- She grew up in Piet Retief, in the South African province of Mpumalanga. She sang in church and at home.
- In January 2013, she made her New York Met debut as Countess Adele in Rossini's "Le Comte Ory".
- She is an operatic soprano. She fell in love with opera when she saw a British Airways TV ad that featured singing from Delibes's "Lakme". She began serious vocal training in Cape Town. She attended Teatro alla Scala's Academy of Lyric Opera, and made her professional debut as Micaela in "Carmen" in Riga, Latvia.
