Gold Gala is the type of weekend where you can share an intimate booth at L.A. culinary hotspot Yangban with a Pulitzer winner (journalist Jose Antonio Vargas) and a top festival exec (TIFF chief programming officer Anita Lee) on Friday night and then mimosas and a sound bath at the Four Seasons the next morning with an Olympic figure skater and a former Miss Universe (Madison Chock and R’Bonney Gabriel, respectively) – all as part of mere pre-gaming to the titular main event, which took place at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday night.
Ostensibly a cultural celebration and awards dinner from Asian Pacific power broker network Gold House, the third annual Gold Gala was simultaneously an haute couture showcase (fashion designer Prabal Gurung served as its creative director) and a family reunion, with 600 Api talent and leaders from across multiple industries turning out in their finest “heritage black tie,...

Lucy Liu was honored with the Legend award at the third annual Gold House Gold Gala on Saturday in Los Angeles.
Liu delivered a passionate speech after accepting the award from Regina King. “What I love about Regina is that she always makes choices that are for her,” Liu told the audience. “When I started over 30 years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices that I could make for myself.”
Liu — whose credits include “Ally McBeal,” “Elementary,” “Kill Bill Vol. 1,” “Charlie’s Angels” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence” — talked about having to make casting decisions “because of limitations.” She said, “I love that we are all here tonight because there is no ceiling, and I’ve never seen that for myself. It’s been a ride for “Beef” creator, writer and director Lee Sung Jin and the cast — the series dominated the Emmy Awards with five wins, and nabbed two SAG Awards for stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun.
While a second season has yet to be announced, Lee is making good use of his Notes app, inspired by his surroundings.
Lee spoke with Variety about his year and receiving Gold House’s Icon Award.
It’s been a year since “Beef” dropped on Netflix and became this phenomenon, what have the past 12 months been like for you?
The last 12 months have been quite a roller coaster. A lot of high highs — getting to go through the release and awards season with Steve and Ali and all our collaborators, it’s felt really special. They’re some of my best friends now, and to be able to experience that together was really wonderful.

A company at the heart of the creator economy has made some changes to its executive team. Spotter, which offers creator counseling and disburses capital through catalog licensing and other monetization tools, has named Sam Rogoway as its Chief Operating Officer while installing previous COO Nic Paul as its President.
Rogoway is joining Spotter less than a year after he left Linktree, where he held the title of Chief Product Officer. Rogoway’s experience in the creator economy predates the use of that term; a decade ago, he teamed up with former YouTube exec Bing Chen to launch Victorious, a startup that helped influencers build and monetize their own apps. Mindfulness app Headspace acquired Victorious in 2019.
The industry knowledge Rogoway has accumulated will serve him well in his new role at Spotter. The company that pioneered the catalog licensing model has expanded its services by positioning itself as a stable of creator economy experts.

‘Here Lies Love’ Teams With Gold House, The Asian American Foundation for Broadway Ticket Initiative
Broadway’s Here Lies Love, the disco-pop musical from David Byrne and Fatboy Slim about the infamous former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos, is launching a new ticket initiative tied to Filipino American Heritage Month.
In an effort to increase access to the historic musical, which features Broadway’s first all-Filipino cast, Here Lies Love‘s producers have partnered with Gold House and The Asian American Foundation (Taaf) on “Democracy in Action.” The initiative aims to raise $1 million in tax-deductible donations, which will go to subsidizing 33 percent of tickets to the show in October, a cultural heritage month for Filipino Americans.
“We are extremely proud of this initiative and grateful to our colleagues at Gold House and Taaf for recognizing the unique opportunity Here Lies Love creates to broaden the demographics of Broadway audiences,” said the show’s producers Jose Antonio Vargas, Patrick Catullo, Diana Dimenna, Clint Ramos,...

Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan was honored with the Gold House Leading Man award at the second annual Gold House Gold Gala on Saturday in Los Angeles.
“When I think of a leading man, I think of someone who is six feet tall with big muscles, good-looking, and a ladies’ man,” the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star said before cracking, “That practically screams me, right?”
While the gala honored the most impactful Asians on the company’s A100 list, which recognizes the 100 Aapi individuals who impacted American culture and society in the last year, the night remained focused on celebrating Asian visibility and achievements. There was little talk of the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike currently impacting the industry.
As Quan’s “Everything Everywhere All At Once” co-star Stephanie Hsu celebrated her upcoming film “Joy Ride,” she shouted “WGA Strong” when thanking director Adele Lim, writer Teresa Hsiao and Cherry Chevapravatdumrong.

Since the very first Academy Awards in 1929, only 23 performances by Asian actors have been nominated for an Oscar.
Four of those 23 nominations came this year: Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu for “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and Hong Chau for “The Whale.”

“Our community leads in nearly every major Oscar category while our own Gold House co-founder [Janet Yang] is President of The Academy,” Chen said in his speech. “We got here because we did this together — and we can’t wait to take it further.”
Indeed, Sunday’s Oscars may be a historic night. Michelle Yeoh is only the second Asian actress in history to be nominated for Lead Actress. There has only been one Asian Best Actor winner,...

When asked for one word to describe Asian and Pacific Islander media in 2022, Blade of the 47 Ronin actor Yoshi Sudarso said, “diverse.”
The crowd present at Thursday night’s Asian Pacific Islander Excellence Celebration certainly matched Sudarso’s words. Chinese American reality television stars rubbed elbows with Polynesian American musicians and Southeast Asian American silver screen actors at Casita Hollywood, where The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix and Gold House teamed up for a celebration of the Api community’s 2022 successes.
“If you think about the way Hollywood looked at our culture 20 years ago, we were deemed culturally irrelevant,” said Hasan Minhaj. “Now, we’re making some of the most relevant, poignant, cutting-edge work.”
From Minhaj’s perspective, Everything Everywhere All At Once (from A24) and Mo are just two of those impactful works. Love Is Blind star Deepti Vemapti and Boo, Bitch actress Aparna Brielle...

There is a Planned Parenthood in South L.A. five minutes from USC, where Storm Reid goes to college.
“I have friends who have been in situations where they’ve had to go to Planned Parenthood,” the Euphoria star said in a conversation with Ava DuVernay and Nina Shaw on Thursday afternoon in Ojai. “That right could possibly be taken away from the people I care about and people who don’t have the resources to be able to be a normal young human and make a mistake or whatever the case may be.
“The [possibility] they don’t have the ability to have a choice of what they do to their body is devastating,” Reid continued, beginning to cry onstage. “I hate calling myself an activist because I’m not on the ground doing the work activists do, but I try through my...

Janet Yang, the veteran Hollywood producer who has been described as “the godmother of Asian-Americans in the industry” — and who is rumored to be a candidate to succeed David Rubin as the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ board of governors, on which she has served as a governor-at-large for the last three years and a vice president for the past year, in August — was feted on Tuesday evening at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, where a pillar was dedicated and a dinner was held in her honor.
If Yang — the daughter of Chinese immigrants who made her name connecting the Chinese and Hollywood film industries before serving as a producer on films like The Joy Luck Club and The People vs. Larry Flynt — wasn’t planning on seeking the presidency of the Academy’s board prior to Tuesday’s gathering,...
