Some big changes will be in store when S.W.A.T. returns for its seventh and final season later this month.
With the show preparing to end the storylines of all the characters we’ve grown to love over the years, some won’t even make it to the series finale.
TV Line reports that original cast members Kenneth “Kenny” Johnson (who plays Dominique Luca) and Alex Russell (Jim Street) have been demoted to recurring players for S.W.A.T. Season 7.
While the decision is a shocker because they’ve both been with the show since its 2017 launch, there is a reason for them getting pre-series finale departures.
Series showrunner Andrew Dettmann told the outlet that he decided that due to the truncated 13-episode order. It allowed the creatives to give them episodes “focused on their characters and the evolution of their storylines.”

Viewers were upset about Friday's cancellation of Swat and CBS was listening. The network has now reversed its decision and renewed the drama for a seventh and final season.
A police action drama series, the Swat TV show stars Shemar Moore, Alex Russell, Jay Harrington, Kenny Johnson, David Lim, and Patrick St. Esprit. The crime thriller centers on Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Moore), a Los Angeles native and former Marine who’s been tapped to lead a new “last stop” Special Weapons And Tactics unit (S.W.A.T.). The rest of the team includes seasoned David “Deacon” Kay (Harrington), cocky Jim Street (Russell), expert driver Dominique Luca (Johnson), and informant-connected Victor Tan (Lim). Commander Robert Hicks (St. Esprit), a senior LAPD official with the Special Operations Bureau, is responsible for managing all Metro Division S.W.A.T. units.

“S.W.A.T” has been renewed for Season 7 at CBS, which will also be the show’s last. The move marks a stunning reversal of the network’s decision to cancel the show just three days ago.
According to sources, talks continued between CBS and series co-producer Sony Pictures Television over the weekend following the cancellation announcement. The show has been a solid performer for CBS in its Friday night timeslot, with the decision ultimately coming down to the show’s financials. In addition to the renewal, series star Shemar Moore will serve as an executive producer on the final season.
“We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for ‘S.W.A.T.’ and we have reached an agreement to renew it for a final season of 13 episodes to air during the 2023-2024 broadcast year,” said CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach and Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope in a joint statement.

TV Police dramas like Blue Bloods are growing long in the tooth in the CBS primetime lineup. S.W.A.T. came out of the gate as a strong contender to keep the network’s drama slate strong if older series like NCIS would eventually reach their natural conclusions. Six seasons in, S.W.A.T. has long since proved its ability to endure.
Or has it? Competition on the network has become more fierce than ever. Older shows are sticking around longer than expected. New shows, including revivals of older series like C.S.I., are filling out the lineup. Is there room for S.W.A.T. in the future CBS primetime slate?

Jonathan Davino Later, Hondo and his pregnant girlfriend Nichelle (Rochelle Aytes) head north to Chiang Mai for a babymoon with his old military friend Joe, who works for the U.N. drug interdiction program. “It spirals into a dangerous situation [with the drug trade],” Dettmann reveals. Ahead of the November Season 1 premiere, David Lim (Quantico) has been promoted to series regular on CBS drama series S.W.A.T.
Lim plays Victor Tan, a relatively new S.W.A.T. officer who made his name in the Hollywood division before advancing to the heights of the LAPD and Metro S.W.A.T. Tan has a nose for action and a willingness to place a bet on anything. He uses his confidential informants in the community to help Hondo (Shemar Moore) and the rest of their team capture the city’s toughest criminals.
“A couple weeks before shooting began, our pilot director Justin Lin felt the S.W.A.T. team needed one more member to feel complete. Justin, Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and I remembered David Lim, who had really impressed us in an audition for a different role. We quickly created the role of Victor Tan and were lucky enough to cast David,...
