MaryAnn’s quick take… The science is ludicrous, the story is almost entirely free of drama, and the finale descends into the hoariest, most ridiculous clichés of the genre. But the future smart-house porn is lovely. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a big science fiction fan

Oh, dear. Are we present at the birth of a new subgenre of science fiction films that might be dubbed Future House Porn? Because that’s what the feature debut of German filmmaker Lennart Ruff mostly looks like. The Titan is ostensibly the story of a Nato experiment in the year 2048 to retrofit some astronauts so they can live on the surface of Saturn’s moon Titan without any protective gear or even, as we later see,...

Lennart Ruff’s feature debut starts with an ingenious premise but takes a wrong turn by sacrificing scares for schmaltz
Not a bad idea, this. But where it could have delivered a mounting sense of dread, crowned with horror, the film seems concerned to hedge its bets by balancing the disturbing stuff with a feelgood drama about a family pulling together. It’s a sci-fi mystery thriller, distributed by Netflix and directed by feature first-timer Lennart Ruff, based on an original story idea by screenwriter Arash Amel.
We are some decades in the future; overpopulation and ecological calamity have made Earth uninhabitable, and our only chance for survival is to send some hardy pioneers to Titan, a moon of Saturn with an atmosphere in which homo sapiens could conceivably survive with the right genetic modifications. Sam Worthington plays Lt Rick Janssen, a tough military man who has volunteered for the top-secret medical programme,...

As well-intentioned and as decently acted as it is, Lennart Ruff’s low budget Sci-fi feature The Titan, which deals with profoundly noble ideas surrounding ethics in science, never quite manages to fully convince, and is ultimately let down by its inability to measure up to the film’s hugely ambitious premise.
The year is 2049 and planet earth is rapidly becoming uninhabitable after years of conflicts, famine and ecological disasters. As the future of mankind hangs in the balance, scientists and global governments must find a long-term solution to stop humanity from becoming extinct. When he is offered the chance to take part in a new scientific experiment led by controversial scientist Prof. Martin Collingwood (played brilliantly by Tom Willkinson), Air force pilot Rick Janssen (Sam Worthington) jumps at the opportunity to become a volunteer, first out of a sense of duty for the planet and to help protect the...

A clever but unformed hunk of speculative science-fiction, Lennart Ruff’s “The Titan” is essentially two parallel stories of survival that are being told at the same time. One is physical and intimate; the other is abstract and infinite. Strangely, they’re both far more interesting on their own than they are cut together, but each of them poses a handful of intriguing questions about our instinct for self-preservation, asking us to locate the point at which trauma might change the basic foundation of who (or what) we are. If only these questions were posed intriguingly, and not just churned through the machinations of genre shlock that doesn’t have the courage to be as smart as either of its stories require it to be.
The year is 2048, and the Earth isn’t going to be inhabitable for all that much longer. It’s the usual cocktail of apocalyptic trouble: nuclear war,...

Netflix has released a new trailer for Sam Worthington's upcoming sci-fi action thriller The Titan. I really like the concept of the film and it looks like it's going to make for an exciting movie.
The story is set in the near future and Earth's lifespan is coming to an end. For mankind to continue their existence they need to find a new home and that home is the Saturn moon of Titan. Worthington plays a man who signs up for a military program that will transformer him into an enhanced human called "Titans" who would be capable of living on that moon, which they hope to colonize. As you might expect things don't go as planned.
The movie also stars Taylor Schilling, Tom Wilkinson, Agyness Deyn, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Corey Johnson. Here's the synopsis:
A military family takes part in a ground-breaking experiment of genetic evolution and space exploration.

Featuring an all-star cast including Sam Worthington (Avatar, Terminator Salvation), Taylor Schilling (TV’s Orange is the New Black), Nathaie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones), Tom Wilkinson (Snowden) and Agyness Deyn (Clash of the Titans), The Titan is a tension-laced sci-fi action thriller that explores how conflict and adaptation can impact the human race in irretrievable ways…
When Earth’s resources start rapidly depleting, the human race is faced with the threat of swift and inevitable extinction. As the clock ticks down, and options become increasingly limited, space exploration emerges as mankind’s last hope. Hotshot Air Force pilot, Rick Janssen (Worthington), is chosen for a military experiment that will create a human being capable of surviving the harsh environments of Saturn’s moon, Titan. The experiment is successful, turning Rick into a super-human. But it also creates deadly side-effects which threaten the lives of Rick, his wife, Abigail (Schilling), his family,...

The film, which sees Worthington's family "relocated in order to take part in a ground-breaking experiment of mankind's genetic evolution into space," promises to take on big themes. It is based on an original story by Arash Amel (Grace of Monaco), and written by Max Hurwitz (AMC's Hell on Wheels).
