After the Biden administration issued a final rule last week that would require airlines to automatically issue refunds to passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled, four lawmakers bankrolled by the airline industry introduced must-pass legislation that could undermine the effort.
As The Lever reported, the lawmakers — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), and Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) — introduced a new Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization deal that would require passengers to send a “written or electronic request” in order to receive a full...

A reporter at the Capitol approached Texas Sen. Ten Cruz (R). Cruz appeared to be in an upbeat mood when the conversation began. However, Cruz turned defensive when questioned about his podcast, Verdict, and the questionable payments surrounding it.
“I understand you have a mission to write an attack piece,” Cruz told the reporter.
The thrice-weekly Verdict podcast hosted by Cruz has raised legal and ethical questions. In March, the Houston Chronicle reported that iHeartMedia gave “Truth and Courage,” a super Pac supporting Cruz’s reelection, more than $630,000. iHeartMedia hosts Cruz’s podcast.
Campaign laws forbid candidates from corresponding with super PACs that support them. While it is not yet confirmed that Cruz has directly supported Truth and Courage, the connection between his podcast and iHeartMedia could raise legal trouble for the senator.
The Campaign Legal Center and End Citizens United have already filed a complaint against Cruz with the Federal Election Commission.

Donald Trump’s criminal hush money trial kicked off this week with witness testimony from media honcho David Pecker, who said that the former president was well aware of the catch-and-kill scheme and even thanked Pecker for his help in hiding two potentially “damaging” stories. The former American Media Inc. Chairman and CEO set the stage for the rest of the trial, giving a chronological overview of how he was brought into a meeting with Trump and his former fixer Michael Cohen at Trump Tower in August 2015, two months after...

Former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial reached the end of its second week as the prosecution’s first witness, former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, returned to the stand on Friday.
Defense attorneys sought to challenge Pecker’s narrative of Trump’s alleged involvement in suppressing “embarrassing” stories in the 2016 campaign.
Throughout the week, Pecker testified that Trump and his then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, had requested him to serve as their “eyes and ears” and uncover whatever salacious stories could harm Trump’s candidacy. Pecker also said that he was asked to publish negative stories about Trump’s opponents. In cross-examination, Trump’s attorney, Emil Bove, aimed to undermine Pecker’s credibility and highlighted instances in which he had mixed up dates and suggested that the passage of time could affect his memory.
Pecker admitted that he had killed over 30 stories about women who claimed Arnold Schwarzenegger had harassed...

It’s been Donald Trump’s terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week.
The past and potentially future leader of the free world spent most of it in a dingy Manhattan courtroom, no longer the master of his domain. It’s a place where he dutifully sits down when the judge tells him to sit, where he’s unable to say whatever he wants, where he’s not allowed to use his phone. And worst of all, where there’s no red button for him to push when he wants a Diet Coke. And according to him, it was bitterly cold — “freezing,” in fact, sounding like your elderly uncle at Thanksgiving. Forget a legal defense; someone needs to give him a sweater.
The criminal hearing in which he’s facing 34 felony counts is not the trial we deserve. That would be either the Georgia election interference case, the federal classified...

David Pecker, a former publisher for the National Enquirer, confessed that an article which claimed a connection between Sen. Ted Cruz‘s (R-Texas) father, Rafael Cruz, and Lee Harvey Oswald was completely fabricated.
The story, published in 2016, claimed that a previously unidentified man photographed with Oswald handing out leaflets to support the former Cuban president Fidel Castro in New Orleans was actually Rafael.
The report noted that “experts” who reviewed photos of the evangelical preacher from this period found that he appeared to look similar to the assassin’s companion.
Former President Donald Trump made comments about this article by saying that Sen. Cruz’s father was in the company of Oswald just months before when he shot John F. Kennedy in 1963.
Even though Rafael confessed that he once backed Castro, he says he had been “duped” and did not know he was a communist.

Jurors in Donald Trump’s hush money trial heard testimony on Tuesday from the architect of a notorious “catch-and-kill” scheme that buried damaging stories about the former president in the run-up to the 2016 election: former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker.

The Senate rejected impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, quickly dispatching the case after trial proceedings that lasted just a few hours.
The move was not unexpected, with Senators voting along party lines. Mayorkas was impeached in the House more than two months ago by just one vote, as Republicans sought to punish him over the way that he handled the southern border.
Cable news networks dipped in and out of the proceedings through the afternoon.
Senate Democrats were successful in their move to dismiss the case, voting that the two impeachment charges were unconstitutional because they did not rise to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors. Mayorkas was charged with “willfully” refusing to comply with immigration laws and with making false statements to Congress.

Brian Teta, the executive producer of The View, has signed a new contract for the show that will keep him at the often buzzy daytime talker for the next four years.
The show has been up 3% in total viewers season to date, and has continued to top daytime talk shows and news programs in viewership and households. There are signs of an election-year influence in the uptick: The day after the Iowa caucuses, when ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jon Karl guested, the show’s 2.85 million viewers was its most watched telecast in nearly two years.

There's no arguing that Shakira is a feminist icon. Entering the year on the heels of a very public split from her long-term partner and the father of her two sons, Gerard Piqué, she managed to take a painful experience and turn it into a shared triumph. Her latest studio album, "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran," is a testament to independence and the strength that comes with it. It's a sentiment that many, especially women, will be able to relate to. In her recent Allure cover interview published on April 1, Shakira delves into what that strength looks like and what it means to be a woman healing today. But one thing that stood out from the interview was the singer's controversial take on another feminist pop culture pillar: the "Barbie" movie.
Shakira shares her sons "absolutely hated" the film because they "felt it was emasculating." "I like pop culture when...

Update: 1:33 Pm: The jury has reached a verdict in E. Jean Carroll’s multi-million defamation trial against Donald Trump after just a few hours of deliberations.
The decision is expected to be read out in the next few minutes. Trump will not be there when the verdict is announced, as he left the Manhattan court about half an hour ago for the airport.
Carroll’s lawyers are looking for at least $24 million in compensatory damages, plus more in punitive damages. Trump has already been found liable last year of sexual abusing and defaming Carroll. Back in May, that jury awarded the former Elle columnist $5 million. Ever since the allegations of the mid-1990s attack came to light in 2019, the much-accused Trump has continued to smear Carroll and declare his innocence in and out of the White House. Carroll says his defaming remarks put her in danger and ruined her reputation.

Haley has never served in Congress and was not in government at the time of the riot.

An unknown man in his underwear walked through a live TV interview on right-wing network Newsmax, which featured the network’s anchor Rob Schmitt and conservative political commentator, Dick Morris.
On January 15, Schmitt was reporting on the likely outcome of the 2024 Iowa Republican caucus with Morris.
During this interview, the political commentator was telling Schmitt what a win at this caucus could mean for GOP candidates like Nikki Haley and Donald Trump.
“Well, I think Trump is going to score a huge victory,” he stated. “I think the media is going to try to downplay it because, as you correctly said, they’re basically supporting Nikki Haley.”
When Morris was nearly halfway done with this statement, the large unknown man wearing nothing but a white tank top and black boxer shorts walked into the room in which Morris was doing his live shot.
The interview and Morris continued on without commenting on the odd sight.

On Monday, Donald Trump claimed that he had won two Iowa caucuses despite the fact that he lost to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in 2016.
While leaving the Hotel Fort Des Moines ahead of this year’s caucus, the former president shared his confidence with reporters.
“We’re going to have a great night, and it’s a fantastic place,” Trump said. “We’ve won it twice, as you know. Two elections. I think we’re going to have a tremendous night tonight. The people are fantastic, and I’ve never seen spirit like they have, countrywide. But in Iowa, I’ve never seen spirit like that.”
Trump was the 2020 Iowa caucus against former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, garnering 97% of the vote.
In 2016, however, Cruz took the lead with 27.6% of the vote, edging out Trump’s 24.3%. The former president congratulated the senator before taking to social media and circulating fraud allegations.

Former President Donald Trump has promoted a false birther conspiracy against his opponent in the Republican presidential primary, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, questioning if she is an American citizen eligible for the presidency.
On January 8, Trump went to Truth Social to post a screenshot of a post from The Gateway Pundit, a right-wing website, discussing the citizenship status of both Haley and her parents.
“In @NikkiHaley’s situation, reports indicate that her parents were not U.S. citizens at the time of her birth in 1972,” the publication wrote in the caption. “Based on the Constitution as interpreted by @PaulIngrassia, this disqualifies Haley from presidential or vice-presidential candidacy under the 12th Amendment.”
Haley was born in Bamberg, South Carolina.
In spite of the claim made by this publication, experts have noted that the 14th Amendment states that people who are born or naturalized in the U.S. are citizens.

Networks are heavily promoting their night of Iowa caucus coverage, with reporters fanned out across the state and, throughout the day on Monday, anchors doing their best to stir up excitement in the waiting game before voting actually begins.
But as large as the investment is for broadcast and cable networks, the coverage is facing heavy competition on the night of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Fox has the Emmys, and ABC has what is likely to draw the biggest audience, the NFL playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Broadcast networks are sticking to their regular schedules with the possibility of news updates, leaving the ongoing coverage to their streaming and cable channels.

The Iowa caucus on Monday will be like no other —- and that was apparent from the start, well before subzero weather raised doubts about turnout, stymied campaigns in the final sprint and left an army of reporters and consultants seeking the warm refuge of Des Moines hotel lobbies.
The expectation is that Donald Trump will win —- but like past caucuses, that will only tell part of the story. In the race for second place, rival Nikki Haley is looking for momentum for a potential victory next week in New Hampshire, and Ron DeSantis wants to defy pundits who have written him off.
The release of the final poll before the caucuses on Saturday night —- one sponsored by the Des Moines Register, NBC News and Mediacom —- helped set expectations for the results, with much coverage framed on whether candidates exceed or under perform. The poll showed Trump...

Presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) told a reporter that he predicts if Donald Trump loses the Iowa caucuses or New Hampshire primary, he will “say it’s stolen no matter what.”
A reporter asked DeSantis, “Governor, do you expect the former president to accept the results, say, in Iowa or New Hampshire, given the unfounded claims about 2020?”
DeSantis replied, “If Trump loses, he will say it’s stolen no matter what, absolutely. He will try to delegitimize the results… He did that against Ted Cruz in 2016, and he will do that. I mean, even when like The Apprentice didn’t get an Emmy, he said it did. So I think I don’t think there’s been a single time he’s ever been in competition for something where he didn’t get it, where he’s accepted it. I don’t think he will do that.”

One need only glance at the leading men and women of any given era to see Hollywood's perennial beauty standards. Most actors will know the pressure of keeping fit and aesthetic, especially after the mainstreaming of gym and fitness culture in the late 20th century. Take Superman, for example. Christopher Reeve was a tall and athletic man, but compared to Henry Cavill's cast iron physique, his rangy costume looks slightly pedestrian. It's not all about "looking good," of course. Some actors have drastically changed their bodies to better portray their characters, such as Robert De Niro in "Raging Bull," Christian Bale in "The Machinist," Matthew McConaughey in "Dallas Buyers Club," and Tom Hanks in "Cast Away."
Still, "looking good" is a prerequisite for many actors, and they often must obey the wishes of producers, directors, and casting managers, who are known to ask for weight loss, dental work, and even plastic surgery.

When Kate Cox was forced to flee Texas after state authorities denied her pleas to terminate a potentially deadly pregnancy, it laid bare the true cost of state control over women’s reproductive health. It’s also made plain that Republicans — despite their claims to hold the moral high ground on abortion — cannot defend the policies they champion when they present real-world consequences.

Based on the available data from Amazon, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene‘s (R-Georgia) memoir release has not achieved its desired success.
Approximately one week ago, Greene published her autobiography Mtg through Donald Trump Jr.‘s publishing company. The book delves into Greene’s reflections as one of the most controversial members of Congress.
On Tuesday, editor-in-chief of self-styled “pro-democracy news network” MeidasTouch Ron Fliipkowski noticed the book’s low rating in the Amazon sellers list.
Mtg currently holds the position of 9,805 on Amazon’s Best Seller list.
Sen. Ted Cruz‘s (R-Texas) Audible audiobook, Unwoke: How to Defeat Cultural Marxism in America, is currently ranked at number six in Amazon’s list of best-selling political commentary books. At the same time, Mtg is at number 26.

The series follows Carolla’s junior high woodshop teacher popularized on Kroq radio and brought to life in puppet form on Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers.
In this animated update, according to producers, “Mr. Birchum attempts to navigate a world he doesn’t understand or approve of. In a new book it is revealed that during the heated Republican primary of 2016, former president Donald Trump used derogatory language to refer to evangelical supporters of his rival Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
The book, written by Tim Alberta, is titled The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism, reported that Trump had called evangelicals “so-called Christians” and “pieces of s——.”
The incident occurred after a misstep by Trump when he misquoted a Bible verse at an event at Liberty University, which led to much laughter and ridicule. Trump speculated that there was a conspiracy among powerful evangelicals to prevent him from the GOP nomination.
The book highlights that Trump continued to use colorful language to describe the evangelical community in private conversations over the years. Despite his controversial remarks and a lengthy rap sheet, which includes two impeachments and multiple criminal charges, Trump...

Things once again got physical in Congress this week, so “The Daily Show” decided to report straight from the middle of the action on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for correspondent Desi Lydic, that meant some torn clothes and a clear black eye, because you “can’t report on congressional fight club without joining it.”
Before Lydic entered the scene though, guest host Leslie Jones shamed the near-brawls, and specifically called out Kevin McCarthy, who purportedly elbowed a Republican congressman who voted him out in the kidneys.

Leslie Jones is disappointed by the near fight that occurred in the Senate on Tuesday, but not because anything Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin did. No — the comedian’s displeasure has to do with Bernie Sanders breaking things up.

Bill Maher on Actors Strike Ending, Screening of Hamas Attack Footage, Abortion Rights on the Ballot
Bill Maher covered a range of news from this week in his Real Time opening monologue, including the SAG-AFTRA strike ending, the screening of uncensored Hamas attack footage and the overwhelming vote for abortion protections on Ohio’s election ballot.
To kick off Friday’s show, the host told the audience that they’re cheering especially loud tonight “because we’re in Hollywood and the actors strike is finally over.”
He went on to jokingly inform the “new younger people watching” that the “actors are the people in the movies, pointing at the CGI.”
The 118-day actors strike officially ended after SAG-AFTRA announced earlier this week that the union reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract with studios and streamers.

Oil and water. Oscar and Felix. Entering tonight’s Real Time, you’d expect Sen. Ted Cruz and Bill Maher to fit into that “don’t mix” category.
You’d be wrong, for the most part. Although they sparred at times, the two political opposites found that they were often on the same page.
Cruz is out supporting his new book, Unwoke: How to Defeat Cultural Marxism in America, and surprisingly admitted his admiration for the “old-school liberal” Maher, who Cruz said was “funny as hell” and “believes in free speech.”
“I actually appreciate what you do,” Cruz said, adding he has retweeted some of Maher’s monologues.
Maher seemed taken aback. “I feel really bad about the jokes I did about you,” he said. He acknowledged he is often accused of slowly getting more conservative, basically because he refuses to “bend the knee” to the more “crazy train” ideas of the left.
