress Camilla Luddington came close to playing a pivotal role on The Vampire Diaries, and it would have stopped her from playing Jo Wilson.
Luddington took to Twitter over the weekend to reveal characters she had auditioned for in the past, and one of them was Rebekah Mikaelson on The Vampire Diaries.
Claire Holt ultimately landed the role and also went on to star in New Orleans-set spinoff The Originals.
"Was reminiscing with my husband about some roles we auditioned for (over a decade ago) and didn't get," Luddington tweeted. "I was thinking it might be fun to share just a couple ha!!!!
"I auditioned for (and Obvs didn't get but thought it would be so fun to play) Rebekah on #TheVampireDiaries."
Fans were shocked, with one suggesting that Luddington wouldn't have been cast in Grey's Anatomy had she been successful in auditioning for Vampire Diaries, prompting the...

Grey's Anatomy said goodbye to Justin Chambers' Alex Karev earlier this year as the character reunited with his ex-wife Izzie.
While fans thought it meant that things were about to go downhill for Alex's soon-to-be ex-wife, Jo Wilson, the character picked up the pieces in quick succession.
If you watch Grey's Anatomy online, you know Alex dumped Jo via a letter, which also revealed he was back together with his ex.
It was a surprising direction to travel for the series, and showrunner Krista Vernoff is now opening up about it.
The reason makes sense, and it's because Vernoff did not want to put "anyone through" another difficult Jo arc.
"[Camilla] had so beautifully gone through many months of very dark storytelling, and I didn't want any of us to watch Jo go into a hole again," she explained to TV Line, conceding that Jo had probably already grieved her marriage with Karev anyway.

It's the big day for Teddy and Owen, but it looks like it will not be going off without a hitch.
Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 21 -- the premature season finale -- will attempt to bring things full circle for Teddy and Owen.
However, Tom seems like he doesn't want the wedding to go ahead. If you watch Grey's Anatomy online, you know that would make sense.
Tom is madly in love with Teddy and the pair have been having an affair of late.
However, Teddy decided on Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 20 that Owen was the man for her, and asked him if they could rush the wedding.
In the latest sneak peek from ABC, Owen and Tom are bickering because Tom has yet to approve Owen's time off, claiming that he didn't think it was urgent.
Teddy tries to play the expedited wedding off as a small gathering of family in the backyard.

Are you ready for the Grey's Anatomy season finale?
Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 21 is serving as an early endpoint for the current season, thanks to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
While it was not supposed to be the end, it sure seems like there will be enough drama to tide fans over until the series returns for Season 17.
Titled "Put on a Happy Face," the installment looks set to bring many storylines to a head.
Teddy will be forced to face up to her deceit as her wedding to Owen looms, but Tom steps in and pleads with her to make the right decision.
If you watch Grey's Anatomy online, you know Teddy has been cheating on Owen with Tom, and has been wondering what to do for some time.

The fight is on to diagnose and save Richard on Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 20, airing tonight at 9/8c on ABC.
While Maggie, Meredith, and Amelia work together to run tests on Weber, Maggie is checking out the headlines following Richard's claim that he had a cure for cancer.
The internet is ablaze with memes of Richard, as well as negative headlines that make him sound like a conspiracy theorist, according to a new sneak peek of the episode.
"Famous surgeon implodes at medical conference," says one headline, while another says:
"Medical meltdown of the year."
"It doesn't stop," a defeated Maggie says.
Unfortunately, it also looks like the nightmare will have much more far-reaching consequences.
"Catherine's on the phone with the foundation publicist to try to scrub it all from the internet which isn't really possible," says Meredith chiming in.
Catherine probably feels guilty because she thought Richard was drunk at the event,...
