In addition to the upcoming spinoff series “Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (it’s coming to Paramount+ this summer), the world of last year’s hugely entertaining Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will expand with an official sequel in 2026.
Paramount will release the untitled Mutant Mayhem sequel on October 9, 2026.
In last year’s movie, “After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”

“There’s that great old quote about Hollywood: ‘No one knows anything,’ ” says Kemp Powers. “Yet everyone acts like they know everything. I get particularly frustrated by some of these trends, because they selectively omit things that don’t validate their thesis,” admits Powers, one of the trio of directors behind Sony Pictures Animation sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which made $690.5 million at the worldwide box office. “There’s always a selective omission. Apparently no one wants to see any superhero movies, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did pretty damn well, too, with superheroes.”

Back in the 1990s, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" was all the rage. Thanks to the hit animated series and feature film franchise, the heroes in a half-shell became one of the biggest pop culture sensations of the decade, sparking various imitators like "Biker Mice from Mars" and "Street Sharks." But there was no beating Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo, especially when it came to the expansive action figure line from Playmates.
On top of the standard versions of all four turtles, as well as their adoptive father Splinter and primary villains Shredder, Krang, Rocksteady, and Bebop, Playmates released an eclectic array of villains along with a bunch of goofy variations on Leo, Donny, Raph, and Mikey. Michelangelo as a birthday clown? Done. Donatello as a cowboy from the Wild West? Yup. Raphael as an astronaut? You know it. Leonardo as a hockey player?...

Film and television adaptations of stories from other media consistently face uphill battles. Even the most faithful of adaptations can ruffle the feathers of the source material’s die-hard fans or lead audiences to question the point of the adaptation in the first place. Anime and manga have had an even harder time on this front as their live-action adaptations not only have to figure out how to ostensibly bring cartoons to life, but also take into consideration a multitude of sensitive cultural issues.
Audiences are used to writing off live-action anime adaptations after decades of being burnt by projects like Dragon Ball Evolution, Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, and this year’s Knights of the Zodiac, with live-action versions of Yu Yu Hakusho and My Hero Academia already in development. Actor Seth Rogen, a fervent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Tmnt) enthusiast since his childhood days, has now been granted an opportunity to shape the latest installment within the Tmnt universe.
For Seth Rogen, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles left an indelible impression at a tender age. He recounted: “The animated series came out in 1987, when I was five. The first movie came out in 1990, when I was eight. It was perfectly geared toward someone my age and I loved it. They were funny.”
“They were referential. I started taking karate probably because of the Turtles. I was just kind of obsessed.”
The saga of four sibling turtles – Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello – metamorphosed into witty mutants following their exposure to a mysterious neon ‘ooze.’
However, not every ardent admirer is presented with the opportunity to craft the next chapter in the saga of their cherished characters. Yet, when Brian Robbins,...

Seth Rogen doesn’t see the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes coming to an end any time soon. The animators of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem were taken care of by not being overworked. Director Jeff Rowe and producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg made sure the staff could work on the animated movie while continuing to maintain a good work-life balance.
“That was the thing that was really important to us on this film, and I learned it from Seth and Evan because in getting to know Seth, I’m like, ‘He has a really good work-life balance and everyone at Point Gray does,'” Rowe said in an interview with Insider. “And I asked him about that and he is like, ‘Well, we’re like when you’re doing live-action, sometimes you’re on a set for 40 days in a row and it is exhausting and tiring. And we want to make sure that our people have time away from that and that it doesn’t become their entire lives.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" follows the long tradition of reimagining the long-running franchise with every new adaptation, each new film and TV series changing character backstories, motivations, and relationships. In the case of "Mutant Mayhem," we get a brand new origin story for Master Splinter that's more meta and quite hilarious, a completely different Baxter Stockman, a redesign for the Turtles that highlights the teenage part of "Tmnt," and a radically different dynamic between the Turtles and classic villains like Bebop and Rocksteady.
The film also introduces new characters, such as the villainous Cynthia. She leads the Techno Cosmic Research Institute (Tcri) that hired Baxter Stockman to develop a mutagen that could create mutant creatures to be used as weapons. Played by Maya Rudolph, Cynthia is cool, funny, very weird, and threatening. Of course, arguably the most...

Even though "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" brings in a plethora of characters from the long history of comics, cartoons, and movies (including many of which who have never been seen on the big screen before), there's one major figure who has been intentionally held back: Shredder.
The news of Shredder not being in "Mutant Mayhem" isn't exactly a secret. Director Jeff Rowe was very open in the press about how Shredder was originally the villain in an early version of the movie, but he and his team ended up completely overhauling the story and saving him for the forthcoming sequel. Plus, all the marketing has been focused on introducing us to Ice Cube as Superfly, who leads his own team of mutants on a villainous scheme to dominate humanity by turning all the world's creatures into mutant beings like them. But the mid-credits scene for "Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem" sets up a sequel,...

When CG animation began to take hold following the release of Toy Story, there was a period where a lot of the movies looked quite similar. Little by little, the various animation studios added their own stylistic flourishes, but it wasn’t until the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse were it felt like there was a real mainstream departure from the previous style. Since the success of Spider-Verse, we’ve seen more animated movies embrace a unique style, including the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
While speaking with THR, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem director Jeff Rowe credited Spider-Verse with giving them more confidence in their style. “The first Spider-Verse really opened a lot of doors,” Rowe said. “It really made it okay for studios to take chances on a film looking unique and maybe having a little bit more sophistication and emotional maturity in its storytelling.

You can't have a truly great superhero without a worthy villain for them to square off with. That's even more true when you have four beloved heroes in the form of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Thankfully, the long history of comics, animated shows, and movies has cemented Shredder as the arch nemesis of the heroes in a half-shell.
However, director Jeff Rowe didn't want to jump into Shredder right away, equating the villain to the "Tmnt" version of Joker, who was arguably best utilized as a sequel adversary in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight." That's why "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" beings the turtles' life of crime-fighting with a villain known as Superfly, a fellow mutant who is leading his own squad of mutated animals like Bebop, Rocksteady, Mondo Gecko, Leatherhead, and many more.

Ice Cube loved playing villainous Superfly in the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ film as he felt there were “no rules”. The 54-year-old rapper and actor added the human-sized fly character in the newly-released animation – who says his dad created the crime-fighting turtles by dumping toxic waste down a sewer – is a street-wise “king of New York”-style character. He told Capital Xtra’s ‘Evenings with Omah Howard’ radio show: “Playing a villain is great – there are no rules playing a villain so it was just fun to be able to let loose. “Superfly is the king of New York – everybody knows his name in the streets. “Nothing happens in New York without going through Superfly or it’s gonna be a problem.” Ice – real name O'Shea Jackson Sr – stars alongside Seth Rogen, 41, in the turtles movie, who plays the heroes in half-shells’ mutant warthog nemesis Bebop. Cowabunga, dudes! With a new Turtle-tastic adventure in our midst with "Mutant Mayhem," it's time to walk down memory lane and see how the surprisingly extensive "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" cinematic canon stacks up. Read on, for our totally tubular and definitive ranking may surprise even the most ardent "Tmnt" fans.
Created in 1984 by comic book artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the Turtles have become a staple in pop culture and one of the most enduring media franchises across films, television, toys, and video games. They've inspired rap songs, Halloween costumes, and even thousands of dollars in collectors' auctions. It's hard not to be charmed by the hilarious banter from leader Leonardo, tech-wiz Donatello, cool-but-crude Raphael, and party dude Michelangelo, but how has such a confounding concept endured this long?
Well, no matter how malleable the characters are, the series always remains a story about family, brotherhood, and good triumphing over evil.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is digging deeper into the roster of mutant characters than any other big screen adaptation before it. Sure, the more recent live-action adaptations produced by Michael Bay gave us photorealistic CGI versions of Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang, but "Mutant Mayhem" digs into the stranger corners of the long history of "Tmnt" comics and animation to deliver a roster of wacky and weird characters for the Turtles to square off against.
Leading the mutant mayhem is a character known only as Superfly, a mutated, bipedal fly with an axe to grind against humanity. Voiced by Ice Cube, the character brings some Blaxploitation flair to the movie. However, it sounds like Superfly was originally going to be a much different character that took a more direct cue from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" history. And it all starts with Baxter Stockman.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is a bold new take on the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, one that builds on previous iterations while adding a fresh new look and focusing on things that previous iterations haven't always paid close attention to. For one, this is a movie that truly highlights the teenage aspect of the turtles, giving them each a unique personality that even reflects in their character design.
Granted, unique looks were a big part of "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," but "Mutant Mayhem" builds on it by also having actual teenagers voice the characters. In a relatively rare move for an animated film, "Mutant Mayhem" also had its young cast record together, which added a sense of camaraderie and youthfulness to the characters that wasn't there before. Since their debut in the mid-1980s, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have become one of the world’s most enduring pop culture creations. Over nearly 40 years, the turtles have appeared in independent comics, kids’ cartoons, a series of family-based movies, video games, and a misguided Michael Bay reimagining. Perhaps the best thing about the heroes in a half shells’ latest incarnation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, is that the animated film reinvents the characters once more while also maintaining affection for all previous turtle takes.
The new film from writers and producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg provides a slightly new vision of the characters’ origins, which, to be fair, have never been consistent. Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael were just baby tortoises when they were knocked into a sewer and came into contact with a glowing ooze that caused them to grow in size. One night, two struggling cartoonists had what turned out to be a billion-dollar idea. What if Frank Miller’s Daredevil had human-sized turtles in it? From that question came the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a quartet of brothers named after Renaissance artists who fought the Shredder and his Foot Clan (a spoof of perpetual Daredevil baddies the Hand). Who could have guessed that the self-published comic Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created would launch a phenomenon, one that survived its first boom in the late ‘80s and crash in the mid-1990s? It has since gone on to become an enduring pop culture franchise which is still going strong after several decades. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael have leaped out of the sewers and into every type of media, including video games and toys. Nonetheless, the characters are never more exciting than when they hit the big screen.

Plot: Follows the Turtle brothers as they work to earn the love of New York City while facing down an army of mutants.
Review: I count myself as a massive fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Whether it’s the old cartoon show, the live actions films of the 90’s, or even the original comic book. While I didn’t vibe with the Michael Bay-produced films, I’ve always loved the turtle action in them. So the fact that this one does the right thing and focuses on the titular characters versus April O’Neil, is already a massive win in my book. That’s what I want in a turtle movie and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has that in spades. And while there’s certainly a degree of origin story present, it mostly serves to reintroduce the public to this gang of green teens versus treading old ground.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been an unusual mainstay in popular culture for decades, so they might be seen as occupying an unusual subgenre unto themselves. Originally created in 1984, the Turtles were intended as a satire of the ultra-gritty superhero comics of the time, Frank Miller's "Daredevil" comics in particular. The absurd title and weird premise, however, caught on, and by 1990, the Turtles were starring in TV shows, video games, and a live-action feature film. In 2023, the Turtles are entering what might be their 20th unique continuity with the release of Jeff Rowe's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem." They have come a long way since their superhero-inflected origins.

The "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" movie arrives in theaters this week. Unlike other iterations of the heroes in a half-shell, the "Mutant Mayhem" part of the title actually delivers in a way that no other "Tmnt" movie has before.
Previous "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies have mostly focused on Shredder as the primary villain. But the sequel "Secret of the Ooze" introduced mutant baddies Tokka and Rahzar, and the more recent live-action/CGI hybrids produced by Michael Bay brought villains Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady into the fray as well. However, "Mutant Mayhem" features a cavalcade of mutant characters previously only seen in the "Tmnt" animated series and comics, and they're all voiced by some recognizable voices that you might have a hard time placing. That's why we've got a helpful "Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem" character guide, so you have the answer ready when your grandma asks, "Who was the voice of Mondo Gecko?...

It's been quite some time, but the heroes in a half-shell are coming back to the big screen this week. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is hitting theaters, with Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael bringing their brand of crime fighting out of the sewers and into the streets — in animated form! But as we recently learned, a sequel to the film is already in the works at Paramount in addition to a two-season TV show that will bridge the gap between installments. So the question for moviegoers: is there a credits scene that helps set up the future of the franchise?
Credits scenes have become expected fare for franchise films these days, in no small part thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sometimes they're hugely consequential, setting the stage for future installments. Other times, they just exist as a fun little bit of extra footage to help put a punctuation mark on the situation.

Ahead of the film’s August 2nd theatrical release, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have unveiled the companion soundtrack to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Listen to the album below via Apple Music or Spotify.
All of the films and television shows about our favorite reptilian crime fighters have a certain childlike quality, but with a team including Jeff Rowe (Gravity Falls), Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg, Mutant Mayhem breathes new comic life into the Ninja Turtles franchise. Reznor and Ross’ score follows suit, giving up their refined reputation for song titles like “Dipshits on a Roof,” “Murder the Shreks!,” “Puke Girl,” “Megamind, Gru-Type Sh*T,” and “Better Than Mark Ruffalo.”

Like any kid growing up in the 1980s, Seth Rogen wanted to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. “I grew up with them. And I grew up loving them,” Rogen tells Den of Geek. “I could not have absorbed it more thoroughly.”
Decades after yelling “Cowabunga!” in his family’s living room, Rogen is now a Hollywood mainstay involved in cult classics and mega-hits alike. You may know him best from R-rated comedies like Superbad, Pineapple Express, and This Is the End. But Rogen can be seen – and heard – in family movies too, like Kung Fu Panda and Disney’s The Lion King, and adult dramas like Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans.

The summer movie season isn't over yet, and we've got some heroes in a half-shell coming our way to try and make a splash late in the game. Paramount Pictures is gearing up to release "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" next week, giving the animated take on Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's beloved comic book creations a mid-week release to get a jump on the competition. That competition, in this case, is "Meg 2: The Trench," an R-rated shark flick seemingly going for a very different crowd. The question is, can this "Tmnt" reboot do for the turtles what "Into the Spider-Verse" did for Spider-Man?
Box Office Pro currently has director Jeff Rowe's "Mutant Mayhem" taking in anywhere between $27 and $36 million over the weekend, with a take of $37 to $49 million in the cards for the five-day, Wednesday to Sunday stretch. Meanwhile, "Meg 2" is eyeing a similar $26 to $35 million take.

When you think of the various villains of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you likely think of Shredder. Although the leader of the Foot Clan has been the arch-enemy of the Turtles for decades, Shredder won’t be featured in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, but that wasn’t always the case.
While speaking with io9, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem director Jeff Rowe revealed that early versions of the movie included Shredder as the main villain.
“The early version of the film [was] very different from what you’re seeing on screen,” Rowe said. “They were just in high school the entire movie. Shredder was the villain. And then part of the process of making this—and that’s one of the amazing things about animation—is because you don’t have to do a live-action shoot on a compressed schedule, you have a lot of time to...

“I like turtles.” Perhaps the most iconic phrase in modern history was uttered by ten-year-old Jonathan Ware at the 2007 Rose Festival in Portland, Oregon. With his zombie face paint freshly applied, Jonathan aka Zombie Kid was approached by Kgw local news correspondent Nancy Francis. After being asked to comment on his face paint, Jonathan’s response gave birth to one of the biggest viral videos. Sixteen years later, Paramount Pictures tracked Zombie Kid down to ask him his opinion on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. I think you already know what he’ll say.
When asked if this is the actual Zombie Kid, the official Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Instagram account responded, “Oh yeah, he’s back.” The early reactions to the film have been fairly positive and I’m digging the stylized animation. The studios seem pumped about the project as well as they have already...

Since the late ‘80s it seems like every generation has been getting their own version of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” through various TV series and spin-offs, both live-action and animated. So it’s no surprise that the beloved quartet of anthropomorphized mutant turtles who are pizza and martial arts-loving teenagers, receive a makeover on this side of the 2020s, too.
Enter “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” an eager-to-please outing across the sewers and streets of New York City, designed for an era that is still obsessed by origin stories taken from comedic superhero tales like “Deadpool” and recently influenced by the colorful and rule-breaking animation style of the “Spider-Verse” films.
The result is both as original and predictable as you’d expect. In that regard, “Mutant Mayhem” hardly feels like something you’ve never experienced before. But considering how over-exploited this particular IP is, co-directors Jeff Rowe (of...

When the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were first introduced in 1984, comic book creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird set out to skewer the superhero stories then dominating the space (sound familiar?), piling on the parody (teenage…mutant…ninja…turtles?) and (oopsie!) crafting their own unexpected hit heroes in the process. Over the course of nearly four decades, those wily heroes have cycled through countless iterations, eventually becoming a favorite for kids (of all ages) and spawning their very own entertainment complex. So, has this all been done before? Thankfully, no.
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” the latest entry into the half-shell canon, is another fresh, funny animated outing that breathes serious new life into a classic franchise, proving that even old IP has its legs (claws?). Directed by Jeff Rowe and scripted by Rowe, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit, “Mutant Mayhem” will inevitably draw comparisons to the “Spider-Verse” franchise.

Next week, the heroes in a half-shell return to the big screen, and they've never looked cooler. With the upcoming "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," director Jeff Rowe and producers Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg have opted for an animation style that combines the classic sketch style of the original comic books with modern visual sensibilities that feel like a teenager's high school drawings brought to life. A new trailer leans into what critics are calling a "visually stunning" adventure with Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo, and there are some incredibly cool shots on display that make this a must-see on the big screen.
But that's not all, because the "Tmnt" marketing department is also having the kind of fun that the turtles are known for while hyping up "Mutant Mayhem," which already has a sequel and animated series in development. They reached back into the depths of the internet...

Seth Rogen knew what kind of music he wanted to include on “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”.

Bustamante questioned whether there was a track from the ’90s that Rogen has on repeat all the time, to which he responded, “Oh so much. I listen to a lot of A Tribe Called Quest. I think, assuming the MPAA cleared it, there’s an Ol’ Dirty Bastard song in this movie, which is hilarious.

We’ve never been really far away from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Since they first arrived as comic book characters in the early 1980s, there has been a steady supply of comics, TV shows, games and films that celebrate the canon of Cowabunga. And Tmnt fandom, once experienced, can almost never be forgotten. Is it the masks? The pizza? The ooze that made them who they are? It’s nearly impossible to single one thing out.
When lifelong Turtle enthusiasts Seth Rogen, Jeff Rowe and Evan Goldberg started working on “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” which arrives in theaters this August, they knew they wanted to update the characters for a new generation while also telling a relevant story. Paramount’s animated reboot “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” doesn’t hit theaters until August, but the film made a splash on Monday at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival where it debuted to a rousing reception complete with a six-minute standing ovation. The crowd’s applause was so strong, in fact, that director Jeff Rowe was dragged back onstage to take it all in.
“Being in the room and feeling all the reactions and hearing all the laughter was amazing, but what really stood out to me was to see our movie received and appreciated in that way by a lot of people who really love and care about animation,” Rowe told TheWrap in a statement.
The cut screened at Annecy had just a few scenes of rough animation but was otherwise complete (including a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). Those in the audience included “The Mitchells vs. the Machines...

The mutants are unleashed in the official trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Coming from “permanent teenager” Seth Rogen, the animated adventure pits our favorite heroes in a half-shell against a new group of mutated animals, led by Ice Cube’s Superfly.
As the new preview reveals, the young Turtles are feeling like outcasts, made to stay hidden inside their sewer lair at the behest of their father, Master Splinter (the legendary Jackie Chan). When their new human friend, April O’Neil (Ayo Edebiri), tells them about the crimewave being carried out by Superfly and his crew, the Turtles see a chance to gain favor from the humans by saving the day.
But Superfly doesn’t want the Turtles to stop him — he wants them to join him. He’s leading a group of mutants on a mission to take over the world.

Can you kick it? The brand-spankin’ new trailer for Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movie’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has been released. This new continuity comes from “permanent teenager” Seth Rogen, who had announced that he intended to aim for the teenage aspect of our beloved heroes in a half-shell. It just so happens that they have ninja skills and can utilize them to foil some of the city’s criminal activities.
The official synopsis from Paramount and Nickelodeon reads,
After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate,...
