Maria Garcia is a director, costume designer and live artist working in film, theater and performance art. Her interdisciplinary investigations often center around death, 'liveness,' and migration. Most recently, Maria directed and costume designed Gal Musette's official music video for "Je vois le ciel," which will premiere in October 2022. In 2021, Maria's live art film project "Laocoön with Cabiria at 9," which she directed, wrote and designed premiered at REDCAT's NOW Festival in January 2021 and was a semi-finalist at the London International Web and Shorts Film Festival. The project was made in collaboration with performing artist Samantha Mohr, cinematographer Wes Cardino, and musician Grace Freeman. Garcia later directed and costume designed Gal Musette's award winning music video for "Julia." Maria is a member of the Costume Designers Guild where she serves on their diversity committee. She has costume designed for award winning Theater of the Oppressed company Cardboard Citizens, and made her film debut on "The Answer to Everything." Jessica Brunetto's short film Sisters, costume designed by Maria, was nominated for the Grand Jury Award at SXSW in 2021. This October "The Wilds" a new mixed reality performance costume designed by Maria premiered at the Lied Center for Performing Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska. Maria's directing, performance making and costume design is playful and ritualistic and touches on the absurd, often drawing on her background in devised theater and carnival arts. Other performance art works include, "Moon River '' (UK) and "Impart: Scenes of Abjection," (Los Angeles, CA). While in the UK Maria collaborated with award winning performance maker Mamoru Iriguchi on Into the Skirt, (Frankfurt) and One Man Show (London). Maria is currently based in Los Angeles, California.
