For “Hacks” co-creator, writer, director and co-star Paul W. Downs, Season 3 of the Emmy Award-winning series offered the chance for a new honorific: series regular. Downs and his frequent scene partner Meg Stalter were upped to full-time cast members for the Season 3 episodes, as their characters – respectively, talent manager Jimmy and his loyal assistant Kayla – became more integrated into the show’s story.
“I had to go method. I had to really be booking things for Jean Smart,” Downs jokes during a recent exclusive video interview with Gold Derby about the status change.
Co-created by Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, the third season of “Hacks” focuses primarily on the contentious and often fruitful relationship between the legendary comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) and her former comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) as they reconnect and work toward Deborah’s ultimate goal of hosting a late-night show. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Hacks Season 3, Episode 6, “Par for the Course.”] Hacks welcomed a handful of glitzy guest stars in its latest Season 3 episode, “Par for the Course” as Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) attended the American Television Affiliates Golf Tournament as their campaign for late night continues. Hoping to schmooze the affiliates who could help her land the gig, Deborah is particularly taken with Bob Lipka (Tony Goldwyn), the CEO of the conglomerate that owns the network Deborah’s show would be on. Turning her attention mostly to him, she dumbs down her golf game to let him win and does all she can to sway things her way, but when she learns that Jack Danby (Luke Cook) is poised to take the late night host gig, she drops the facade and lets Bob get a taste of her real golf game. “She gets very thorny and kicks my ass on the golf course,...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for the sixth episode of “Hacks” Season 3.
Season 3 of “Hacks” began with Ava (Hannah Einbinder) finally feeling happy in both her career and her love life, but of course, the stability didn’t last. After Ruby (Lorenza Izzo) dumps Ava for restarting her toxic working relationship with Deborah (Jean Smart), Ava badly needs a win, which she gets in the form of a hot, older rebound — until everything goes to shit yet again.
In Episode 6, “Par for the Course,” Ava accompanies Deborah to a golf tournament where they’ll schmooze with network bigwigs as they continue trying to land Deborah the late night hosting gig she’s coveted for decades. After Deborah points out that Ava isn’t as “of the people” as she thinks she is, never having worked a service industry job before, she agrees to act as Deborah’s caddy for the weekend.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we wonder if some old faves can over-perform in comedy.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to laugh again about this year’s Emmys comedy race. This has remained a pretty stable race, so much so that not even FX seems concerned about “The Bear” and its status as the obvious frontrunner. The third season of the show comes back on June 27, after Emmy nominations voting has closed and well before final voting begins. It seems like Season 2 of “The Bear” is so far out in front that it might not even need Season 3 to goose its win potential. That’s maybe bad news for our beloved “Hacks,” which always faced an uphill battle in Best Comedy Series but...

We may have had to wait two years for the third season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” to hit our screens but, boy, was it worth it. Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

Upfront week’s reliance on films isn’t actually new but it is increasingly bizarre, as evidenced by the top of Wednesday morning’s Warner Bros. Discovery presentation kicking off with sizzle that prioritized features Furiosa, Dune: Part Two and Wonka — when new episodes of the HBO and Max’s flagship Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, are just weeks away.
But the opening frames proved to be relatively misleading, as the 90-minute (notably David Zaslav free) pitch to advertisers focused almost exclusively on … advertising. And on linear TV, at that. Film was referenced, of course, but as a vehicle to get Procter & Gamble’s Olay in on the Barbie phenomenon. Ad sales execs literally offered up James Gunn’s first project of the new DC era to the room full of media buyers, asking who wants sponsorship deals ahead of its planned 2025 release: “Do you want to be in Superman?...

Hacks star Hannah Einbinder is opening up about how the significant impact that starting and stopping the Adhd medication Adderall had on her comedic abilities, and how, until very recently and despite accumulating multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, she dealt with imposter syndrome.
The 28-year-old comedian reflected on her life and career during a recording of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast at Chapman University’s film school, from which she graduated in 2017.
“[This is] probably the number one worst group of people to be anti this thing, too,” Einbinder joked with the crowd, “but I had a bad experience with Adderall.” She shared that she has Adhd and took a “high prescription of Adderall” throughout high school, but that something felt off. “For many years, I felt like it kind of zombified me and took away my spark and stopped me from being present in my experience.”

Hannah Einbinder, the stand-up comedian and twice Emmy-nominated and twice Golden Globe-nominated star of Max’s Hacks, is the guest on this week’s episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, from which Einbinder herself graduated in 2017.
Over the course of the conversation, the 28-year-old reflects on growing up as the daughter of funny people (her mother, Laraine Newman, was a member of the original Saturday Night Live cast, and her father is Chad Einbinder, a comedy writer and director); how she was changed by going on and then — just as she was getting into stand-up comedy — getting off of Adderall; and, as her first-ever acting gig, landing the role of comedy writer Ava opposite the legendary Jean Smart’s Deborah on Hacks, which is now rolling out its third season.

The hit Max series “Hacks” is back for its third season after an extended hiatus, once again mining the struggles of an aging comedienne and a young, developing writer for chuckles and heart. Winning multiple awards for its previous seasons, the show can claim a strong degree of authority on what is and isn’t funny and that extends to the series’ two leads, Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. With the state of comedy and what is permissible remaining an evergreen conversation, Einbinder reiterated her previously stated opinion in a recirculated red carpet interview with Refinery29.
“You can say anything,” Einbinder said, then added, “you just have to be a good joke writer. And you have to be smart. You can’t just be a bigot and racist and homophobic and transphobic. Or actually, you can and you’ll have a wonderful career. ‘Cause a lot of people will come out and support that.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Hacks Season 3, Episode 3, “The Roast of Deborah Vance.”] Hacks explored the familiar world of comedy roasts in one of its latest episodes, appropriately titled, “The Roast of Deborah Vance,” and stepping up to the plate for the big event was Deborah’s (Jean Smart) daughter DJ (Kaitlin Olson). Not a stand-up in the slightest, DJ relies on the concept of a catchphrase to garner laughter from the audience, and despite initial doubts from Ava (Hannah Einbinder), the phrase becomes a hit when she takes to the stage. The catchphrase in question, is, “What a c**t?” This echoes DJ’s complicated feelings toward Deborah who attends an AA meeting with her as she celebrates an encouraging milestone. Max But unlike DJ who has risen to the occasion of preparing material for the roast, Deborah’s appearance at the AA meeting is half-hearted as she asks Ava to write her a...

Makeup design doesn’t always mean prosthetics or extremes — that’s why the Emmy Awards smartly single out contemporary makeup design as its own category. But too often, those more immediately arresting designs are the ones that get all the attention. Not anymore. Join IndieWire in celebrating the makeup artists creating subtle, character-specific work for contemporary shows.
“Hacks” is a show of contrasts, and that tells in the makeup design, too. Part of the joy of the three-season sparring match between Vegas standup stalwart Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and L.A. comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) is how different they are. Their makeup reflects this. Deborah requires a base level of glam before she considers herself fully dressed, while Ava, representing smart girls everywhere who grew up post-Title IX, actively repels the idea of cultivating a look. “Hacks” opened its first episode of its first season with a bravura tracking shot that followed its stand-up star Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) from door to casino floor to backstage to stage of the Palmetto Casino. The opening shot of Season 3 echoes that original — but with several twists.
The biggest one is the reveal that the figure we’ve been following from behind, wearing Deborah’s sequined jacket from the pilot episode, hair done up in the exact same way, is actually a lookalike. She’s one among many Deborah Vance-ettes, so to speak, at the launch of slot machines themed in the actual comedienne’s honor.
It’s a strong opening statement from the show’s co-creators Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs, one that tells us exactly the ride we’re going to be on in Season 3 of the Max series. “Hacks” isn’t just mining comedy bits.

2023 was the end of an era in the Best Comedy Supporting Actress Emmy category. For the first time in 10 years, “Saturday Night Live” was snubbed in the category in which it has been nominated a record 22 times and has won twice, both for Kate MicKinnon. Can it rebound in 2024?
Ever since the TV academy allowed “SNL” cast members to enter in the comedy acting categories in 2008, the sketch series has dominated supporting actress, with 2013 and 2023 being the only years it has failed to earn a nomination. McKinnons is “SNL’s” most nominated performer in the category — and overall — with nine bids, the second most in the category after Rhea Perlman and Loretta Swit, who each received 10.
After McKinnon’s final nomination for her final season in 2022, it was clear that “SNL” might struggle to continue its nomination streak. She was “SNL’s” only nominee in the category that year, down...

“Hacks” is, and has always been, a relationship comedy. The HBO Max series from Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky takes an exhaustively progressive Gen Z comedy writer and pairs her with a legendary stand-up comic whose worldview has become as stale as her jokes. The first season harvested humor from their prickly interactions, as both Ava (Hannah Einbinder) and Deborah (Jean Smart) felt each other out while finding a working rhythm. In Season 2, they took their show on the road, driving their fragile yet fruitful new connection toward a creative explosion or a close-quarters’ flare-out.
Ava and Deborah’s relationship is strictly platonic — Deborah’s running jokes about Ava’s “huge” hands negate any romantic assumptions, which the show itself has also acknowledged as a sneaky running joke of its own — but they’re not without romance. “Hacks” fits the comfortable mold of a romantic-comedy. “Hacks” is back — and better than ever! Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the Max comedy’s triumphant return and Emmy hopes.
After missing eligibility last year, “Hacks” dropped the first two episodes of its nine-episode third season on Thursday. While the show has also skipped a year in the narrative with a one-year time jump, it has not skipped a beat in quality. The jokes are still hilarious, the season-long storyline clicks, and Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are on fire. But will Emmy voters embrace the show again?

At the end of its second season, “Hacks” seemed to have written itself into a corner. On the heels of a hit special, veteran stand-up Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) fired Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), the young writer whose perspective helped push Deborah out of a yearslong creative rut. While harsh, the move was uncharacteristically selfless on Deborah’s part, cutting Ava and her valuable advice loose in an act of tough love. But even as forcing Ava to step out of her shadow showed Deborah’s growth, it also broke up the professional partnership that helped define the Max comedy and propel “Hacks” to acclaim.
This cliffhanger was further prolonged by Smart’s heart surgery and, of course, two concurrent Hollywood strikes. Yet, miraculously, Season 3 — which premieres May 2 — shows little signs of sweat. If any strain came with following through on such a tectonic shift, or getting back in gear...

You would be forgiven for mistaking Hannah Einbinder for Ava Daniels, the character she plays on HBO’s Hacks. The actor shares certain similarities with the comedy writer she’s portrayed for two seasons now, like their dry delivery, which leaves you less than 100 percent sure of whether they’re fucking with you until they crack a smirk and let you in on the joke. That’s not all, though.
“We’re both the same age, and we have the same face and body, of course,” Einbinder shares. “She looks exactly like me.

Now, the series is revisiting their dynamic in Season 3, and a lot has changed for the ladies. “We meet Ava and Deborah a year-ish later after some time has passed, and they’re both respectively in good places,” Einbinder shares. “I mean, as good as they can be without each other.” As fans have come to learn over the seasons, Deborah and Ava have become pretty reliant on one another when it comes to their creativity in comedy. Max As Einbinder puts it, “Ava’s working, she’s got a great job. She’s got this live-in girlfriend. She’s doing really well, and Deborah’s obviously basking in the success of her latest special,...

A great buddy comedy that bridges its generation gap with smart show-business satire, Hacks’ worth-waiting-for third season (delayed a year by the Hollywood strikes) finds new purpose in the undying ambition of its leading lady, legendary comic Deborah Vance. Though she cut loose her young comedy-writer protégée Ava (Hannah Einbinder) a year ago for their own professional good, Deborah reels Ava back into her glamorous orbit when an opportunity arises: a late-night talk show gig for which she was passed over 40 years ago. “I need to be sharper and funnier than I’ve ever been,” Deborah declares. And because they somehow can’t quit each other despite their temperamental, sartorial and demographic differences, Ava puts just about everything on hold—a relationship, a dream writing job at a Last Week Tonight–style political comedy show—to support her idol, who’s also her tormentor. Deborah is one demanding piece of work,...

While the idea of comedy on television has been warped by the Emmys, some shows can deliver the joke factories that once littered the TV landscape. Three-camera sitcoms may be out of vogue, but Hacks takes the best bits of those shows and applies them to a single-camera setup. Hacks shines as the best of both worlds with withering jokes and incredible performances. It’s among the most poignant and topical shows of the moment while laying track that will allow it to hold up in the decades to come. It does not hurt that Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are two of the funniest people on television.
