One year after the landmark success for Best Picture winner “Coda” at the Academy Awards, the 2023 Oscars presented the latest opportunity for Hollywood to show the world where it stands on inclusion and diversity.
On Oscars night, through a combination of memorable moments and inclusive components of the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences demonstrated its growing commitment to embracing inclusion and accessibility for all.
For the second time, a free Asl livestream was available on the Academy’s YouTube channel. The livestream was updated this year to enhance accessibility for viewers. On the red carpet, a team of Asl interpreters helped participants more effectively engage with fans and viewers at home, with members of the media receiving guidelines on how to make their pre-show coverage more accessible. Meanwhile, stage accessibility included not only ramp access but a stage wheelchair lift for the first time as well.

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

It’s been a year of change for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has responded not only to the pandemic, pushing back the global ABC Oscars telecast from February 28 to April 25, 2021 — setting a new award season calendar as other award shows have followed suit — but the urgency of the Black Lives Matter movement.
In its continuing push to swell the Academy membership ranks, 819 artists and executives from 68 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to become Academy members, but the Board of Governors makes the final call. People from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities (36 percent) and women (45 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members (49 percent) also come from overseas.

“The Peanut Butter Falcon” is one of the most underseen, acclaimed films of the last year. The film stars Dakota Johnson, Shia Labeouf, and Zack Gottsagen and might very well be the most heart-warming, sweet film of 2019. And that is due, in large part, to the filmmaking duo of Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz. Now, it appears that the duo is aiming to replicate that success with their upcoming comedy series, “The Wildest Animals in Griffith Park.”

Activist Jay Ruderman on March 3 presented an award to brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly for their decades of championing people with disabilities, saying show business “has the power to change public perception like no other industry.”
The occasion was the sixth annual Morton E. Ruderman Award for Inclusion, presented by the Ruderman Family Foundation and held at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills.
Onstage, Jay Ruderman pointed out that U.S. unemployment is now 4%, but people with disabilities have 70% unemployment, despite being an estimated 20% of the population. The Farrelly brothers have cast people both in front of and behind the camera since their second film, the 1996 “Kingpin.”
Bobby Farrelly said, “Whatever we’ve given to the disability community, they’ve given us a lot more back.” Peter Farrelly exploded two prevalent myths: “That they will slow you down and cost you money. It’s just the opposite,” saying people with...

The Ruderman Foundation, which promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities in all areas, presented the Morton E. Ruderman Award in inclusion to directing duo Peter and Bobby Farrelly Tuesday night at a star-packed presentation in Beverly Hills, CA.
The Farrelly Brothers were given the award “in recognition of their advocacy for the inclusive and authentic representation of people with disabilities in the entertainment industry.” The pair have regularly included actual disabled performers in their feature films, such as their 1998 comedy “There’s Something About Mary” and the 2001 film “Shallow Hal.” Peter Farrelly won two Academy Awards in 2019 as producer and co-screenwriter of “Green Book.”
Disability remains one of the more ignored elements of representation in media, this in spite the Ruderman Foundation’s research announcing that over 20 percent of the top characters in television with disabilities are actually played by disabled performers, an increase from 5 percent in 2016. Last week’s Oscars saw a very silly mini-controversy arise online after The Peanut Butter Falcon duo Shia Labeouf and Zack Gottsagen presented the award for Best Live Action short. Their appearance was notable because it made Gottsagen the first person with Down Syndrome to present an Academy Award.
Of course, Labeouf and Gottsagen’s friendship has been evident both in the film and on the press tour, right down to them spending time posing for pictures together on the red carpet just prior to the event. But when they delivered the award together, some took exception to Labeouf appearing to laugh at Gottsagen’s delivery. Folks dashed to social media, claiming that Shia “literally laughed at the kid with special needs”, that what he did was “distasteful” and that he should now be officially cancelled, among many other things.

2019 saw Shia Labeouf have a successful cinematic comeback after his personal and professional life have been plagued with controversy and brokenness for some time.
This past year, the actor re-emerged into Hollywood afresh with such celebrated productions as The Peanut Butter Falcon and Honey Boy, the latter of which is based on Labeouf’s own experiences. In Falcon, though, he portrayed Tyler, who’s down on his luck, haunted by his past and discouraged by his present. He eventually meets Zak, a young man with Down syndrome who wants to pursue his dreams and is played by Zack Gottsagen.
Gottsagen, who has Down syndrome himself, spent a lot of quality time with Labeouf while both filming The Peanut Butter Falcon and after the feature’s debut. They were really supportive of one another, too, as Labeouf has explained that Gottsagen helped him through a rough time, and he, in turn,...

Zack Gottsagen appeared with The Peanut Butter Falcon co-star Shia Labeouf at the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday to present the award for Best Live Action Short. In the process, they made history, with Gottsagen becoming the first person with Down Syndrome to present an award at the Oscars. And for most, this was a moment to celebrate.

Shia Labeouf made headlines on Sunday night. At the 2020 Oscars, the Peanut Butter Falcon star took to the stage with his co-star Zack Gottsagen to present the award for Best Live-Action Short Prize. Making the duo's appearance even more special? Zach received a standing ovation at the Dolby Theatre, and considering he made history as the first presenter with Down Syndrome at the ceremony, it was much-deserved. Early on in the Oscars telecast, Steve Martin and Chris Rock took the stage at the hostless ceremony and started riffing on a melange of topics. After spending a bit of time taking some playful jabs at Amazon’s Jeff Bezos who was in the audience, they pivoted towards the topic of diversity this year.
“Chris, I thought there was something missing from the list this year,” Martin said in regards to nominations — specifically the director’s category.
Rock responded, “Vaginas?”
“Yeah!” they said. This was of course, in reference to the lack of recognition of female filmmakers in the Best Directing category.
At one point Rock and Martin gave a shout out to Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo, who was the lone person of color nominated in an acting category. Rock added that Erivo “did such a great job hiding black people in Harriet that the Academy got her to hide all the black nominees!

The look, Chanel said in a press release, was inspired by their Spring-Summer 1995 Haute Couture collection.

‘Midway.’
Roland Emmerich’s last highly profitable blockbuster – 2012 in 2009 – must seem like a distant memory for the German-born director as his latest effort, Midway, had an inglorious debut in Australian cinemas last weekend.
By contrast, Terrence Malick has only ever had one break-out hit, The Thin Red Line in 1998, and his new film A Hidden Life is another dud, following Song to Song and Knight of Cups.
The weekend’s other new wide release, Sony Pictures’ second reboot of Japanese horror franchise The Grudge, flopped, mirroring its Us fate. Among the specialised titles, Rialto’s The Peanut Butter Falcon and Icon’s Seberg had minimal impact.
The top 20 titles clocked $13.5 million, 26 per cent down on the previous frame, according to Numero.
Sony’s juggernaut Bad Boys for Life reigned again, nabbing $2.1 million in its third outing, hoisting the total to $14.6 million. The cop caper starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence,...
