Neon and Waypoint have struck a strategic financial partnership to collaborate on a theatrical slate of “bold, genre-spanning”larger independent features.
The non-exclusive pact sees Waypoint, led by Ken Kao, invest in the slate after the partners worked together on Tilman Singer’s Cuckoo, which premiered in Berlinale Special gala last month.

Neon has formed a strategic financial partnership with Ken Kao’s Waypoint Entertainment, the full-service production company behind The Favourite and The Nice Guys, to deliver a slate “of bold, genre-spanning films for savvy theatrical audiences,” the distributor said. The partners will focus on larger indies in the $10+ million range.
Neon said the investment will expand its production and distribution arms. A non-exclusive venture, it comes after Neon and Waypoint’s recent collaboration on Tilman Singer’s Cuckoo starring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens, which debuted in the U.S. at SXSW following its world premiere in Berlin last month. Neon will release Cuckoo in theaters this spring.
There were no details of Waypoint’s financial commitment or the number of films contemplated. Neon, led by Tom Quinn, said further details on the slate will be announced in the near future.

Neon, the studio that backed Oscar-winners “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Parasite,” has ironed out a deal with Waypoint Entertainment, the production company behind “The Favourite” and “The Nice Guys,” to bring more mid-budget movies to the big screen.
The deal follows the company’s collaboration on the Hunter Schafer-led horror movie “Cuckoo,” which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and SXSW. Waypoint’s investment will allow Neon to expand its production and distribution efforts, something it’s been attempting to do since the New York-based distributor explored a sale in 2022 as a way to grow its business. Though a deal with investor Steven Rales, the wealthy businessman who founded the production company Indian Paintbrush, never came to fruition, Neon has managed to bolster its footprint. It recently launched an international sales division to handle the global distribution of its films.

FX’s Mayans M.C. season five episode six begins with the Reyes brothers (separately) starting their days. Ez’s body is black and blue, and he dresses silently so as not to wake Sofia. Angel (Clayton Cardenas) emerges from trying to wash the weight of the world off of his shoulders in the shower and picks up his young son, telling Maverick it’s just the two of them as Adelita continues to sleep.
Angel makes toast for breakfast while holding Maverick. At the same time, Ez (Jd Pardo) gets into his truck and places a loaded gun on the passenger seat.
A quick pan around the clubhouse and yard shows that not a creature is stirring other than a fly buzzing around the bar. There’s an uneasy, ominous vibe to the opening minutes...

Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, will be screening at the Sundance Film Festival in January – and our own Chris Bumbray will be in attendance for that screening, so watch for his review to show up soon after. The first image from Infinity Pool was unveiled on the festival’s official website yesterday, and now a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above… and before you do, prepare to be weirded out.
Cronenberg wrote the screenplay for Infinity Pool, as he did for his two previous feature films, Possessor and Antiviral. This time, he’s telling the following story: James and Em are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation when a fatal accident exposes the resort’s perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence, and surreal horrors.

Four weeks ago, we heard that Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg, had been slapped with an Nc-17 by the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. The reason given for that rating was “some graphic violence and sexual content”. The ratings announcement came with the note that the makers of Infinity Pool intend to appealed to the Classification and Rating Administration appeals board in an attempt to get the Nc-17 turned into an R. And apparently that appeal didn’t go their way, because it has now been announced that Infinity Pool was edited in order to receive an R rating.
The new rating announcement says that Infinity Pool was been rated R for “graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and some language.” Which makes it sound even harsher than the Nc-17 cut.

As we told you last month, Antiviral and Possessor director Brandon Cronenberg‘s next is the sci-fi movie Infinity Pool for Neon and Topic Studios, which received an “Nc-17” rating from the MPA for “Some graphic violence and sexual content.” We also told you that an appeal was underway, and this week the MPA has finally handed the film an “R” rating.
The film’s previous “Nc-17” rating has been voided and the film has been re-edited a bit to achieve the “R” rating. This edited version of Infinity Pool has been rated “R” for…
“Graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and some language.”
The good news? It sounds like the film will remain violent and boundary-pushing!
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Over a year has gone by since we heard that Alexander Skarsgard (Godzilla vs. Kong) would be starring in Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg. Infinity Pool, which also stars Mia Goth – who Ti West is working on turning into a genre icon with his X, Pearl, and MaXXXine trilogy – has since made its way through production, and was recently screened for the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. And that screening didn’t go the way Cronenberg and distributor Neon were hoping it would. The ratings board has slapped Infinity Pool with an Nc-17 rating for “some graphic violence and sexual content”.
The ratings announcement on FilmRatings.com comes with the note that the makers of Infinity Pool intend to appeal to the Classification and Rating Administration appeals board in an attempt to get the Nc-17 turned into an R.

Alexander Skarsgård will star in Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” a sci-fi thriller about a vacation that takes a twist.
Neon, the studio behind “Parasite,” will co-finance and executive produce the film alongside Topic Studios, which previously produced “Leave No Trace” and “Luce.” “Infinity Pool” comes on the heels of Skarsgård’s star turn in “Godzilla vs. Kong,” one of the few box office success stories of the pandemic era. Cronenberg recently directed the trippy horror film, “Possessor,” which Neon released.
Here’s the official logline for “Infinity Pool”: “James and Em are young, rich, in love, and on vacation. Their all-inclusive resort boasts island tours and gleaming beaches. If this film thing doesn't work out, Johnny Depp has a sure future as musical sideman. Depp, 51, showcased his considerable guitar skills recently when he stepped out of the wings during a Ryan Adams show at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire to join the rocker on two songs, locking up a pretty mean guitar solo on his tune "Kim" and a cover of Danzig's "Mother." The hat-wearing actor was well-received. He was met with chants of "Johnny, Johnny," as he left the stage amid cheers after his musical turn. Adams thanked the actor for his contribution, calling him "J-Dizzle," according to a concertgoer.
