Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” concert film officially opened to $92.8 million in North America and $30.7 million internationally, bringing its first weekend tally to a massive $123.5 million globally.
These ticket sales are slightly below Sunday’s estimates of $95 million to $97 million domestically and $126 million to $130 million worldwide, but wildly impressive nonetheless. At the domestic box office, it’s the second-biggest October debut of all time, trailing only 2019’s “Joker” with $96 million.
With minimal promotion and unconventional distribution strategies, “The Eras Tour” easily landed the best start of all time for a concert film, as well as the sixth-biggest opening weekend of the year. It’s a remarkable start for a movie that wasn’t even added to the calendar until six weeks ago.
“This October, without Taylor Swift, would have been awful,” says Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “This is a huge bright spot.”

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is towering over the global box office with estimates of $126 million to $130 million in its first weekend of release. It’s a seismic start for any concert film, but this is particularly impressive because it was announced just six weeks ago and unspooled on the big screen with minimal marketing dollars.
“The Eras Tour” which is produced by Swift and distributed by AMC Theatres, collected a projected $31 million to $33 million from 94 international markets. It ranked as No. 1 in the United States with estimates of $95 million to $97 million, as well as the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, Germany and the Philippines.
Studios typically report a firmer number at this point, but AMC Theatres noted that “without clear comparisons, Sunday box office projections remain a range.” Already, “The Eras Tour” landed the biggest debut for a concert film in history, outpacing the previous record set by 2009’s “Michael...

Box office phenomenon ranks second in all-time October opening weekend pantheon behind ‘Joker’.
Update: Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour debuted at number one and became the highest grossing concert film at the North American box office in its opening weekend with a confirmed $92.8m bow.
While the opening fell below the $100m predicted in recent weeks and Sunday’s $95m-$97m estimated three-day range, that does not alter the fact that the release is a box office phenomenon and grossed enough to surpass the previous high water mark of $73m set by Justin Bieber: Never Say Never in 2011.

As the 2021 Sundance Film Festival kicks off, the survival of independent and specialty films in theaters has never been more uncertain. Even when theaters fully reopen after Covid-19 vaccines roll out and the pandemic ends, how can arthouse pics survive amidst competition from similar films with A-list stars bowing on streamers and majestic franchise fare?
“There’s going to be strain on the marketplace,” says Peter Kujawski, Focus Features chairman. “How many theaters are going to struggle to reopen? How many films will find a large enough audience to justify the initial theatrical release?”
Paul Serwitz, Landmark Theatres president and COO, puts it even more bluntly: “I really believe the theater industry is going to rebound completely, but smaller and midsized movies will take more of the brunt of the longer-term impact, because they don’t provide that spectacle that drives the masses to theaters.”
To find solutions to these challenges,...

AMC Entertainment, which recently reported a $905.8 million quarterly loss, is launching a Private Theatre Rentals program in hopes of reversing its declining revenues.
The program was unveiled Tuesday, four weeks after the initial beta launch of the product resulted in 110,000 inquiries around the country. The company said the number of contacts about a private rental in a four-week period was achieved without any significant marketing or press announcement, and is more than four times higher than the total amount of AMC’s private theatre rentals in all of 2019.
Customers can rent out a showing at any of AMC’s 600 screening rooms nationwide for as low as $99 for as many as 20 patrons. Recent releases such as “Tenet,” “The War With Grandpa” and “Freaky” are available starting at $149. Consistent with AMC’s policy, outside food and drink may not be brought into the screening.

The Salinger documentary made it’s world premiere today at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado and was met with positive responses by the critics in attendance. Filmmaker Ken Burns called the film “extraordinary” during the q&a following the screening.
For more than fifty years, J.D. Salinger, the elusive author of The Catcher in the Rye, has been the subject of a relentless stream of newspaper and magazine articles as well as several biographies. Yet all of these attempts have been hampered by lack of access and the recycling of inaccurate information. Thus, Salinger has largely remained an enigma to the public and media alike.

"When you're a kid and you read 'Catcher in the Rye,' you're just like oh my god -- somebody gets it," says Edward Norton in the trailer for "Salinger," a documentary from "Savages" writer and executive producer Shane Salerno. Norton and other adoring J.D. Salinger fans like actors John Cusack, Danny DeVito and Martin Sheen, writer Tom Wolfe and Pulitzer Prize-winners A. Scott Berg and Elizabeth Frank come together to discuss the coming of age story as well as the reclusive author. The documentary features 150 interviews with Salinger's friends, family and members of his inner circle who have never publicly spoken about him as well as never-before -seen photos, footage and personal letters. For years literary scholars and devotees have wondered why Salinger, at the height of his fame, suddenly ceased writing and went into hiding. The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for director Shane Salerno’s documentary Salinger. It took Salerno eight years to finish the film and he financed it entirely himself with a reported budget of more than $2 million. As the title suggests, the film centers on the mysterious life of Catcher in the Rye author J.D. Salinger, who suddenly stopped publishing in the mid 60′s and went into solitude. The trailer features interviews from people such as Edward Norton, John Cusack, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Danny DeVito, Martin Sheen, Robert Towne, and covers everything from Salinger’s childhood, work methods, marriages, love affairs, and deep hidden secrets. The Weinsteins paid top dollar when they acquired the film on the morning of the Academy Awards and have it set for release September 6th. Watch the trailer below.

The first trailer for the forthcoming documentary movie "Salinger," about the life of the famous recluse author, has appeared on Yahoo! Movies, and it looks intriguing. Backed by the Weinstein Company, the movie features John Cusack, Tom Wolfe and Martin Sheen among others talking about Catcher in the Rye and its creator.
It sells Salinger's life as one filled with pain and tragedy, and also seems to feature an actor dramatizing his writing process and breakdowns against a background of projections of his childhood.
Any new revelations are still being kept under wraps, while the bigger question that everyone has been asking since that iconic book first appeared in 1951: is there a missing followup manuscript somewhere in a vault?
The movie is listed on IMDb as appearing on September 6th, and being currently in post production. According to the cast list on that page, the author Elizabeth Frank...

I saw this trailer at the Weinstein presentation in Cannes last month and was impressed by what I saw as it looks like Salerno has not only managed to get a lot of people to discuss Salinger and not only in terms of his iconic "Catcher in the Rye", but well beyond into what the official synopsis describes as his "private world and the secrets he left behind after his death in 2010".
