After being cancelled by Disney+ earlier this year, Nautilus has found a new home at AMC.
The Captain Nemo origin series had already finished shooting, but Disney dropped the series nonetheless as a cost-cutting measure. As stated by CFO Christine McCarthy, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation…As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.” Nautilus will air on AMC as well as AMC+ sometime next year.

The House of Mouse has shut its door in the face of two upcoming Disney+ series, as both Nautilus and The Spiderwick Chronicles have removed from their upcoming slate of programming. Both series, which had already concluded filming, are now being shopped to other studios.
As reported by Deadline, the move to ax both Nautilus and The Spiderwick Chronicles comes as Disney+ is looking to cut some serious costs. As previously stated by CFO Christine McCarthy, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation…As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.” This aligns with the studio removing such titles as Willow, Y: The Last Man and dozens of others from Disney+.

Disney+ users won’t get to see a TV adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles after all. The streaming platform is ditching the live-action series, even though an eight-episode season has already finished filming. The decision not to stream The Spiderwick Chronicles is part of a content write-off Disney announced in May, according to Deadline, which first reported the cancellation. “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation,” Christine McCarthy, then Disney’s CFO, explained at the time. “As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.” In addition, Disney Branded Television is beginning to focus more on Disney’s own intellectual property instead of non-Disney IP like Spiderwick, Deadline reports. Disney announced The Spiderwick Chronicles, an adaptation...

Well, this is a bummer.
Disney+ has pulled the plug on its TV adaptation of the Spiderwick Chronicles.
Deadline shared the unfortunate news over the weekend, revealing that all eight episodes had been completed prior to the decision.
That means the show will become like the countless projects scrapped by streaming networks this year, including the Batgirl movie.
The move comes as Disney+ reevaluates its streaming strategy, and Deadline revealed that the series is part of the content write-off announced in May.
Disney+ recently purged countless original series and movies from its platform, including the Willow sequel series.
“We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation,” Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said at the time.

Exclusive: Amid a focus on content curation and Disney-owned IP, Disney+ is not proceeding with The Spiderwick Chronicles, its live-action series adaptation of the popular children’s fantasy books, Deadline has learned.
The eight-episode series, from Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, has been completed. It is currently being shopped by Paramount to other potential buyers.
The decision comes as Disney — along with other media companies — have been reevaluating their streaming strategies by cutting programming costs with a renewed focus on profitability. It is part of the major content write-off announced by Disney in May, I hear.

Update, July 4: Another victim of Disney’s cost-cutting on the streaming front has emerged: “Crater,” a sci-fi adventure film about a group of children that hijack a rover before a member of the group relocates to a new planet. The film, starring Mckenna Grace and Isaiah Russell-Bailey with a featured role played by Kid Cudi, drew mostly positive reviews around its debut on the streaming service on May 12. Roughly seven weeks later, “Crater” has been pulled from Disney+.
The original report follows.
Disney’s content culling from Disney+ and Hulu is coming as early as next week — with the media company pulling off more than 50 titles, including series “Willow,” “The Mysterious Benedict Society” and “Dollface,” and movies such as “The One and Only Ivan.”
