It's another jam-packed episode of the Empire Podcast this week, folks. Our guest cup certainly overfloweth, as Olly Richards sits down on Zoom with Memory stars Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard (21:17 - 37:40 approx.), Ian Freer talks Kurosawa, Columbo, German goalkeepers and Japanese toilets with the legendary director Wim Wenders (58:36 - 1:14:11 approx), and Dan Jolin gushes liberally all over City Of God in a 21st anniversary re-release chat with that film's director, Fernando Meirelles (1:30:51 - 1:48:04 approx).
Either side of those, Chris Hewitt hosts and is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for a fun episode in which they discuss their best ever days as film fans, their favourite queer films, the week's movie news including the announcement of Sam Mendes' wildly ambitious Beatles biopics, and review Memory, Wim Wenders' Perfect Days, Wicked Little Letters, and American Star. “Ahsoka” is quietly going down as one of the best pieces of “Star Wars” content we’ve had in years alongside “Andor.” Playing largely as a live-action fifth season of the cherished animated series “Rebels,” this Disney+’s hit takes place after “Return of the Jedi” when the Galactic Empire has fallen. However, all is not as well in the galaxy as it might seem as former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano begins to uncover a plot to re-introduce the Empire into a galaxy still finding its feet amidst a new order.
A large part of the show’s success should be attributed to Rosario Dawson, who plays Ahsoka as wise, calm, and assured in the face of so much uncertainty and chaos. Dawson brings to life this live-action version of Ahsoka with maturity, sophistication, and a deftness of touch that befits the character’s arc from bratty youth in the...

Cillian Murphy delivers a powerhouse performance in Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed biopic “Oppenheimer.” As J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, Murphy cuts a striking figure in his suit and hat with his piercing blue eyes staring out through IMAX screens and into the souls of cinema-goers.
The movie is Nolan’s first-ever biopic and explores how Oppenheimer went from a troubled, homesick student at Cambridge University to the leader of the Manhattan Project and the creator of the atomic bomb, which was later dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Murphy’s Oppenheimer is a supremely intelligent man with political leanings and a brain that could consume anyone in the room with him. But he’s also a troubled man, burdened by the weight of what he is trying to achieve and aware that his creation will change the world — and not necessarily for the better. It’s a...

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast features more Oscar nominees than… well, not the Oscars themselves, that would be ridiculous. But certainly more Oscar nominees than you could shake a golden stick at. First, Chris Hewitt has a chat with Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, directors of Best Animated Feature frontrunner, Pinocchio (not that one). Then, Alex Godfrey gets deep with Best Actress nominee, Michelle Williams, as she tells him about how she played Steven Spielberg's mum for Steven Spielberg in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans. And then Dan Jolin Zooms in for a chat with The Whale director Darren Aronofsky, and his star, possible Best Actor favourite Brendan Fraser.
Plus! Either side of those chats, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer to discuss Paul Mescal's chances of being the new Bond (and Chris comes up with a plan that should...

Despite a 22-year career in film and television, Hamish Linklater has only scooped up a single Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, which he earned for “The Big Short” (2015) as a member of its ensemble. Now, he could (and should) finally be on track to raking in his first solo bid, thanks to his acclaimed turn in Netflix’s miniseries “Midnight Mass.”
Created, directed and co-written by Mike Flanagan, the seven-part supernatural horror series takes place in a small, struggling town in which an enigmatic new priest, Linklater’s Father Paul Hill, awakens a new religious fervor upon his mysterious arrival. Since the show bowed on Netflix on Sept. 24, Linklater has vaulted into eighth place in our SAG Awards odds for limited series/TV movie actor. And for good reason. For his portrayal of Father Paul, the actor has received laudatory notices from critics, who commend him for his magnetic screen...

In 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road won our HeyUGuys poll by One Vote. That’s a scenario we never thought would play out again, but this year’s race was again tightly contested with two films battling it out for the number 1 spot; Dunkirk and Get Out.
It wasn’t until the last of the 187 entries was counted that we had a winner, and in the end it was Jordan Peele’s directorial debut – which 93 writers had in their top 10 lists – that won out over Christopher Nolan’s war epic. It’s official – Get Out is the best movie of 2017.
